In the first beta, and in this new one, you are given an opportunity to select head shape, eyes, nose and race. There is a warning that once you hit 'Done' you will not be able to change this for 3 weeks.
I have over 300 different avatars in Argent Stonecutter's inventory, and frequently change species and gender multiple times in a conversation. Not being able to change your body shape... forget it. No point in even trying it out.

Right now, I'd say that their priorities are to get the basics right and to slowly crank up concurrency in a relatively controlled fashion by issuing invitations to those who have applied.
Anyone who wants to see all the end-user flexibility that they experience in SL should wait a bit. :)

gpx are nice but the avatar control (what you can is lacking) movement SUCKS !!!
there really seems nothing to do. I couldn't find even a way to set any options /preference .. can't get into their form for testers won't accept the captu.. I did create a beard the AV mesh is nice but everyone looks the same, walks the same bah...

Won't even touch SL for years IMO! looks like a great GPX version of yo-ville ROFL

BM is more a platform for third-party developers rather than a unified world. This is one of the things that makes it very different from SL.
Third party developers will rent server capacity for their largely autonomous cities /worldlets(?). The rates are apparently related to the maximum avatar capacity that the city developer cares to budget for.
City developers can sub-lease space to others who want to set up a shop or other build.

BM has a long way to go before people would leave SL in droves for it.

finally got it to run and its EMPTY with nothing to do. play a crap golf game WORSE than tiger woods 06 lmao

Just in case anyone doesn't know. Blue Mars now has its own Forum, but its not as vibrant and outspoken as this one. It needs guys like you to start posting there.

PPP ( Am I the only one feeling uneasy using Linden Labs forum to discuss a potential competitor)

You've compensated for the unease by suggesting to Jumpy that he post in the BM forum.
- and he has done so :)

I spend a few minutes bumping about. I found the forced animation interactions interesting, lots of opportunity for griefing newbies there. I tried the "poke" animation, but it wasn't what I thought...

Updating SL Cache for less lag
09-13-2009 09:48
There is a good description of how to massively reduce SL lag here:

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/SLDEV_Discussion_-_Texture_Cache_Plan_of_Attack
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/SLDEV_Discussion_-_Texture_Cache_Plan_of_Attack

A big source of lag is the constant downloading of textures cause the cache is just too damn small.

In any virtual world, you have to download the content before you see it. The Blue Mars approach seems to pre-package it to download before you use it. Second Life has a just-in-time approach. But the small cache means you get to download it again and again if you travel around a lot.

Theres several things that could help with lag in SL:

* First and foremost give us a much larger cache. If someone has 1000GB on a hard drive, let them use it if they want.

* Provide downloadable "asset packs", which can be popular items, or content from a particular region. Let people download them offline from their SL play time, even make them torrents that can be shared. They would be the exact same data as what ends up in cache anyway, so it should not be an issue about content theft.

The idea is to offload the work from the servers.
