Okay, I never thought I would say this, but after over one and a half years in SL, I am finally tired of shopping Although on my last expedition, I found this gorgeous house, but it doesn't have enough window space for me for the views. There is a 1 prim wall that I can unlink...I want to try to add on, add windows. Also, add on porches/railings, archways, etc to the exterior. My questions is where do I go? What is your best advice as to where I should start to learn these things...jeez, I feel like a noob, well I guess I am in the building department And advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ashe

I'd recommend any of the great building classes around, through NCI or Lindal's place... or any of the others. I took a building class and it really helped me get through the basics. Or you can pick up a freebie house (there's lots out there) and just pick it apart. That's almost more fun.

If you prefer something a bit more self-paced The Ivory Tower of Primatives is fantastic and been around for years teaching building to non builders.

And when you get totally stumped by some silly little detail then the denizens of the Building Tips forum should be able to set you on the right track.

Ivory Tower of Primitives in Natoma! They have self paced tutorials you can go back to over and over. Many of us learned to build there over the years. It's been around since 2003.

Thanks Ashe Ashe, I empathize completely. I too, have been somewhat bored with the shopping. I've been thinking about clothing design however, my current computer (a laptop) isn't able to handle the graphics to accomplish this. I need to purchase PC, however, this isn't exactly a high priority at the moment for various personal reasons. Maybe, might be able to do it in a couple of months, but not right now. So, lately I've got this sense of ennui about SL and find myself not logging in as much, or kind of wandering around not quite knowing what to do. Just bought a new home and redecorated. That kept me busy for about a week. /me sighs.

I don't get tired of shopping per se, as that is how I explore the grid. But I am a bit tired of buying as I have all I need and then some, and nothing wears out. While my log in time has greatly decrreased for RL reasons, my spending when I am inworld is very sporadic. I did go an a mini spree the other day and managed to drop around 5K on stuff, but that was my first purchases in about a month. On one hand the 2 or 3 hours a week I'm inworld mean I don't really login and just idly sit around, but my contributions to the SL economy have fallen off sharply.

The Ivory Tower is a good place to see what you can do to a prim.
NCI has very good building classes as well.
I've been fighting with building my first house for far too long now. I tore apart freebie houses, houses I've bought that are copy/mod, and even clicked on buildings out in the world I've liked. Just to see the wireframe of how the prims were fit together.
And!...there's nothing like getting a few basics down, and plopping down somewhere to just fiddle with the prims.

You know, I think you hit the nail on the head. It's the actually purchasing which is the issue. I have so much, and I know there are things I haven't worn yet languishing in my inventory. The other day for G's party, I found a gorgeous gown I'd never put on before. Why not? Because there is just too much stuff in there. I find new stores which I love but can't bring myself to make a purchase. Found one the other day, "The Black Canary". LOVE their clothing, sexy victorian/gothic, very severe looking. But, kept thinking I had all this Silent Sparrow stuff I hadn't worn yet, which was *sort* of similar, but not quite. Maybe what I just need to do is spend a day trying on everything and tossing anything which does not suit me anymore. I'm sure that will spark some interesting in actual buying again lol.

@ Oryx & Jerboa - Thanks for the idea Oryx, I just came back from trying that out...I always have been a hands-on person rather than a book learner Jerboa, I understand what you're saying, will check into some classes also. I have to say, it is a great feeling to accomplish something new, lol.

Elora, Yes, I totally agree with what you are saying. I think that's why I change my house every month, for something to do to take up the time Ashe

My husband was taking a 5,000L a week "allowance", not to mention whatever I spend (typically NOT 5,000L a week though!) Hubby has decided to pretty much leave the game though, so I hope to see that drop significantly

As for help with learning to build...IM me when I am in world, and I will come over and help you, explaining as we go.
Some people like to shop, I like to help...it's what I do.

Me too, Ashe. If Lee is busy, give me a call. I love to toss primz around...sometimes they even come down in a shape resembling an actual object.

Like I said, I hope to see that go down significantly!
