We should adopt a metric clock, where one (metric) tick = 0.0864 old-style seconds. 1000 ticks in a kilotick 1000 kiloticks in a day (one megatick) So would 12 a.m. be 0 or 1 megaticks? Or do I mean 12 p.m.? Midnight (12 am or 0000) would be 0 kiloticks Noon (12 pm or 1200) would be 500 kiloticks (or 0.5 megatick) A megatick is one day. One kilotick is 86.4 seconds. If you wanted to meet someone at half-past ten in the morning, it would 437.5 kiloticks. It doesn't make any sense. Lias said someone would start talking crazy about the metric system, so I tried to oblige. . _____________________

There's a joke in there about dropping the ten megatick time bomb, but I'm too tired to think it up.

This is a highly amusing thread, and pleasingly international to boot. But there's a genuine problem at the heart of it:
I really wish Linden Labs would adopt a consistent house style (preferably the 24 hour clock) and tell us what it is. Live Chat and I recently wasted ages of each other's time trying to sort out a billing issue caused by this very point; matters were complicated by the fact neither of us were too sure whether by "midnight on the 1st," the other party meant 00:00 on the 1st or the 2nd. LL needs to specify, in some prominent part of this site, what means what, time-wise. I am now taking bets on the likelihood of someone at LL making a decision and posting it. _____________________

What if every sim was able to set its own time, without regard to existing timezones? We could let the market decide.
Some sim owners might find it convenient to be 17.5 minutes behind Cleveland, for example. . _____________________

High Noon is fine.. it's just I'd rather avoid confusion between "High 12 am" and "High 12 pm." Where I live, during the summer "high noon" looks pretty much the same whether it's 12am or 12pm. During the winter, midnight looks pretty much the same at 12am as it does 12pm. I'd take the poster more seriously if he'd stop with the little swipes at the US. _____________________

At the Open Office meeting today I asked what day/time standard was going to be used in Blue Mars (crossing my fingers behind my back that it wasn't going to be HST/12 hour clock) and was told that the day/time standard was a function for each City Developer to determine. So, if you are doing a Battle of Hastings city, the year will be 1066, etc nice, I like it.Rock |

Hmm; millennium bug meets Unix time 1970/2038 problem and gives birth to Gregorian calendar hack. Whoa, we need to get that watch in here, the one from the other thread. . _____________________

Not EVERYONE is a computer geek, ya know! in most cases in REAL LIFE, I am more interested in knowing the day and the month, than the year. And when people ask me what day of the month it is, I VERY seldom reply "It's the 07 of September." True! You say "It's the 7th 9th" or alternatively.. "It's the 9th 7th" _____________________

That way, if they had traffic bots, they could get a weeks worth of traffic points in an hour. Or They could advertise rentals at L$4/month, but make the month last only 5 minutes of RL. and stuff AAAAAAAANNNDDDDD...... the major advantage..... Thinking about that baby thread... If they were expecting a prim baby, and didn't have the L$ to pay for it at birth, they could slow their sim clock and put off the evil day.. _____________________

1 guinea is 21s/- (shillings) or £1/1s/-. £1 is 20s/-. 1 crown was 5s/-, though the comemorative crowns issued by the Royal Mint these days have a face value of £5. 1s is 12d (something Latin involved there). 1d (old pence) is 0.41666666666666666666666666666667p (new pence). One fathing is 0.25d. And you forgot to mention the half-crown at 2s/6d, the florin at 2s/- (10p) and the groat at 4d. Just my tuppence worth ![]() Edit: you did later on. Apologies. Shall I explain the rules of cricket next? ![]() From a google search: The old system was based on the system of weights used for precious metals, the Troy system. A pound of silver = 12 ounces = 240 pennyweights = 5760 grains in the Troy system. The value of the British Pound Sterling was originally one Troy pound of silver. The original British penny was a small coin containing one pennyweight of silver. For centuries all coins worth a shilling or less were minted in silver, while those above a shilling were gold. Coins weren't minted at a value of more than a pound as there were few things with values that high and the weight of the coinage would have been excessive. While the basic denominations were Pound [£ - from the Latin liber], Shilling Old denominations: Farthing = ¼ penny Halfpenny = ½ penny [Ha'penny] Penny Tuppence = 2 pence Truppence = 3 pence Groat = 4 pence Sixpence = 6 pence [tanner] Shilling = 12 pence [bob] Florin = 2 shillings = 24 pence Half Crown = 2½ shillings = 30 pence Crown = ¼ pound = 5 shillings = 60 pence Ten Shilling Note = ½ pound = 10 shillings = 120 pence [dollar] Mark * = 13 shillings 4 pence = 160 pence [used in old real estate transactions] Pound Note = 4 crowns = 10 florins = 20 shillings = 240 pence [quid] Sovereign = 1 pound [gold coin] Guinea * = 1 pound 1 shilling = 252 pence [used to price expensive items] * There is no actual coinage in these denominations, but they appear in court papers and advertisements. The pre-1971 penny was huge. A bronze coin larger than an American silver dollar, you dreaded getting them in change. Fortunately there was usually a large paper-maché figurine in shops into which you could insert them as a donation to charity. The existence of the tuppence, truppence, & groat made sense when you thought about carrying five penny coins in your pocket or purse. If you have ever seen one of the antique bicycles with the large front wheel and tiny rear wheel, and have been to Britain, you can understand why they were called "penny-farthings". Took me ages to mentally switch to decimal currency lol Inc _____________________

I see.... the true reason for the OP 12 AM is right before 12:00:01 AM. 12 AM on Aug. 28TH will come about 5 hours and 35minutes after I post this. 12PM is referred to as 'noon' simply because it comes approximately in the middle of the day when the Sun is close to its azimuth in any given time zone in the continental US. Ak is totaly s.o.l. as far and noon and midnight are concerned. _____________________
