Great idea for a thread.
Back before landbots drove most Mainland land traders out of business, I used to buy and sell Mainland. A few years back, there was a day called "Black Thursday" when Mainland prices dropped over 50% in a day. I was a small-time operator and was not hit that badly, but I did take a hit all the same. Sarah Nerd was pummeled that day by the correction. On paper, she lost a ton. Yet she still saw fit to set some plots to sale to me for nearly nothing so I could recoup some of my tiny losses. Someone who is still able to think of others in a time of crisis. That's a real act of kindness and I never will forget it. Edit: She was not a stranger when she did that, but when she was, she spent a half hour reconfiguring some plots she had for sale so that I could get a smaller plot than what she had originally set for sale. _____________________

Great story!
It doesn't need to be a stranger to qualify - just 'random' or unexpected I guess. Something out of the blue that still makes you smile long after...this story definitely qualifies. thanks!!_____________________

By far, the folks who took time the other day to help be find a hidden griefing object in Bay City. Was wonderful to see the not only visually hunt, but even break out their scripting-fu and make code to help locate the offending object.

Yes....but it was truly genuine, so she probably wouldn't feel it necessary to be identified, and might be uncomfortable with that.
She offered some business and some tips that would help me learn some new things, in spite of being in a similar business. All you need is one person like that popping up now and then, to remind you what SL should really be about. |

About 20 people came to my defense when someone posted an unkind review of the look and landscaping of the Mainland sim I used to have rentals on. Never did thank everyone here for that.

How about the people whose dungeon I teleported into blindly from the map, during my first day or so in Second Life? (It was the only way I knew to travel then.) Instead of yelling at me, they talked to me and even gave me a folder of shapes and a fairy outfit I wore for the next however-long until I understood how to change clothes. Lol
Or the person who months later when I was still wondering how to go anywhere in Second Life and why some avatars looked so much cooler, gave me 350 Lindens and a landmark to a shop? Neither asked anything in return. Pretty cool. ![]() _____________________

When I first came to sl this guy walked by me and said my avie was nice but HATED the hair. He even shouted how much he hated sl hair. So he gave me 200L and told me where to go to buy hair. I told him would pay him back and for those skeptics out there, I would have. He said no, I ask you to do the same for someone else that is new to sl.
I've been in sl almost 3 1/2 years and I don't know how many people I gave 200L so they can buy them some decent hair. Another time, still new to sl these strippers helped me do my avie measurements (OMG my boobs were HUGE then) through appearance. I told them how much I really appreciated their help. They told me I can show them my appreciation by making them some money. LOL. _____________________

On my first day off Orientation Island, a stranger came up to me at the Welcome Area, and took me to The Free Dove and showed me how to "buy" the freebies there.
I wish I knew his name so I could thank him personally. Instead, I think of him often, whenever I help out another new avatar. _____________________

Early in my time here, I posted a question about where one could change clothes: changing spots, anyone?
I received many good (and often amusing! ) suggestions and offers for help. It's because of that thread that I met many residents...and I thank you all for your kindness then, and to this day. |

When I first joined, I tp'ed into the Zen Gardens at Achemon. The people who created that lovely area took me in and showed me the ropes. It was their guidance and kindness that got me loving SL.
Man, if I keep getting nostalgic like this I may actually start logging in to the Grid again... _____________________

I think there is a lot more good folk than bad here. I have received all kinds of help and support- when I was new there were gifts of Lindens from a friend who helped me out of OI, everyday I am learning something new from someone - whether businessy and even still after all this time still stuff in general workings of the platform itself. In the builder group inworld so man folks - some even in 'competiotion' who reach out and answer questions and lend a hand. Here in the forum, friends that are there with a happy word. My own business has been helped immeasurably by all the folks in the Sales Advice thread - the tips i have gottenthere finall got me on the map.
So just a thank you screamed from the roof tops- if you can hear you probably helped me in some way. _____________________

Too many to list, but two that really changed my early SL and kept me plugging away.
While brand new and waddling around with the default everything, I ran into a lovely girl and asked her "how did you get a tan?" (Had no idea about skins. She gave me a transferrable skin. I then asked about her hair. She gave me $50L and took me to Gurl6 and showed me the cheapie hair. Also gave me a folder of clothing, added me as a friend with the invitation to IM her with any questions. (Like I knew how to IM at that time. lol)With my renewed interest in SL (now that I didn't look like such a doofus), I started buying clothing, but I didn't know how to open the boxes. I used to hang out at a particular nightclub (since it was the only LM I really had and didn't understand Search yet) trying to open my box. Of course I ended up wearing it on my head or something stupid. The club owner, Pat Wunderland, was there asked if he could help, changed his land settings so I could open my boxes there and walked me through the process. If it hadn't been for these little nice gestures, I probably would have quit out of frustration. |

I had really good experiences from the get go in Second Life. As soon as I passed through the birth canal of Mama Linden, I wandered a bit helplessly through the orientation area until a nice person answered a bunch of questions, gave me some freebie clothing and took a picture of me telling me to make sure to keep it. It's probably one of my most treasured snapshots lol:
Shortly after that, I wandered into a beach party where I started to chat with some people wearing some blingy shoes I didn't know how to take off, asking a whole lot of questions while having a couple of laughs along the way. One kind girl just up and gave me 1000L after only talking to her for maybe 10 minutes. I never asked for it or implied I was in need of lindens but she thought I was nice and funny and wanted me to enjoy my experience in world. Many other folks helped me out along the way by being gracious, helpful, understanding and offering things like free land to me. I learned a ton of stuff from attending building classes where volunteer teachers take a whole lot of personal time to develop great classes and offer them up for free. There can be a lot of frustrating things about SL from LL policy to griefers to drama queens, but I prefer to focus on the positive and have subsequently always tried to pay it forward. It can be really easy to get yourself wrapped up in the negative but if you can take a step back and get some perspective, there's way more good stuff out there than bad. _____________________

Once I get my Zindra land I am giving my roadside PG Mainland to a noob wanting to start his own business. If more of the Zindra Migrators donated their land to new players we would be promoting new business and keep all the yellow off the map.

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

I don't know that she is active in SL anymore but Ava Glasgow really went above and beyond helping me out when I was interested in obtaining some land that she owned, I will never forget her kindness to me and my partner at the time. She used to be very active in these forums but I have not seen her for a very long time, I hope she is doing well.

Has someone done a random act of kindness for you? A couple nights ago a random stranger was kind enough to curl my toes.. It was appreciated Back in my early days, I knew this oldbie that would hang around the welcome areas helping random people. I always appreciated the info and stuff he gave me to fend off the horny noobs, like the vanish animation that worked so well. "Outta sight, outta mind" he'd say with a lol, and he was right. It's a shame that those areas have changed so much since that time, now they're just clique fests and mostly devoid of the caring types that used to make appearances there. _____________________
