I am, it looks very promising even if it's still in what we can consider "infancy"

The first rule of Blue Mars is to never mention Blue Mars (in SL)

/me finally got the invite today..

edit:
/me watches the installer saying it may take several hours to download and install. 1.3GB.. Do they not cache stuff like SL - it's all pre-installed ala WoW?

You install the world on your computer. This allows them to use their servers for avatars. That is why they can have over 1,600 avatars in one region at once.

How's your turdy tiny world up there? ;)

just because you cannot play it (for as far as you've tested it), doesn't mean it's turd.
It could be that your computer is below the minimal requirements, or a problem (temporarily) on their side (e.g. login servers down, or connectivity troubles)..

Just be more patient.. i bet you would if you where a SL tester years ago.
If you'd called it turd then, and would never return, well, then your post here, wouldn't exist.
See my point? ;)

I'll hold all judgement on it till it becomes "official".

After all..... If I can run Crysis & Crysis Warhead on Ultra-High settings, getting about 90-110 FPS, and SL on Ultra settings @75-100+ FPS..... BM shouldn't be a problem :p

Odds of me 'crossing over'? Probably Nil.

I like to build without restrictions. ;)

Why would someone name their virtual product B.M.?

...unless it's a virtual laxative

BM==Bowel Movement

It's a polite term for what you do when you go to the loo

I think BM is a Murkan thing, a brand of laxative Oorpeens don't get. We got enough stuff over here to give us the runs in any case. For me, BM is the Turkish abbreviation for Birleşmiş Milletler, which is more commonly known in the West as the United Nations. The upstart virtual world would be known as Mavi Mars or MM, whereas İkinci Hayat or İH is Second Life.

As for the virtual laxative itself, I've tried it but I'll wait until it goes official before I try again. The Beta files are too cumbersome to download and the in-world experience put me in mind of a reasonably good-looking video game when I tinkered with it. Ack.

For all its faults, I really appreciate SL these days.

Which restrictions do you mean Tod? Blue Mars are granting developer status to anyone who applies. In the latest build they have produced a Cloth Editor so people who enjoy creating clothing have an Editor for doing just that, with everything built in. There is an Item Editor for creating objects, furniture, etc, again, with everything built in. In the next release there will be an Avatar Editor, and an Animation Editor. The build tools in Blue Mars are phenomenal! Just look at this comparison from a while back

http://rock-vacirca.blogspot.com/2009/06/creation-tools-second-life-v-blue-mars.html
(way out of date now with all the new stuff Blue Mars have provided since then)

City developers, block developers, and all tenants (residential and commercial) will be able to upload their content and builds into Blue Mars, the only people who will not be able to are visitors, and that AFAIK is the only restriction. I think that compares very well with all the other benefits that Blue Mars provides.

However, going from SL to Blue Mars, as far as building and creating is concerned, is a huge step upwards. It is like going for a job in a major construction company and telling them that your experience consists of Lego as a kid.

They sent a bunch of invites yesterday to people who applied a few months back for the Beta phase.

The install download is a biggie.
"OK. I've downloaded the Internet. Now what?" :)

There's a fairly steep attitude adjustment curve for anyone coming from SL. Just about everything is different. They really need to work on their "first hour".
It's pretty - with high-rez and no draw-distance issues.
It's buggy - but hey! It's *officially* in Beta.

Oh! I only signed up so that I could mention SL all over the place there :)

Ok, just saw the trailer for Blue Mars on Not Possible IRL . . . and was kind of blown away, not just by the graphics (which ARE amazing), but even more by the promised content, which looks pretty phenomenal. I love the user-generated content in SL, but won't Blue Mars have this, as WELL as the more professionally produced stuff from the Smithsonian, National Geographic, etc., etc.?

So, seriously. Why on earth (or Mars) WOULDN'T I move to Blue Mars when it's finally really open?

Dissuade me.

Yes and no.
It seems the entry level to start making things in BM is higher
Because of this while you will have profesionally made things, you will never have the variety of things SL has.
For example SL has thousands upon thousands of clothing designers
Many people who became successfull designers or builders in SL started just by playing with the in world tools and moved up from there.
I don't think BM has an easy entry level for people to make things, so most of the designers would have never got started.

That may not be a problem as there may be enough good designers for it not to matter. Only time will tell us.

I do have one question for people who have tried BM :-
If you are not a "designer" can you customize your house? Can you move bits around, color walls and make your own walls. Can you put furniture where you want it?
