http://secondlife.reuters.com/stories/2008/04/22/linden-lab-picks-online-marketing-executive-as-ceo/Thanks to Persephone for pointing it out to us at SLUniverse.com From: someone Linden Lab picks online marketing executive as CEO Tue Apr 22, 2008 3:00pm PDT
By Adam Reuters
SECOND LIFE, April 22 (Reuters) - Linden Lab said on Tuesday it has selected online marketing executive Mark Kingdon as its new chief executive, replacing founder Philip Rosedale.
Kingdon is CEO of digital marketing agency Organic Inc and a former senior partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers. As of May 15, he will take control of day-to-day management and operations from Rosedale, who will become Linden Lab chairman and work on product development and strategy.
Kingdon described himself as an occasional Second Life user who created the avatar Marcus Voom in January, 2007. His newly created avatar is “M Linden.”
Rosedale told Reuters in March the company was looking for “someone who has experience with and a passion for growing this type of company — a software platform company — from 250 people to thousands of people.” He said on Tuesday that Kingdon’s history of overseeing complex projects paired with overall management expertise made him the most attractive candidate despite the lack of an explicit technology background.
“I would call myself a very balanced general manager. While I don’t come from a technology background I’ve been working with technology for my entire career,” Kingdon said in a joint phone interview with Rosedale.
Kingdon wrote a widely-read column in August, 2006 touting Second Life as an attractive opportunity for marketers. In the months after his piece was published, numerous blue-chip real-world companies entered Second Life. However, a subsequent backlash led many of them to pull back. He said that bringing back big brands was not a priority.
“Maybe it was the right place but definitely the wrong time for most big brands,” Kingdon said. “I’d like to see a continuation and even acceleration of the incredible in-world development we’ve seen from engaged, highly participative residents. that will create the richness of experience and vibrant economy that’s so important. If there are companies that can participate in the organic growth of Second Life, it’s a great place for them.”
Kingdon added that he plans to “magnify the very best” of Linden Lab’s quirky corporate culture, which currently allows employees to choose which projects they want to work on.
“But, I also believe that in highly creative, innovative cultures, that people have to be voluntarily aligned with a direction. As much as possible it’s essential that they choose their focus,” he said.

They can't even bring themselves to blog about this? Ho hum.
Well it's nice to see they've appointed someone and not being a techie is what I think the company needs. Hopefully he will bring some customer service skills too.

From: someone “But, I also believe that in highly creative, innovative cultures, that people have to be voluntarily aligned with a direction. As much as possible it’s essential that they choose their focus,” he said. Well, that answers if the "Tao of Linden" will make it through. That will be a big difference to the Lab employees who have seemingly been allowed to work on what they wish. A casual SL user that joined in Jan. 07. Hmmmmmm. He won't likely exhibit the culture of SL. I wonder how much our world is about to change?

From: Novis Dyrssen FYI, it just showed up on the official blog. Ironic that the story goes to Reuters, forums, press releases then finally where SL users are to look for communication (LL official blog). Kinda shows the food chain. LOL Communication for the win.

I for one welcome a change in the food chain. Now, if I could only be at the top of the food chain... the Tao of Linden would be put to proper use. *flushes toilet*

I wonder what kind of compensation package they offered him to poach him from Organic? The company went private in 2002 but you can get a copy of his old Employment Agreement filed with its annual report in 2001 and his base salary was $350,000 plus benefits, $7,500 a month to cover residential rent for up to 2 years, and stock options.

Here's Oganic's blurb on their corporate culture (mostly used during recruiting), presumably largely defined by M: From: Organic Corp website When we embarked on defining our values, we approached the challenge organically: we turned to the teams. Everyone was asked to define what makes a great Organic. Answers poured in from across the agency, and what we found was that regardless of office or discipline, five answers kept coming up. Great Organics: love to solve complex problems, think creatively and holistically, have a can-do attitude with great follow through, find inspiration by working together, and know that integrity is the heart of exceptional work.
These values ultimately became the "rules of the road" for corporate culture and agency traditions. One tradition, in particular, really brings us together and allows us to celebrate and buld community within each office: "Beer Bash." Every Friday at 4pm, each office takes the time to unwind after a long, productive week. There's usually a fun theme, snacks, refreshments, a possible Xbox game going, and groovy music playing. It is a tradition almost as old as Organic itself!
Another aspect of our culture that we are committed to is diversity. In fact, it's paramount to our success if we are to truly understand the consumer landscape.

From: Dagmar Heideman ...$7,500 a month to cover residential rent for up to 2 years... To be fair, if he was living in some far away isolated repressed country, he may need some cash to relocate.

I do hope Philip allows M to come into his own with this position. If Philip keeps a hand on him and guides him to adapt to the way he did things nothing will improve likely. SL really needs a fresh direction and a commitment to a stable platform, something Philip never showed ownership of. Being Mark works with large corporations on ads, etc I see what Phil liked. He will likely continue the focus on getting corporations in and interested. As long as some of the focus comes back down to our level and what we are going through things could be a fresh start.

I don't expect any major ground breaking decisions coming from the new CEO. But that's not really the point. What he's going to do is to give Philip more time to steer the ship. Hopefully Linden Lab will no longer be the ship of fools it has been for the past three years.
We need Phil to get back to applying his vision again. That's assuming he's not given up with all you perverts in Second Life. Hard to have a lofty vision for something when all the people wanna do is dress up their Barbie dolls and virtually screw eachother all day long.
