From: Strife Onizuka This is why we can't have nice things.* Where "ResMods" means "ResMod" and where "ResMod" - of course - means "Strife". So we've got this guy, accountable to no one, who recently got a t-shirt instead of a job offer from LL who is becoming increasingly whimsical and editorial and condescending. By his unilateral power Strife is no longer a "resident" peer to other "residents", he is a force unto himself. He isn't even pretending to submit things to Linden Review - which isn't really saying much because they gave up their oversight about the time they anointed him. Strife, if you are going to lock a thread, lock it, but don't play schoolmarm, it ought be beneath you. No, strike that, I've yet to find anything beneath you. Note: this is talking about Strife in His Official Capacity, not Strife the avatar. This is permitted in the same way that disparaging comments about third-party firms that Strife the avatar likes are not permitted, but false statements about firms Strife doesn't like are allowed. Yes, this paragraph confuses me too. * /327/c1/218995/10.html#post1731947

Less contested threads have been locked before.
Doesn't seem to be such a big deal.

IMO, Strife has a really good nose for horseshit in threads, and for threads that are moribund but just won't die by themselves - he's like that cat in a nursing home that made the news recently because it would curl up and purr beside patients that would then die the next day - like 15 or 20 times! Unappreciated perhaps, but spot on.
Strife has a thankless job here, and he does it well.
So, Strife, at the risk of causing you to go into shock, Thank You.

I simply read it as stressing a point in reference to the recent "Why is there not a "General Discussion" forum?" thread which was valid considering how the closed thread had degenerated.

From: JessyAnne Theas Strife is a he? And I seriously cracked up at the This is why we can't have nice things.* Honestly, I thought this was funny as well. Strife doesn't have to be professional. He's not your lawyer or your doctor. He's a resmod. He may not even be a he, come to think of it. It seems pretty impersonal to call him or her an "it", but "he or she" is clunky. At any rate, how is this hurting anyone. Strife isn't going nuts with the locks and he cracks one joke when he locks a thread and people jump down his throat.

Mal, I don't understand.
Okay, he made a snarky comment. I don't see the big deal. While he is a moderator, I think that a little snark is fine so long as the threads are closed/submitted to LR for clear reasons other than "I don't like them." And that the reports against him are submitted just the same. Since most threads live long past their expiration date, descending into private discussion or flaming, I take the comment as a reminder of why we don't have a General Discussion board.

I think things could be a lot worse than they are. Strife does an excellent job from where I sit... and if I get moderated/locked... it's my own damned fault.

Mal, this war against Strife is unseemly. That thread needed to be locked and I honestly thought the "this is why we can't have nice things' was hilarious and very apt. Hell, if I were a mod I would have locked it too.
This one isn't worth fighting over.....

From: Lexxi Gynoid How do you know Strife is clunky? He tried to sneak up on me once. Heard him coming a mile away. I just wanted to add that I spent a couple years as a moderator at a car site I was active on. OMG. What a pain in the ass. It's awful. If you make any decision people get upset. If you don't make a decision they get more upset. if you don't answer a PM in 5 minutes, even if it's 3:00 am and you're asleep, they get hysterical. If the site owners screw up the site, something you have no control over, they blame you. Any little offhand comment you make gets twisted and becomes part of some conspiracy theory. No fun at all. It's a really hard job, especially when you don't get any support from anyone higher up the chain, which I gather is the case with Strife. I saw the thread in the other forum here where Strife was looking for more resmods and thought about it for less than 1/8 of a second. Hellllllll Noes!!!

This one isn't worth fighting over..... I thought it was a harmless line too, but the last time I said something like that it helped get that thread locked.

By the time Strife locks a thread, I've wished for it to die a thousand miserable deaths. I could care less what comments s/he makes as long as lame threads get locked.

Apropos the nursing-home cat: All fear the Cabbit of Death! Vaguely germane, from Jason Scott's blog: http://ascii.textfiles.com/archives/000446.html(And perhaps this current thread would find a happier home in /274/1.html.)
