Hmmmmm... "Stealing your soul".... Didn't people say that about lenses and mirrors at one point in time? (^_^)y

;0 and cameras. a fave simpson episode when someone took a picture of the senior citizen's center and grandpa simpson comes attacking with his cane, screaming 'YOU STOLEE MYYY SOULLLLL!!'

though speaking of which, i was wondering earlier myself how many times and how many different ways people have called sl the 'looking glass' and have broken it behind them upon passing thru, though i'm sure which side they were standing upon at the time is prolly evenly split... ;0 so maybe op and i are on some same coincidental wavelength. ;0 i know i'm sure not done with my work in here yet... ;)

p.s. whups dammit! ;0 doubleposted, sorry bout that... :)

...and this is why we don't talk to cultists or neo-luddites.

are there valid points about substituting real life ability for second life psuedo-ability? sure.

but the same applies for extending inabilites, to SL realities.

It's true. My boring real life was stolen away, and instead I am the Guvnah of a small but plucky nation state, here.

I would be better off doing this In The Real!

Anybody know of some ~stan country or banana republic in need of me?

Talk to the guys in DC- they're working on it.

Obviously this is the Mother of all Friday Threads.... then again - April First is around the corner...

Dear OP ... you are absolutely right- it has stolen your life, your soul- your very existence But it's not too late- there's this guy in Nigeria that has the cure to it all.

But think for a second at how great your own real life would be now if you had spent on it the time you spent in SL on your virtual life.
Yes, think about it.

Think about this: if I could still dance, do acrobatics, gymnastics and springboard diving in my RL, I'd be doing it. However, a drunk driver took all of that away from me in 1978 and as a result I was paralized for three days. End of all of that activity forever. I was fortunate my neck didn't snap completely costing me more ability or even my life.

Fast forward 28 years, I discover a place where I can dance vicariously through an avatar. While yes, it isn't as wonderful as the RL dancing and other activities were for me, at least it isn't the same torturous prison I've been in for 28 years ... missing the joy of dance, choreographing every song I heard like a movie in my head, and hating the person whose selfish act cost me my ability to haul off and dance.

At one point early on after joining SL, I realized that these very activities: dancing, diving, acrobatics and gymnastics in secondlife brought back much of the joy I once experienced that had been locked away for decades. With regards to gymnastics and acrobatics moves, they do not exist here in the same quality I worked for three decades ago, so I've created many moves myself. An ongoing labor of love.

Almost three years in secondlife, and I'm still enjoying this ability and return of the rapture.

As far as I'm concerned, secondlife has restored my soul and renewed my joy in life.

Not wise to make such sweeping generalizations about everyone, and their reason for spending time here in secondlife.

But most residents don't even create something ! they just come here for chatting and shopping ! They spend real money on virtual clothes, virtual jewels, virtual makeup and virtual houses ! How pathetic !

Well, thanks for your opinion, Judgey McJudgerson!

Additionally, a virtual world is a soul less world, because souls ain't gonna be digital.
So the real world is were the souls are.

Which directly contradicts your thread title. Make up your mind - narrow, and unfocused, as it seems.

So the whole post is basically "yer all stupid. BYEEE". Gotcha.

Bye. :)

Had I spent the time I spent in SL and the SL forums effectively engaged in taking college courses I could have acquired a degree.

It's not likely I would have done that had I not been in SL, I'd have probably done something much less sensible than acquiring a degree and perhaps even less worthwhile than hanging out in SL and the SL forums.

QFT
Used to travel the world in my job and travel the country rock climbing, fly fishing, long distance, very remote, solo back packing. Both sacroiliac joints degenerated. Chronic diffuse meningitis. Missed 4 years work out of last 10. Going to see neurologist tomorrow hopefully to formulate a plan to keep from ending up in a wheel chair someday.

Before SL; suicidal, low self esteem, no contact with RL except watching my daughter go out the door to school and come in in the evening.

After SL; Learned I can not only learn anything including a few scripting languages, but also help other people to learn. Have friends first in SL and this gave me courage to meet new friends in RL. Regained enough self esteem to get back to work. I will watch my daughter continue to grow and graduate someday and have the courage to face it even if I do end up in that wheel chair. If I do ever end up in one thou I hope SL or something else is around where I can not only stand up but take a nice flight around the neighborhood in my 20 year old, perfectly formed body.

In my book the OP didn't make any valid points at all, the OP never "got it".

'the people in san francisco will not be idle over this! they'll not take our deaths in vain y'know.' hey he was talking about the lab. ;0 like 25 years before the grid existed...

p.s. i have the whole thing on tape from cable lol ;0 s'a great movie. 's'all ovah, s'all ovah... i been betrayyyed...'

endlessly sad and fascinating, that story. i remember seeing the first news reports first on my grandparent's tv - the one that had the really old remote, that made big clanging clicking sounds when you pushed down the buttons...

would love to have a sim just to try to rebuild an empty jonestown compound, with the tapes endlessly playing over the loudspeakers... be kinda like a big-scale version of the 'schizophrenic house'.

I sold my soul to an Apple II back before cyberspace was a twinkle in anyone's eye.

Never regretted it.

My soul *is* an Apple II, which is why I'm kind of low on ethics.

Well, I guess you could use DeMuffin, but it's cooler to remove the copy protection by breaking into the monitor and clearing the read-protect bit in Applesoft.

Too bad. You make a lot of valid points. But unfortunately, the manner in which you are presenting them is not much more than trolling.

Ya, that.

He does. In a nutshell (if I'm understanding him correctly), it's much the same as a quote attributed to Scott Adams, "the holodeck would be humanity's last invention". And he presents a few valid points, if anyone actually takes the time to read it.

Granted, it could have been worded a bit less confrontational.

I think it's amusing, that every person who guffaws "good riddance" and "can I have your stuff?" at posts like these seems to forget the whole point of the world is to welcome people and make everyone have a chance to be heard and ideas exchanged. Every person that leaves SL in disgust is one less live person that keeps the world itself alive and prosperous.

Seems it's all too easy to forget that.
