Says who, apart from you? The Community homepage, for one? 'We are a global community working together to build a new online space for creativity, collaboration, commerce, and entertainment. We strive to bridge cultures and welcome diversity. We believe in free expression, compassion and tolerance as the foundation for community in this new world.' Yeah, I think it's a lost cause too. ![]() |

He does. In a nutshell (if I'm understanding him correctly), it's much the same as a quote attributed to Scott Adams, "the holodeck would be humanity's last invention". And he presents a few valid points, if anyone actually takes the time to read it. Granted, it could have been worded a bit less confrontational. I think it's amusing, that every person who guffaws "good riddance" and "can I have your stuff?" at posts like these seems to forget the whole point of the world is to welcome people and make everyone have a chance to be heard and ideas exchanged. Every person that leaves SL in disgust is one less live person that keeps the world itself alive and prosperous. Seems it's all too easy to forget that. Okay, I agree, I was probably being a little too dismissive. But for me, places like SL are just a space to create stuff that others can view. It's not about escaping and living another life. SL doesn't have to be an escape, but Linden Lab does make it difficult for people like me by giving their so called "platform" the name 'Second Life'. Clearly an idenitity crisis. ![]() |

So summing up the entire post of OP.
You had a life, had hobbies, started playing SL, got addicted and now not even a hammer can beat you from your desk chair. EOF Well, that means you value your SL experience more than your old hobbies. Then log off, go do something. _____________________

As I read the original post, it came to me in a flash! After two and a half years in SL, the two word phrase I hit upon that best sums up Second Life is 'creative escapism'.
Yes, it can drain your energy from the real world at times, but that's nothing new. Someone once suggested that religions are a form of virtual reality that existed long before computers. I understand that exactly, although I'm not religious myself. I've mentioned before the Molotov Alva videos about the guy who supposedly uploaded his entire existence into SL and eventually decided to leave - made by someone who obviously had a deep experience of SL. _____________________

I have found that I am certainly addicted to SL, but I wouldn't consider it a waste. In fact, it has been one of the most amazing expansions of my mind. The variety of experiences that litter SL are quite amazing—things you would never encounter in your entire life. I haev become more open-minded and informed about things I never new about. Now, I realize for some the topic of sex is laughable in SL, but yes.... SL has expanded my horizons in the area of sex beyond anything I could have predicted. It has gone on to affect my RL and has made me feel more confident and open about my "quirks". I guess you could say SL has made me kinkier but damn if that's not a very good thing.

It always bothers me when a person slimes everyone else just before leaving.
In every situation it is always helpful to retain a sense of perspective. To me SL is the multi-tool of all multi-tools. It is simultaneously a phone, a theatre, an adventure waiting to happen. Not to mention a living breathing dynamic art canvas with plenty of voices willing to give feedback on your efforts. It is a connector of minds on a global basis. It is a perpetual exploration that is potentially impossible to see all of, as once you thought you have you would have to start all over again because much of it has changed by the time your done. So what if any valid points can we parse from the OP's message? Pay attention to your own personal priorities, get regular exercise perhaps. Try to make sure your leading a balanced life. Clearly moderation is the key. "In a nutshell, Aristotle said that virtues are a point of moderation between two opposite vices. For instance, the virtue courage lies between the two vices of cowardice and recklessness. Recklessness is too much confidence and not enough fear, cowardice is too much fear and not enough confidence, courage is just the right amount of both. This can be expanded to most virtues and vices. Some other means that Aristotle laid out were temperance (or self-control), which lies between self-indulgence and a lack of sensitivity to your own needs, and modesty which is between bashfulness and vanity." It's true. My boring real life was stolen away, and instead I am the Guvnah of a small but plucky nation state, here. I would be better off doing this In The Real! Anybody know of some ~stan country or banana republic in need of me? If you find it, let me know. I'll be your Eva Perron. _____________________

EOF Well, that means you value your SL experience more than your old hobbies. Then log off, go do something. This! Because the OP let it take over his/her life and now it has hurt their RL it must be the same for everyone.. It just has to be!! So now they are hit with a realization that everyone needs saving I Must post about things that relate to be convincing..but only bad things.cause good would kill my cause.. Neo is THE ONE,and only THEEE ONE can wake us up. The Matrix story was based from the bible and life of Christ.. The past.. If another guy shows up Claiming to be Neo and everyone around him is calling him THE ONE..Everyone run for cover cause he's not gonna be as nice as the first THE ONE lol we never hear too much about the great things Sl has because those people are too busy being in SL..It's always the ones that get bit or bite their own hand.. _____________________

Why is it called Second Life ? because people come here to do what they think they can't do in reality ! Because the impact of your actions in SL is not as huge as it is in RL….but the lessons about relations, about your inner self and about action-reaction are as huge indeed! Or maybe even bigger because in SL al things are moving faster and conversation has this "habit" of going on a deeper level.. But think for a second at how great your own real life would be now if you had spent on it the time you spent in SL on your virtual life. Yes, think about it. I did..and I would have spent a lot more money, risked a difficult but worthy relation…and risked my health by jumping naked of a building - ![]() So why do I say that SL and other virtual worlds are bad ? Because they cut you off from the real world and the real people. On the contrary…the longer I stay in SL the more I feel myself growing into a "better human" and the less I need tricks or hiding myself….I take the lessons from SL with me in RL. Not to mention the playful way of learning English and other languages… So the real world is were the souls are. You really believe souls are material? I know that my opinion will create a lot of negative responses, that's why I will not follow this discussion You know that you are unable to face other opinions then yours….bet you created a very open "real world" around you ![]() I am from Holland, have a good job, some hobby's, nice family, dear friends and I love to spend time outdoors, get walks every sunny or rainy day…..but sometimes I do need to colour my world a little, sometimes I need to find my own rainbow; and I noticed SL is a great help during this search - ![]() |

Actually I got my soul back from SL long ago. WoW owns my soul now though. SL can have it back when they make it possible for me to attack other people with my uber axe.

My soul is perfectly fine and in fact has been enriched because of SL. I could not have had conversations and become friends with people from as many countries as i have, could not and been at home where i am needed and at the same time be out socializing like i do in SL, could not have learned all i have about sustainability and debated so many global issues as I have in SL. As for all those places being empty and with bots....i spent all day sat at a music festival on my sims...there were about 30 people min there constantly for 8 hours straight and not one was a bot....they were lovely people that i danced with, laughed with, shared info with, enjoyed good music with and more.
SL is what you make of it.... _____________________

Depends. If a person chooses to come at me in a confrontational manner using terms like 'you people' and 'most people', being judgemental and accusatory about things they couldn't possibly know about (regarding 'why' other people do what they do, in this case, SL) then, no, I don't feel like being welcoming and friendly. Matter of fact, I shut down, because if you don't know me, in rl, then you really don't have a clue about my motives, and therefore, simply cannot make those sweeping kinds of judgements. All depends on the approach, in other words, 'Come Correct' and I might listen. 'Come ghetto' and, no chance, talk to the hand. |
