Ok so.
You get 512 free tier with a premium membership. So, that's what it means by "512 paid tier."
You added another 544 meters on top of that. So that is what you are paying $5 a month for.

From: Jack42 Meredith ok everyone i bought 576 sq. m on one plot and 544 on another plot on the same sim What this means is that you're now paying $8 a month for tier, since you own more than 1024 square meters of land.

From: Jack42 Meredith Jessie is the name of sim Howdy Neighbour! I just got land there too I am not sure if there's any way to absolutely tell the terraforming limits of land before you buy, but there are only a very few of the oldest mainland sims that you can terraform +/- 40. Somebody older and wiser than me will probably be able to list them. Meanwhile, just stand on Jessie and look around at the general landscape ... if ever you see such extreme terraforming anywhere on the mainland, you are looking at +/- 40 land. I rent tier and find it much cheaper than paying directly to Linden Lab, especially as I am in Europe and subject to VAT. What you _could_ have done is rent just the extra 16 sqm above your allowed 512 and not paid the $5 at all. You might still do better renting the tier on all your land over the original 512, and as your total land holdings are now 1120 sqm, you are certainly better off if you create a group to own the land. Basically, tier rental works like Yasmine said, and because the land is group owned, you get an extra 10% tier allowance on top of whatever tier is donated (your "free" 512 + the tier you are renting). I think you can do this even without being premium, as the tier-rental alt who joins your group must be premium in order to donate the tier. If the tier-rental company goes bust, it would be the same as any land owned by a group without enough donated tier ... From: someone If at any time a group owns more land than they have land contributions for, Linden Lab contacts the founder of the group to let them know they need to either contribute more land allocation or release land within 72 hours, or else risk losing some of their land. (from the knowledge base) So, you may end up having to tier up, but you wouldn't just lose your land or content without warning, like you might if you rented land. Hope that doesn't just confuse you further

Yes, there's actually some interresting past about that sim. Just googling for "the Jessie Wall" should give you a couple of good hits

Mari started a thread a couple of weeks ago on the historic stuff in Second Life and provided some good Jessie links (thanks, Mari!) ... /327/a2/332744/1.html

It will tell you how much TIER the group has and how much of it is being used and it will tell you what your contribution is (in a box that you can type in to change it) and in parenthesis it will tell you if you can donate any more tier at your current level.

Somebody on these forums calculated that this is cheaper than tiering up, if you pay yearly for the membership. If you rented tier, you could just rent 496 and tier down to your original 512. With the group bonus this would cover your land. Don't do this until your tier is next due though, as you won't get a refund on this month's tier. Have a look at the land tab in your group's info (if it's working properly now) to double check the group has enough tier. Also, and this is VERY IMPORTANT, be very careful about group roles and who is allowed to buy and sell land for the group. The safest way is to make a group just for you and an alt (which is probably what you have done )

It is cheaper if you pay quarterly or yearly (not sure about monthly) to add an alt rather than jump tier levels. This holds true until you get up to either 1/8 or 1/4 sim, I think. I did the calcs up to 12 or 16 sqm of land way back.
