Not so long ago, I was the kind of guy who was fascinated by machines and dreamt to become a robot himself, or even better, to become digitalized. And for that matter SL was a very big step.

But, during the past months, I have become aware of the reality of the world we live in, that the media do not tell us about. Ugly things like who controls the economy, who starts wars and why. But also hopeful things like what the human mind is really capable of.
During this personal quest for truth, I began to feel more and more that humanity was on the wrong track. Not only are we losing the sense of values but we also slowly go away from the real world and our own selves. This is because of machines, computers.

When I found out about the possibilities of SL I was very excited, I became a scripter and started to invent useful tools that would help residents. But what was I doing in fact ? I was having a virtual life to help others in their own virtual lives. How absurd.
But most residents don't even create something ! they just come here for chatting and shopping ! They spend real money on virtual clothes, virtual jewels, virtual makeup and virtual houses ! How pathetic !
Why is it called Second Life ? because people come here to do what they think they can't do in reality !
But think for a second at how great your own real life would be now if you had spent on it the time you spent in SL on your virtual life.
Yes, think about it.

You think it's impossible ? that you'll never have that amazing body, or that incredible dress, that flying car or that house manor in the sky ?
Do you also think that you can't hover over the ground, levitate huge blocks, or talk to distant people without internet ?
Well think again because those so called supernatural powers are a reality, they haven't been invented by sci-fi authors. People with the ability to do telepathy (with the living and the dead), telekinesis and other mind over matter things have always existed.
(By the way, in the past I was also a cartesian who thought all this was bullshit - not anymore.)

So why do I say that SL and other virtual worlds are bad ?
Because they cut you off from the real world and the real people.
Because you start to think that a virtual world is the equivalent of the real world only it is not physical. Well that's wrong.
A virtual world is nothing natural, it's all made of codes and generated by computers.
Does it sound familiar ? Yes, The Matrix. The matrix is nothing but the internet of tomorrow where not machines (computers) but sick people behind them try to create in us the illusion that their virtual world is our real world.
(Not only the Lindens created a virtual world but named it Second Life - blatantly stating that they were gonna make money on the back of people who had real life issues - those guys can't have good intentions.)
Additionally, a virtual world is a soul less world, because souls ain't gonna be digital.
So the real world is were the souls are.

You're probably gonna say that there good things about SL like education and stuff.
But no. Anything that can be done in real is better done in real. If you are learning something, playing a game or even having sex, it's much better to have the participants in the same room, don't you think so ?

I cannot convince you with my sole writing, it is something you have to experience for yourself.
There are many documentaries and scanned books that you can find on the web that will open your eyes.
Here's a funny Spanish animation called Mercano el marciano (you can find a full torrent and English subtitles)

Even if I only wish to inform, I know that my opinion will create a lot of negative responses, that's why I will not follow this discussion. Those who really want to talk with me can PM me or IM me in-world.
I'm posting this now because tomorrow my membership ends and I'm not renewing it, so I won't be able to post again on the forums. I'm also selling my land.

I don't know what to say about someone who makes such statements and then says he won't come back to read them. Some of the points the OP makes are valid, but I guess he'll never know I think so.

Too bad. You make a lot of valid points. But unfortunately, the manner in which you are presenting them is not much more than trolling.

He's French. What they say makes sense in French.

It's true. My boring real life was stolen away, and instead I am the Guvnah of a small but plucky nation state, here.

I would be better off doing this In The Real!

Anybody know of some ~stan country or banana republic in need of me?

To Simil Miles,

I know you are coming back to check this forum, to check what others are going to say or how they would respond to your posting. You are wrong in your view about Second Life and people who are using it, if I may say so.

You can not generalize - there are some out there who really build lasting friendships and/or relationships in RL through meeting others ISL. There are others who come for research; and many companies using SL as a board rooms for meetings so they can cut down on their RL operational budget, and not having to send their employees out of town for meetings. Some were advised by their doctors to come and build up their self-esteem, especially for those physically handicap people - in RL they have to live their life by rules set up by non-handicap; but here ISL everyone is look upon as 'whole' .. as how you want to set up yourself to be.

