Mop the floor. I wouldnt want to start cleaning the whole house in case it came back on line and have to stop with a pile of cleaning profucts on the floor.

I suppose I'd try to find out what happened. Make a blog post wishing the Lindens good luck. Read and post on facebook about it. Curse the loss of my linden balance.

So far as alternative virtual worlds, there's there.com, as mentioned above, and good old Active Worlds, plus Hipihi and Novoking in development, and Vast Park, also mentioned above. There's also the Japanese based Meet-Me, which I'd love to try but I think you have to do some typing in Japanese in order to register. Theres's also old Cybertown, and for those who like to play games, there's World of Warcraft and the Entropia offerings. Those who want to chat and play some short term sports style games might try Empire of Sports.

Once you get to a level within World of Warcraft that allows you to travel fairly easily between regions without too much chance of being killed by critters, the game can be a quite surprising good social mix, especially if you add in a good guild and play in a regular group for questing etc. If you add in the graphic scenery that's even better.

Finally if Blizzard ever allow/programme homesteading (The Lord of the Rings do) it would be much better still. WoW is not all about just killing things.

-------------------

Second Life is no longer unique although I accept it is possibly the largest "user added content" self construct world.

And as I type this post, I find myself doing what I get paid for in real life, which is predicting trends and thinking financially. I am going to hazard a guess that SL will not grow much more without the loss of the "walled garden concept" that in turn underpins the virtual SL economy

Yet, in turn the act of doing that, thus enabling the going from here to there concept (as we do on the internet by hyper linking) would destroy the virtual economy. Imagine being able to upload/download textures, 3D builds, and software for free. Many folk would welcome that, yet in turn it destroys the reason for being here for many others, leaving the only way of making money by server licences fees direct to Linden Labs, and perhaps private servers (tomorrows equal of today’s private Island Sims)

And server space and rentals would in turn fall sharply to perhaps what it costs today to rent web server space, which in some cases is also almost free.

That’s my own longer term prediction now, either further growth which by the open garden route will almost destroy the closed Linden economy but enrich Linden Labs, or the maintenance of a closed garden which will eventually be superseded by something else, and a slow but steady death of the SL grid

I'd probably get back to work on fixing up my old VW. With gas prices the way they are, I really need to be driving it more anyway.

If you need help or information about that let me know:

What if SL died suddenly - out of the blue - what would be your first thoughts and what would you do ?

I have to admit to thinking that maybe "it's finally happened" everytime the LL website goes down :)

I'd re-establish contact with my SL friends via AIM or ICQ, and find someplace else we could hang out together on-line. There are a few RP forums and MUD/MUCK areas that, while not as satisfying as SL, would at least do for remaining in contact.

I would also try to determine what happened, and keep an eye out for any possible revival later on. Because there is so much tied up in Sl that it is very unlikely it would remain entirely dead for very long.

I would think/hope that SL would be sold to a Ebay/Amazon/Google type company before just pulling the plug. There is too much potential in SL, and it may take a company with the finances and smarts to realize that potential.

OK... horror vision but...

What if SL died suddenly - out of the blue - what would be your first thoughts and what would you do ?

(Btw I´m sleeping much calmer since I made sure to be able to contact those who became part of my life...)

I would call the florist and send flowers to its funera.

Note attached:

It has been real, RIP.

It happened yesterday, for a little while.

I went to check the forums, like I do every morning. 500 server error...no website. Tried to log on. "Despite our best efforts..."

Checked to see if it was my router. Nope, I could get into other websites.

Fidgeted for an hour, compulsively checking the website and SL logon.

Finally got in.

So...I guess my life would essentially be over. I'm pathetic.

I would definitely keep in contact with my SL Family via e-mail and get back to writing my second book.

I would be sad. And then use the extra time and energy on another creative endeavor. Perhaps work on a few more films, work more exclusively in Max for practice, take up Zbrush (which I've been meaning to do)...or just game a bit more.

Then I would wait for a competitor to come out with something, join it, and kick some major ass!

i'd find my sl friends, and we'd still keep in touch. maybe other games like WoW, or over IM's. and if i couldn't find another virtual world where i could earn money, i'd focus on one of my other kooky business schemes. it would hurt for a while, both emotionally and financially, but i have enough good things going on to pick up something else.

Hmm.. I'd look into some other artistic endeavor and for my MMO/Social.. I got City of Heroes, which also sates my need for pixel killing.. err busting.

Otherwise, SL just suddenly disappearing? As long as I don't get billed for the premium, I'd be.. eh, about it. Probably think the feds finally caught them or court ordered closing. Something wild and conspiracy theory like ;)

Ooh I would hope that I could still find my friends I have made. :(

Find something else to fixate on paint, quilt, or try a new hobby...run a marathon the entire time thinking... darn a tp to the finish line would be nice right about now. :p

If SL went away...
04-18-2008 08:52
Nic sits in her computer chair and sets her coffee mug on the coaster. Taking a deep breath, she grabs the mouse. She waits with bated breath as the login bar fills. And...

She's inworld! Building, flying, trying on clothes. Her avatar is a thing of beauty, her skybox a dream home. Ah, bliss...

Someone in the real world is shaking her shoulder. It's her son.

"Mom? Are you okay? You've been sitting here staring at a blank monitor for an hour. Hey - your computer isn't even on!"

Nic shakes herself and plasters a weak smile on her face. "I'm fine, son. Just, um, sat down for a minute to wait for my coffee to cool."

I would build a scale model of my Egotherapy Centre out of rice grains.

Actually I'd probably spend more time on our standalone island, Wootonia.

I'd ask Philip if I could have his stuff.

Maybe hire a band of entrepeneurial young programmers, get some equipment and start my own virtual 3d world with user-created content, a wonderful social aspect, and a market driven economy.

I hear there are some people looking for such a place.

SL simply cannot die, its immortal. People like myself keep the installers on their hard drive, and there is Opensim out there and advancing to provide other grids other then LL's. So even if Linden would collapse as a company and fail, the community would one way or another keep making SL clients (either improving the official one if licenses would allow or go on with the community-made clients), and be running their own sims.

So even if through a miracle LL just vanished without a trace with all of their servers, the SL technology would go on even if on other grids, with small modifications or would be called something else, and people could even hang around it locally (IP 127.0.0.1) or in LAN. RealXtend is an example of this.

Anyway, to further answering the question, if SL -could- die it would be an extremely sad thing. The SL technology is something unique which I know many have high hopes in, and people could never have anything like it anytime soon (not like its compared to every MMO you find laying around).

Everyone here is familiar with the Mad Max series of movies, right? If LL died, it would be a lot like that. Except for the Linden Oceans. They would be like Waterworld. Kevin Costner floating around drinking pee, hooligans on jet skis, a really angry Tina Turner...wait..I got confused. That was Mad Max.

We're renaming the Hangout in anticipation. It shall be known as "The Thunderdome" henceforth.
