From: Dinalya Dawes Gah, I was simply asking some questions regarding it...I wasnt attacking LL or the name at all, just curious if they even knew it could be offensive. I also do wonder if there are others that have offended people that most are unaware of. Where am I policing anything by wondering? I'm curious as to why you made the choice to quote my post (which was simply asking obvious questions) when there was a much harsher and 'pc policing' type post before it? *looks for a place to hide* Not to mention I also ended it with a comment about the obnoxious behavior, regardless of the name. Just like others have posted here, now that I know it is a place (geography and I never did get along LOL) I assume they didnt have any clue that it was an offensive term to some...like I said, even I didnt know until it was pointed out and I live with someone suffering from it.
To keep from taking away from the OPs point, my last post does have some questions I would be curious to have answers to....seeing as we have a wide variety of people here I hope to see some places to send newbies that are outstanding in helping them or even find a group to do more organized help for the new people in SL. She was aiming the comment at me, I think, and addressing your comment that the obnoxiousness should be dealt with at the same time. At any rate, to get back on track, there are some public orientation islands. NCI is a great resource for newbies and the Shelter is as well. A lot of us have copies of the Lucrezia Lamont newbie folder full of goodies. I can't remember the exact name, but it's a fantastic resource for new folks. I've probably handed out over 100 copies, and I always offer it when I'm talking to a new resident. Lots of resources, from notecards that explain how stuff works to landmarks where people can go for help, etc. I would direct people to any of those places. I wouldn't direct anyone to any of the infohubs or public land at all. The infohubs are a mess and public Linden land is too inviting for griefers. Folks who have been around for a while can deal with griefers, but newbs can barely get the box off their head, let alone handle being set on fire or orbited.

From: Gaybot Blessed Hmm, not sure, but I think Ahern is a pretty good place, even though it appears to be centered on the four corners of 4 sims. It has a cool store of freebies where I found an awesome bike to ride around on. I've seen lots of mentors there too. Thank you, I am doing some searching in world now too just to see what is out there. I cant imagine I would have done much in SL if I hadnt already known a friend when I got in, I would hate to be a newbie again!

I take the point of the original post and something needs to be done. But I've come across occasional nastiness at other public places - including one greifer who I AR'd who had a gruesome photo of a pile of dead dogs on his profile and a caption referring to them as being a certain ethnic group in Second Life.

I quoted yours only because it was the last post at the time, by the time I posted several others had come between. I wasn't singling you out in any way, the term policing was a general reference, to the feeding frenzy that happens when someone says something that may have a vague offensive meaning and all of a sudden it's blown out of proportion. No shot at you was intended directly. EDIT. Thank you Trout.

Must admit I have often wondered if the person who named it was clueless to the offense or just a Jerk. I can see why someone would snap about it...I knew it was an offensive name when I first saw it, have heard the term many times. So your not the only one who knew. Ans seein as you know people with that condition, I can understand why you got ticked and posted first , then thought about it later. Anyone jumps your case for it, should look at it from you`re perspective.

That is why you always see so many mentors, but mentors can only do the same as residents, we AR the griefers and educate others how to AR them as well We help new people understand SL and how to use it, we are not police and do not have special powers to ban from SL lands. anywho.. *mutters about Ahern*

Waterhead is also the name of at least four different locations in England, plus a notable resort hotel in the UK Lake district, and the SL reference could perfectly well be - and probably is - to at least one of them. It is unfortunate that the word has been used as a derogatory slang expression, but give the Lindens a pass on this one; I seriously doubt they are prejudiced against hydrocephalics. And if we are going to get all prissy and PC about every word that is ever used in a derogatory way, we are going to find ourselves with startlingly restricted vocabularies. You'll have to stop using "slope," for example (Vietnam era derogatory term for residents of that country), so no skiing or advanced math courses for you; and your local lakes and streams will have to be purged of those bigoted amphibians known as "frogs" (derogatory term for Frenchman). Grease is out, having been a derogatory term (along with "greaser" for working class youths, especially of Italian descent. You will have to ostracize yourself if you use the cleaning product Spic 'n' Span. Or if you refer to sauerKRAUT (Kraut being a derogatory word for Germans). If you RP in a medieval sim you daren't have a Chink in your armor anyway, but if you do you can't refer to it, tsk, tsk. Naturally, you will have to work to ban the works of the great author Joseph Conrad since one of his earlier works was "The Nigger of the Narcissus." Ditto Mark Twain's American classic, Huckleberry Finn, where what is now known as the "N-word" seemingly appears on almost every other page of what is perhaps one of the greatest anti-racist works of literature anywhere. And if you really want to join the ranks of the foolish in appearance as well as in fact, start campaigning against the word "niggardly," as if it ever had any connection whatever the "N-word" rather than being an adjective meaning stingy or begrudging that traces as far back as 1366. Or better yet, let's all quit looking for excuses to puff ourselves up and act all offended and chill out a bit, ok?

