I for one am glad I never saw the gambling in SL. Not only for the negative impact it had on the geography and user experience, but also because I've been to a few RL casinos, and seeing welfare moms gambling away what little they have sickened me to no end. Organized gambling is a social sickness, which I find tough to balance with the ideals of liberty. So I'm glad LL took the decision away. But that's just me. :)

Ericka Nemeth sides into the thread - beer in one hand, pie in the other.

Did I make it before the lock?

Seriously dude... give it up! Gambling is dead and buried! Find another legal money making plan and run with it...

How to Gamble in SL ..

1) Get a SIM
2) get renters to help you cover tier.
3) Do a dark future RP build taking 2-4 times as many prims as you need.
4) Tell the renters they wont get the prims they paid for.
5) whine about sims only getting 15000 prims on the forums.
6) Use nasty language towards anyone giving advice you dont want to hear.

In RL we had someone in our town start a gaming parlor with the type of machines, one that supposedly involved skill. Didn't work, Federal gov said still gambling. They were the exact machines you were talking about. So if it doesn't work in RL then it won't work in SL.

I don't understand why it is so hard for people to deal with the fact that you can not gamble anymore, what is the big deal?(Actual Question)

It's not hard for almost everyone but Chaos. Sl was a horrible, horible platform for gambling. There are really good, reputable places on the internet to gamble if that is how someone chooses to spend their entertainment budget - it is their choice, after all. But SL was terrible. People seem to have gotten over the gambling ban quite nicely, but somehow Chaos is stuck in a loop. Maybe his gambling script tried to divide by zero or something.

With a long script of complicated mathmatics to make sure that it is NOT random it is not then illegal as it is a game of skill, and not chance.

I think you're confusing what most people think of as a "random number" and what a computer-generated "random number" really is.

When you ask a computer for a random number, it does a long set of semi-complicated math and returns the result. If you move that math from the lower level (the LSL llFrand function) up to your script, it's still going to be "random" as far as LL is concerned. Anything that's complicated enough that the end-user can't predict the answer will be considered "random."

As others have said: give it up.

Seein as gambling is illeagl now, SL shoud run under it`s own rules.

Last night everytime I TP`d it was a gamble that I`d get anywhere, and 20-1 odds it would be where I meant to go.

(lame attempt at abstract humour)

anyway

Here`s an Idea ..Write up the script for the gambling work-around, and give it to the Lindens for review.
They make the rules, so it`s their call

FFS

No Linden do NOT make up the "rules" on this one. Complex international laws do!!!

Why is this so hard to grasp? Hey it would be great if not, we could have legalised armed robbery in SL too ... SHEESH ...

Thanks--I was about to post something like this. AFAIK, the only true random numbers are generated by quantum events, like radioactive decay. And that's assuming we're allowing God to "play dice with the universe." But I suppose He can get around the gambling ban, even if Chaos can't. ;)

So lets outlaw Teleports?

That way SL cn kinda be like Yahoo instant Messenger, since you wont be able to visit anyone.

God has too much fun rolling the dice on my life. He doesn't need SL.

You're forgetting one-thing; the vast majority of people who play fruit-machines in the UK is rat-arsed drunk and puts in probably around £5 a time, and is happy when they get back £10 after eight or nine attempts =P

My statistics are just to illustrate, but I have friends who'll come over to say, "Yas! A wun a fiver!" (Translation; "Oh jolly good, I seem to have received five pounds sterling!";), when asked how much they won in the last month they will reply "Uhm...about a tenner?" (Ten pounds) and upon being asked how much they SPENT on the machines, will wander off for another pint as the realisation they put £20-30 into these things hits them.

UK fruit machines aren't considered skill games, and are considered gambling. It's just that UK pubs have a limited license to allow gambling games to run in them. In fact, you can often see the license sign around the bar area - it's a reminder of bygone days, that the bar still has to mention it has a license to allow the play of "dominoes, darts, cribbage and shove ha'penny for small stakes.." :)

It's also why most of the fruit machines "weasel out" of the "small stakes" rule by using repeat wins. Essentially, if you win a jackpot, you'll often win 20 pounds or so, plus a flashing notice saying "repeat chance!" which means you have a greatly increased chance of winning another 20 on your next game. But as far as the law's concerned, that's a second game for small stakes..

Also, all UK fruit machines now have signs saying "The outcome of any feature or gamble is not necessarily that shown by the odds displayed. This machine may at times offer players a choice where the player has no chance of success.", just to make it absolutely clear they are not games of skill at all.

No. They are a sure thing for the owner, and a sure loser for the players.

The problems with gambling in SL are:

* Gambling for money on the internet is illegal in the U.S.

* SL casinos have no regulatory oversight. Blackjack games, for instance, by nature of the game, favors the house (and everyone knows this). SL blackjack is likely to be rigged to favor the house even more while making the player think it's a fair game.

* SL casinos had a tendancy to lag sims.

* SL casinos had a tendancy to contain camping chairs which ruined the popular places list.

Strictly speaking though, I believe gambling (or at least game that are traditionally associated with gambline) is legal if a) it's free to play or b) doesn't play out any Lindens.
