Clubs often have greeters that greet people by name, announce songs, and make other announcements. When the greeter greets Hal, Hal then starts trying to carry on a conversation and makes often times strange comments about every announcement the greeter says.
ROFL! Sounds to me like these clubs need more creative greeters!

Hey I told you in the 3rd party viewer thread, if you made a naughty IM version, you'd have a mega seller on XStreet. Sell it with a detachable freenis, some virtual beer and Viagra....

You haven't been testing the bot out secretly in these forums under the name 3Ring Binder, have you?

Pep (If so, I hope you have now eliminated the unhealthy interest in human excretory functions.)

I'm from a small company called Zabaware and we specialize in artificial intelligence conversational systems.

If you want your bot to start posting here and need someone extremely simple to model, try Pserendipity Daniels. It should take you about 10 minutes to throw it together.

He has a very predictable posting pattern, only really posts on 7 or 8 topics, and has about 20 or so phrases which he repeats occasionally, presumably once he's forgotten he's already used them.

He is aggressive and hostile most of the time, but basically about as intelligent as a bag of hammers. You won't have any trouble modelling his behaviours. Just make sure your bot has access to a dictionary.

She has a very predictable posting pattern, only really posts on 1 or 2 topics, and has about 2 or so phrases which she repeats perpetually (eg 'troll') even when she knows she's already used them.

She is aggressive and hostile most of the time, but basically considerably less intelligent than a bag of hammers. You won't have any trouble modelling her behaviours. Just make sure you build a hysterical over-emotional over-reactive response in.
Fixed it for ya!

Pep (You would have to call it an AM, rather than an AI though.)

I would love to have a "Hal" to check for visitors and go round my shops and welcome people and answer questions. That is, one that can be set to check a fixed set of locations for the presence of avatars - but I would prefer a very attractive female version - a Halina.

Interesting!

I've seen Hal about now in 2 places within the last 3 days. He didn't want to talk to me yesterday when I said "Hi Hal", he just walked off and shunned me :(

I just found Hal stuck behind a game machine! I explained he would either have to TP out or cam out and sit on something, and he TP off!

Was it something I said???

edit: don't mean to laugh at it if it's troubling you.. It's just amusing to imagine the bots going at each other.

Wasn't there a Star Trek episode where Data watched some shallow life-of-the-party guy and decided that was the way to carry on?

PS, to the OP: I want to trial run a DominaBot. I think it would be MASSIVE on SL... message me in-world...!

I thought it was the male prerogative to be sexist?

There was the one where he followed the comedian (Joe Piscopo) around.

Only if a guy says it. It works the same as minorities and racial slurs. :D

Hal,

This is a cool idea. I'd thought of doing something like this, but I'm completely unequipped with the necessary software knowledge. Not even my Resident Geek could help with this one.

Does he respond to IMs? Switching to IM to say something to someone privately is a recognized social convention in SL.

Identification: You should go to the "Scripted Agent" choice in Hal's account (main SL webpage, left side, My Account) and identify him as a scripted agent (i.e., a bot). You should also make a group for him...because it means he can have a group tag, an additional line above his name. You'll need at least one other account to hold the group open, they need at least two members. Hal could have a nametag like, "Experimental Chatbot Hal Cybertar". That way you don't have to go through the hassle and expense of getting a special last name from Linden Lab.

If you want to give him a stress test, there's this class tonight at 7 pm SL time at a place called GQ Start... :)

Speaking as an eager student, I would not want Hal to steal focus at your class tonight!

Another thought...I've seen people with "AI" or "robot" type nametags they wear as jokes. You might want to give Hal a titler, like the ones noobs wear saying "click me for free $L". His could say, "I'm an AI. Click me for more information" and give out a notecard explaining what he is.

Figure out a way to give them access to inventory for sorting purposes and I'll buy two.
Hell, if multiples can sort at a time, I'll buy quite a few.

This could be very useful in educational sims. One of the challenges of a historic/museum sim is to have staffing available at odd times. A bot that could either give responses based on a historic personage/character, or provide help for interactive exhibits would be a great tool. At the very least, they could liven up historic sims that should have people but are only staffed part-time. For example, Virtual Harlem is a great educational sim, but having an empty urban setting undercuts the immersion...the sim is about people, not just empty buildings. Programming bots with roles would be a good way to keep things moving when there is no staff in-world.

I loved his comment about trying to decide how many politicians are sentient.

On the video, he was carrying a sign that says to click it for more info.