Anyone jumps your case for it, should look at it from you`re perspective. Waterhead is also the name of a location one is in england and the other is in Canada. Why do people automatically use the derogatory term. The waterhead in england existed long before someone coined the term for something else and I am one of those who has never seen it used to describe anything but the location on a worldwide map ------------------ As for the welcome area they were not as bad as that before err infohub whatever. The place you are given a landmark to once you leave the orientation places. It is every lagggy now it was not this bad when I started and I walked around and clicked the signs etc. However the last time I used it was awhile back as a landing area when other sims were offline. It was indeed lagtastic and quite busy. I kind of ignore griefers (they are turned off in my internal radar so they can do whatever they want with me and i just keep going on although orbiting can be a bit inconvenient but long ago I just flipped the griefer radar switch to off) When I landed there when I was new it was not bad at all. I guess its gotten worse and I'm not sure what LL is gonna do about it as basically they are slowly relegating themselve to sim hosts and are more nad more hands off. There does need to be a location that people can port two once leaving orientation areas and this is one of them.

Post #8 + Post #12 + post #20, Har. After you read those, if you still want to get all righteous, feel free, but it won't be because of me anymore. And the French deserve to be called Frogs. I don't terribly mind being called a Mick, and the Notre Dame mascot doesn't offend me in the least. I'm well aware that niggardly has nothing to do with black people at all, despite sounding like an offensive word. Shiite looks dirty too. Nobody has used the term "greaser" since the late 50's. "Slope" ought to be banned - I've never done anything other than injure myself skiing. It's cold and dangerous and it interferes with winter steelhead fishing. Steelhead, incidentally is not a derogatory term for people from Pittsburg, but it would be funny if it were.
Please also do me a favor and point out a few instances where I have gotten "all prissy and PC". I'd like to go back and correct those as well.
Honestly. I've had it. I'm done here.

Brenda, whew, glad to hear I didnt come off as badly as I thought there for a minute! TY for the reply I am talkin with my hubby atm and HE didnt know what it meant and HE has hydroyannothecondition. He said in reality we are all have water in our heads so why be offended lol. He honestly just laughed when I mentioned that its an offensive word to some. He is also asian so I asked about slope, he said "What? Wasnt it slant?" So he doesnt even know...Gotta love him lol He then said to be sure to say that no one can have crackers anymore, not even for the birds. *rolls her eyes* Anyway, I will try and stay on topic here lol I did some searches that werent very helpful (though I did find a group that hate the newbie genital issue, go figure). I guess I will just have to do some leg work and see some of them to see if any are any good at all. What about private places? Any ideas?

I love the irony of us getting our panties all up in a bunch over a thread started by someone named Gaybot. It wasn't that long ago where that name was cuase for handwringing here.

From: Gaybot Blessed This thread is kind of depressing...well, on the good side...In the past few weeks I have helped maybe 50-100 people. You're an angel. I must need to get out more as I've not seen any new residents in a while. EDIT: Wow, did this devolve in the time I was composing my brief post. Must be Friday.

Anyone know how many Linden land welcome areas there even are and how many new people are coming in each day? If its a large enough number, wouldnt it be in their best interest to supply more help! I mean, the more that stay, the more that speeeend

From: Gaybot Blessed Hmm, not sure, but I think Ahern is a pretty good place Ahern used to be my hangout. It's the one I'm primarily talking about when I talk about kids hanging out at the mall. I'm there now with a mostly-ruth avatar. There's no obscene particles at the moment (or maybe I have them turned off), and there aren't any megaprims filling the sky, but what is here is pretty typical. There's one guy who's a bit naive and a crowd of people are ridiculuing him in voice chat. Someone else is making stupidly loud noises in his mic. Someone else is soliciting me for sex. He's not the only one here doing that. Someone else is shouting for money. Pretty tame at the moment, but I'm still not anxious to return. But hey, in the time it took to type this an argument about vegetarianism has broken out. At least it's a conversation. Spoke too soon, they're back to ridiculing him.

I felt like I did when I was a new substitute teacher. Most ignored me, or at least didn't approach me in text, but some of the childishness was beyond belief.

Brenda, pm sent!
I suppose its better for these people to gather in one place (or multiple welcome areas, rather) to keep them from spending all their time harrassing larger groups of people at clubs and malls or explore areas and what not. I am just really concerned about the lost newbie that never comes back because of em and you would THINK LL would be too! Money money money of course!

From: Trout Recreant I can't help but wonder if LL knew that "waterhead" is an extremely derogatory term for someone who suffers from hydrocephalus. Frankly, it's offensive. Let's make fun of people who can defend themselves instead of people with severe physical and mental handicaps, ok LL? Maybe we could take shots at people with Down's Syndrome next. At any rate, who is sending people to Waterhead for help? The Lindens? They don't send anyone anywhere for help. They aren't even present inworld most of the time to any degree. I'm afraid "Waterhead" is already a very established and respectable name for many places all over the world. Because some people have decided to apply it to individuals with a medical disorder is unfortunate, but that is far outweighed by its usefulness as a place name. It isn't derogatory to use it as a place name. coco

Can we all agree that Trout has realized now that Waterhead was not meant in a derogatory nature and move forward with the point of the thread? Heaven forbid someone have an off day around here.
