AFAIK, it must not pay out _anything_ of value - not Lindens, nor US$, nor free items. Actually, you can give out free items, as long as they are not exchangeable for anything of value, IE, like tokens exchangeable for Linden dollars or real currency. |

The problems with gambling in SL are: * Gambling for money on the internet is illegal in the U.S. ... Incorrect, but it's a common misconception. It's illegal in 11 states (last I checked - that number may be different now) but the only thing illegal on a national level is sports wagering, and even that's questionable. The UIGEA makes it illegal for banks to transfer money to gambling sites. As a practical matter, it's still very easy to do that, but it's not as easy as whipping out your credit card. Once you have money on a site, there is no federal law preventing you from gambling with it. The bottom line is that it's illegal in SL. That's all anyone needs to even care about. LL has said that it won't be tolerated. End of story. Trying to find a loophole or some secret back door method to sneak gambling by is stupid. _____________________

AFAIK, it must not pay out _anything_ of value - not Lindens, nor US$, nor free items. Technically you'd be within the rules giving out no transfer items, but a big old casino trying this on isn't going to get far. |

I think some kind of in-world competitive game would be the best way to bring gambling back into SL. It would be something that requires just two players like boxing or wrestling or tennis. The organizer would maybe charge a flat entrance fee and then organize the betting process depending on the odds. They would have to build up a certain amount of trust and show that they do pay out according to the odds. I'm not sure if such an competition could be run 24-7 but you could just create events. I guess it would require quite a lot of effort and a good amount of scripting and building but if there's money to be made I think it would be worth it. That's my 2 cents. Feel free to run with it.

Still one day this will be irrelevant, the US will open up properly or will use GPS technology to verify which state someone is in. And gambling will STILL be illegal in SL unless they decide to get a Casino licence and that ain't ever gonna happen! ***edit*** smiles at Yumi too. Yay. Sense!!! |

It's especially stupid when you advertise an attempted work-around on the public forums. I think it's too bad there can't be a legal (with respect to Linden Lab and real world law) way to have gambling in SL that addresses the other issues too. --Hugsy _____________________

Chaos, don't listen to the rest of them. They have no vision. I have a friend who will do the scripting if you will make the fruit machine. I'm sure you can make a nice one with only about 150 prims.

/me smiles at Trout However, there's MASSIVE problems if you happen to take US wagers ... fact!! /me melts a little inside. Absolutely true! Also, running a site which facilitates the transfer of funds to and from gambling sites, then taking connecting flights through a US airport is not the hottest idea...not naming names or anything...just sayin' There's a big difference between making wagers as an individual over the internet and running a gaming site that accepts wagers. You probably don't want to be in the business of accepting wagers from US citizens if you are within the reach of US law enforcement. I hear Costa Rica is nice this time of year. _____________________

In reference to the lottery (which I call a poor man's tax)... heh ... in our house we call it the moron tax I don't understand why it is so hard for people to deal with the fact that you can not gamble anymore, what is the big deal?(Actual Question) because some people are a bit poorly. I am a nicotine addict so am poorly in a different way. Now I can't smoke anywhere and lots of people say to me, what's the big deal? The big deal is addiction ... nasty thing, however it gets you. The only "gambling" I ever do is once a year at the seaside with my family, we all buy a £1 bag of 2p's and hit the penny falls (well, tuppenny falls these days - inflation .... huh!) The rules are: You are only allowed to play the tuppenny falls - no slots, or machines with higher stakes No buying any more bags of 2p's All winnings must be fed straight back into the machines You must stay until you have lost everything First one out is the "winner" and gets to buy the ice-creams ah well, it amuses us ... I hate fruit machines in pubs, because of the flashing lights and stupid noises (I'd quite happily play shove-ha'penny if I knew the rules), and I am glad gambling has gone in SL. |

You are definitely slutty in the best possible definitions of the word. Dirty, hot, and a little scary, but in a good way. I'd like do awful things to you, but I'm pretty sure you'd snap me in two like a twig and leave me cross-eyed, dizzy and confused. I'm giving you a 9.8, tied for the top rating ever given. Almost off-the charts slutty. Shame on you and congratulations. -- Trout
