From: Ralektra Breda As I flew (slowly) about with my ARC of 1, I couldn't help but notice ARCs of 4k, 5k, even 6k...I know ARC isn't the be all and end all of measurment but dang.... Oh, BTW, the ARC display will signifigantly reduce your framerate. Kind of a Catch-22 there. If someone gripes about my ARC, I don't care because the ARC info display is lagging them a lot more than my avatar is.

From: Lance Corrimal i could not care less about a virtual fundraiser for a charity in a country that to a large degree does not even acknowledge the existance of the world outside its borders.
now, if there was an european RfL, or german even, that would be a different thing. But as it stands now i will do my donating for good causes outside SL, as usual. Right, this charity only goes to research American Cancer. /me mutters under her breath.

From: Milla Janick I'm not taking off my hair and putting on a bane skin just to make things easier on the luddites who won't part with their Radeon 9200. It's an X300, thank you very much.

Well slap me like a red headed stepchild, I should never have donated to the Australian Red Cross for the Vic Bush Fire relief!!! I didn't know there was a rule (I'm kidding, of course.) And yea American Woman and yea, Guess Who, that was mine. Only it got stolen before I could get to it.

If I go i'll wear my black windlight storm trooper suit.
People need to lose all the scripts period. Huds as well.
An alternative is to require entry by an estate manager gatekeeper that makes them sit on a pose ball and then reads the script time for that avatar. If they refuse to descript they get banned. Hopefully we will get the script time by avatar in the top scripts display soon. Then we can spot script overload sim lagger griefers and AR them.
In fact may as well remove LSL and prim attachments and get rid of user created content. Get rid of prim vending too. Drop the L$ currency. Who needs any of that in a college classroom or corporate meeting room anyway?
If there is no avatar in second life will they be able to hear the lag?

probably bad advice seeing as how the people that run them might not like it but anyway...if builds on, rezz a box, sit on it, keep it in edit and move around with the arrows

I hadn't heard about it, thanks. I might go to just take a look, to see if there are any designers I hadn't heard of (which would be most, still). If I stay in SL it will be for what's being created there.
I will wear a freebie pair of cutoff jean shorts, a painted on halter top without prim attachment frills, and go barefoot. Cool?
I might draw the line at donning slider hair, though...

Doing RFL for 3 years now, I've heard a lot of this. I even left a company because the owner had the same opinions, and I couldn't agree with him. The fact is, cancer is a global issue, and the money that goes to ACS does not just go to benefit Americans. It uses its money not only for things that -affect- the entire world, but in programs that are actually -in- other countries. I respect your desire to give your money to local charities, but please don't assume a charity is bad just because your opinion of the country as a whole is bad. Not everyone in America is as ignorant as you seem to think. Thank you.

From: Argent Stonecutter And it would do nothing to prevent the "wading through jello" effect. Yes and no. It's true that it's mostly to reduce client-side lag, but it's also going to reduce the number of prims and textures that each client has to download as it enters the sim or viewing area. The Clothing Fair Staff is doing all that it can to help ensure that lag is kept to a minimum, including disabling scripts and build for those not a part of the fair, watching script times and collision rates, making as many prims phantom as are reasonable, and disallowing networked vendors. The first day of the fair was pretty bad, with everyone rushing to get in and shop as we opened, but since then it has calmed down quite a bit, and all of the sims are easily walkable. We've also been sure to restart sims as soon as we're aware that they're becoming laggy. Please, if you haven't come to check out the fair, do so. We have some great designers (and yes, men's stuff, and are working on more for next year!) And, most of all, it's for a good cause. Everyone has been affected by cancer in one way or another, and this is a great way to spend a few L$, get something new, and help raise money to find new ways to fight this terrible disease. And, please, cut down on your prims when you come. You don't have to go bare, but a little consideration can mean a lot, not just to client-side lag, but to the entire sim's health. Thanks!