If you do not like how SL is set up or whatever; you can not blame the people who start this game and calling them having "bad intentions" ... they are just like everybody else, they like to play and why not playing and earn some money ... there is nothing wrong at all about this concept. Won't you do it if you have the opportunity to do it as well??! Hmm.
If you closed your account, you have to pay to get it re-open - you might as well create a new account. There is no such thing as renewal here ISL; being here (forum or inworld) is FOC unless you want to buy land, etc. There are millions of people (real people) ISL, do you think all of them are wrong and you are right?

The traditional reply is "Can I have yur Stuffz?"

What you are saying tis true, but the real problem is not the concept of a virtual world where people can communicate in a constructive or creative way, it is that Sl is used as an escape rather then a aid to real life.

As the dehumanizing of humanity with misued technology marches on and people become less real in real life, then they will be perfect targets for those who ARE in real life with the intent of conquering the weak.

Ultimately you are referring to making a living. Some people do make a decent living with SL. A small group.

I hardly ever log in anymore. I logged in last night and for the first time in a very long time went all over SL to see the current state of things.

Besides the Search being worse then ever, I went from sim to sim to see the "showcased" places, the "Hot Spots" etc. So on a Sunday --nearly all day and late into the evening I found the evidence of people's creativity, all mostly empty,---redundant, lagged to death----"All dressed up no place to go."

Decided what the heck---got bit and became a bloodlines vampire---(you know you want it) then spent 3 hours with borked HUDS and borked websites connecting conflicting huds with mountains of notecards and absurd SL issue, that if they happened in Warcraft, the game would be laughed off the face of the earth and nuked for morbid.

Finally after overcoming all those glitches I wandered around a beautiful role-play sim, the map, showing 30 people scattered about, only to be able to find one, actual "living" avatar. Couldn't even find BOTS hiding in the sky above or the mud below. Now maybe they are sleeping in hidden coffins somewhere:) ....but srsly.

Although some who "got in on the ground floor" have had a better chance, with perseverance and a brainstorm, to use SL as a way to make an income, today, it is clear that if SL ever does really get it together, it will be only the very big money being able to utilize it for more then anything but a plaything and fantasy pastime.
Reinventing the wheel is about all people can do now with it. Srsly how many new genital brands and Sex beds and rental agencies and furniture and Prefab homes, etc. is needed?

So much redundancy, so much dreaming.

This. I get a rush seeing the excitement of somebody who will never walk again in rl, jumping on a virtual trampoline in SL, or running, or flying 'just like everyone else'. Virtual Worlds do wonders for a disabled person's self esteem and confidence level. I don't think being happy to see that, and working to see more of it, is 'pathetic' at all. What the OP is doing is right for him/her........but he/she can only speak for themselves and I too believe he/she will be back to read other's comments.

Hmmmmm... "Stealing your soul".... Didn't people say that about lenses and mirrors at one point in time? (^_^)y

Dear OP, you broke two cardinal rules with this thread.

a) It isn't Friday yet, obviously.

b) You posted it in the wrong forum. This should go into "current version feedback".

Better yet, open a JIRA on the soul thingie.

;0 k, i'll go back to rl and be someone else's bitch (instead of being my own bossy bitch in sl... ;0)

p.s. mistaking a movie for rl is a big, big, big mistake, and probably will make you much less effective at tackling rl problems for as they are, instead of some fantasy you've concocted within your own skull... ;0 just my word of advisement.

;0 and cameras. a fave simpson episode when someone took a picture of the senior citizen's center and grandpa simpson comes attacking with his cane, screaming 'YOU STOLEE MYYY SOULLLLL!!'

though speaking of which, i was wondering earlier myself how many times and how many different ways people have called sl the 'looking glass' and have broken it behind them upon passing thru, though i'm sure which side they were standing upon at the time is prolly evenly split... ;0 so maybe op and i are on some same coincidental wavelength. ;0 i know i'm sure not done with my work in here yet... ;)
