It would take a certain level of rashness to actually volunteer for the role - and rashness is not the ideal qualification for the job. For anyone who puts themself forward, it would be difficult to show that they didn't underestimate the task - a time consuming and a thankless task too! _____________________

For anyone who puts themself forward, it would be difficult to show that they didn't underestimate the task - a time consuming and a thankless task too! Having moderated other forums, I'm quite aware of what the task can involve, how thankless it can be, and the hassle you can cause yourself by having to enforce the rules on others that think they're exempt. _____________________

Did you provide some examples - giving links, so that LL could see you in action as a moderator and make a judgement on your suitability? Consistently enforcing "the rules" is only one aspect. You may be a very good applicant - but you do need to show some evidence to back up your application and, of course, there may be better qualified applicants - you have to accept that. If you are really keen for the job, then go for it, and tell LL why you are the right person to do it. Ask to be given a trial period. It could just be that no one has come forward that meets whatever LL see as the minimum standards needed for the role. _____________________

Do your rolling eyes mean you are being sarcastic with this post or are you glad he put the thread out of its misery in honor of Mari's rezday since she was hoping to see it locked? wait a minute...hold up..I wasn't a part of any of the griefing or arguing that went on in that thread..the last two pages..i did not even try to post cause i was afraid I would get bitten..I was simply trying to post here why it was locked..certainly not passing judgement on anyone about anything anywhere.. You can usually take me at face value if I rolled my eyes it was because of the utter mess that thread had turned into..it was worse than your average derailment..Thats all...If i muster the nerve to pass along an opinion about someone elses actions in these forums..there will be no doubt about who or what I'm talking about..my sarcasm tends to wreak...of igenuity  ((no subtlety here))  ok?..i meant nothing by that. ~Lana Tomba _____________________

You may be a very good applicant - but you do need to show some evidence to back up your application and, of course, there may be better qualified applicants - you have to accept that. I didn't even hear back to get a "thanks for applying but sorry" email... neither has anyone else I know who applied. Never understood why companies ignore people that apply and don't even let them know they weren't accepted, surely it's just common courtesy - and when it's an email, it doesn't even cost. If there had been better qualified applicants ... why aren't they listed and here active? Some months ago, Strife asked for people to apply as he wanted to stand down... I know loads of people applied, based on the thread at the time - yet not one new name has appeared or introducing themselves and been seen actively moderating. That was some months ago, and I'm sure that the 'training' can't be that long. _____________________

And why praytell does it have to be just one person..? I too have been part of a moderation team for a forum a good deal smaller than this one... and even then I was pushed in terms of the volume of traffic.
The level of traffic her is WAY too high to be the remit of a single user... or eve three or four... plus with an active 24h community like this, the moderator or mods are going to have to sleep at some point... Ideally you'd be wanting a small team of mods from all over the world... but that's just my two lindens... |

'Civility costs nothing' so it wouldn't hurt for a standard email to be sent to people such as Broccoli who offer to mod this forum, declining their offer. However, as this forum was set up not wanting mods (though not requiring them is different to not wanting them!) that's possibly why they don't bother responding to mod offers.
It's unfortunate there are so many mud-slingers ready to have a swipe at people who initiate threads asking what to them is a simple question, or to get advice/opinion on something thats occured inworld. We're all individuals entitled to our own opinions but some people don't watch the tone in which their posts come across and before you know it, threads have completely derailed and become a slanging match <sigh> I'm not sure really what the answer is as I've been on forums where mods have been selected who are not right for the job and they can cause more problems than they solve! As an unmoderated forum I accept that I'll come across all sorts of posts, some of quality, some not and just try to read throiugh the gumph and get to the good stuff! |

I suspect a lot of hard frustrating work by Strife wasn't worth the small results. Simple self moderation technique, if you don't like it stop reopening it. It will die eventually, but to keep opening it to keep viewing it and then call for it's locking seems conflicting. _____________________