Relay for Life is an International Affair
03-19-2009 03:04
From: Lance Corrimal i could not care less about a virtual fundraiser for a charity in a country that to a large degree does not even acknowledge the existance of the world outside its borders.
now, if there was an european RfL, or german even, that would be a different thing. But as it stands now i will do my donating for good causes outside SL, as usual. Relay for Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society but it is also an international affair. In real life it takes place in 19 different countries outside the United States. Currently 20% of all RFL of Second Life fundraising goes to the international organizations before it goes anywhere else. If you would like to find how RFL in SL has helped many of our SL international community... IM me in world. I can set you up with the Chair of our Mission Integration Committee who can tell you dozens of stories how Relay for Life in SL has helped those affected by cancer in some way internationally...even if it is as simple as making sure someone has a ride to the hospital for their treatments every week...a person that lives 50 miles away from the hospital. I could go on with many stories...but you would only be taking my word for it. Contact me in-world and I'll set you up with the person that has all the facts

Relay is international
03-19-2009 03:10
For anyone who hasn't looked at cancer.org? You can link from the American Cancer Society's website to Relay for Life. Relay for Life is world wide, on every continent. You can see the calendar of Relays being held EVERY WEEK somewhere on the planet.
There have been international programs sponsored by ACS for years. Cancer knows no borders and that is one reason Relays are held to fight this disease.
And as for the Clothing Fair, of course it is laggy on the first two days. LOTS of people want to see what designers are there, what new clothes/accessories are out, what the auction outfits look like, etc. Even with 8 sims for shops and 1 sim just for entertainment, it just is a bit crazy the first couple of days. I had absolutely no difficulties tonight walking around.
I've never minded lowering my ARC when I've gone to a race, inworld tv show, concert, or fundraiser. My friends and I compete to see who can look the best with the lowest ARC, lol.
For menswear, try Barefoot Apparel, Styles of EDO, Santoria, I know there are at least one or two more. But, the names escape me right now and I really need some sleep. Got to make another circle of the 8 sims tomorrow to shop some more, lolol.

I am Co-Captain of a RFL team. Last year's donations were about 250,000 US dollars...how many Lindens is that? We have members in our group from all over the world, not just the US.
I've been to the fair twice (wore my RFL bandana from the Hair Fair). There are men's clothes...women's clothes...kids clothes...and there are some freebies! If you buy from the special RFL vendors all of your money goes to ACS. They also have clothes that you can buy without the donation.
Lots of NEW stuff is out now...this is where the designers showcase newly released items!
Happy Shopping!

That's physics lag, and it's caused by avatars and other physical objects moving around and colliding with things. It's not client lag, it's not network lag, it's not even script lag since the new script scheduler which came in at least a year ago. The way to fight physics lag is to get people to sit down.

From: Jerboa Haystack although one should look at a charity on its merits, not on its locale. Well, but then it really would be charity rather than a political issue and many cannot handle that.

From: Bradley Bracken Let me know if there's many men's clothes. I'm especially interested in items that will show off my glorious ass. Umm - the best way to show that off is to NOT cover it up. From: Jerboa Haystack I don't recognize most of the vendors on that list. Anyone know if any of them plan to show GUY STUFFZ? hehe...I feel like that guy on the soapbox in the town square predicting Armageddon. I know most of the following stores sell guy stuff and think the others do -- so there should be some at the fair: Ripped, Style of Edo (very nice store too), Silk & Satry (silks though), EROS Fashions, SN@TCH, Bare Rose, Adam & Eve, DCNY Clothing, Rebel Hope, SD Wears From: Brenda Connolly I was severely disappointed at Shoe Fair. I went armed with fistfuls of Lindens, but found a lot of what I already own, or new stuff that didn't interest me. Ditto

ARC? How to find?
03-19-2009 07:40
EDIT: Nevermind! Found a site! ^^
I know I've seen this before but for the life of me I can't remember. What exactly is ARC, and how do you know what yours or another persons is? I see people saying that they saw someone at the fair with a 3k arc. How does that all work? I'd like to know so I can learn how to keep mine low at events and the like.
Thanks!
