Yes. Casual acquaintance. He knew my rl nickname only....knew my profession....knew what city I lived in.
With those tidbits....showed up at my office....pretended to be a prospective client for over an hour.....he thought it was "cute." Cute is not a word I would use to describe that.
Be careful.

I've met one person from SL in RL. We had known each other for over a year, and had messaged each outside SL and exchanged photos. Having talked a great deal, we realised we had a lot in common. Enough that when we had the chance to meet up (we live at opposite ends of the country) we took it.
It was a public meeting, but still nerve-wracking for both of us. Once we'd settled down it was fun, two friends out having a laugh. It shouldn't have been a surprise, but it was a shock to meet someone apparently for the first time but know so much about them.

Be careful. Woah! Freaky crazy stalker man... O_o I haven't met anyone from SL myself.... though in my Warcraft days I did meet up with some guildmates, and we are still really good friends even though I don't play anymore.

From: Rime Wirsing RL is RL and SL is SL and ne'er the twain shall meet.
However, whether cowboy, pirate, alien, robot, ghost, skunk or plain old Rime I try to bring the same ethical and moral judgment to SL as I maintain in RL.
Rime I do too, as SL isn't role play for me. Still, I have met someone in rl that I originally met in SL, a couple actually, and it was great. But then, I"ve met 'lots' of people from my various internet sites over many years and it's always been great and never had a problem. Once hosted a house party for a whole bunch of them, they came from all over, it lasted all weekend. From SL, one couple, and they are now simply RL friends of mine. Should clarify that I have never and will never meet anyone for hook up purposes, this was a friends thing only.

From: Nika Talaj /me notes that the next SL Community Convention is in San Francisco this August, for those who want to meet LOTS of SLers. http://www.slconvention.org/ . I actually had considered it, but I would probably have to take my other half and that would take most of the fun out of it. He really still thinks SL is dumb and mostly a game of "let's play dress up".

He really still thinks SL is dumb and mostly a game of "let's play dress up". Same in my house, how many times have I heard: 'Glorified chat room'. And this from a very techy tech person, not a computer illiterate. One of those "I have enough issues with my RL to be worrying about a SL". These people seem to think this is a very clever and original comment, I've heard it many times, I"m sure you have, too. Last night, after overhearing me say I had fun at a SL party, I was asked what's missing in my RL, that I need to go to a fake party in a fake world to have fun.

Yes! I met my friend and in world business partner, Rosemary Galbraith. We had a lot of fun! We drank too much at ladies night and smoked way too many vanilla cigarettes. It was awesome and we do plan on it again.

Not that I met first in SL, and later met in person. Nor am I particularly interested in ever meeting in person with the people I know in SL. Even my dearest friend that I have in SL, my Partner of several years, is someone I have never met in RL, nor would I plan to go out of my way to make such a meeting possible. I prefer my privacy, and I don't ever date on-line friends.
There are three people who were already friends with me for several years, prior to hearing about SL from me, and 2 of them tried it and decided they didn't like SL, and never interacted with me while in SL, and one is active in SL but only rarely interacts with me at all in SL (though in RL he's one of my best friends).
There is also one person who I knew tangentally from a RL club that we both belong to, who is so far the ONLY person I have met in RL who, when I mentioned the building I do in SL, has said "Oh! I know what SL is! I'm there too!". And though we exchanged avatar names, and I think once managed to send an IM to each other, I have yet to manage to meet that person in-world.
Only 3 people that I know in SL have ever talked to me on the phone even. All three were business clients - people hiring me to build full-sim or multi-sim projects for them in SL.
One business colleague of mine, who I have only spoken to on the phone, recentlt attempted to access SL for a corporate-sponsored celebration. They didn't plan on coming back. Said about all they managed to do was bump into walls, and there was no one nearby at the so-called celebration for them to talk to anyway.

From: Treasure Ballinger .... I was asked what's missing in my RL, that I need to go to a fake party in a fake world to have fun. I got that question ONCE. My response was "do not ask that question unless you REALLY REALLY want the answer". I've not heard that question again, even though I do still get flack about SL.

I've met a few, though it's usually that I know them in RL, then introduce them to my SL self down the line.
(And really, aren't we meeting all SL people in "RL?" We just happen to be meeting them via a computer at the time)

I have only met one SL friend in RL, but there are a handful more that I'd be delighted to meet some time, geography permitting. My close friends in SL are as real to me as any RL friend and I'd have no objection to meeting any of them. A few of them have my RL email address, or are friends on FaceBook, or other ex-SL connections. My closest SL friends are wonderful people and I love them all.

XD Actually, I'd argue you get more "me" here then you would if we met RL because our anon identities allow us to peel off some social stigmas that we usually can't avoid out in meatspace. (^_^)y

From: Chris Norse Nope, no one ever travels through Western Kentucky. My mother's family (except the two of us - me and my mother) have lived in the same tiny KY town for generations. Ever hear of Frenchburg? Next town up the road is Mt. Sterling. It's in Eastern KY though, so next time I'm up that way I'll wave.

During my time on IRC I met many people RL who I originally met from IRC.
*Some became good friends *A few I dated - in town and long distance (long distance dating is VERY difficult to maintain) *Mostly a bunch of us would meet in a group (safety in numbers)
Of the above, there is one person from IRC in SL that I met in IRC days, so guess that counts for meeting someone in SL.
*Have talked to many I haven't met personally on the phone or via Yahoo Messenger.
I make sure I take safety precautions when meeting outside of a group.
The most interesting thing is that so often the "picture" I have in my mind of the "person behind the monitor" just from my impressions of him/her online can be EXTREMELY different in RL. I believe I'm pretty much the same on or offline.

I have met about 15 of my SL friends irl. Apart from looks, they all were the same irl as in SL, and all the meetings were great. This summer I am flying to the US with my husband to spend a week at the summerhouse of my "roommate" in SL. This will be our third meeting, despite living on different continents. I am lucky enough to have made some lifelong real-life friends from different countries on SL, and dont regret meeting any of them

There are several folks I'm close too now I hope to meet up with at some time in the future. Talk to them on Skype or voice, they have my email, etc.

From: Treasure Ballinger Last night, after overhearing me say I had fun at a SL party, I was asked what's missing in my RL, that I need to go to a fake party in a fake world to have fun. I see it the other way - not that we lack something but the types who ask this do. An imagination. I haven't met anyone IRL from SL. I don't intend to. I met a few people from 'chat rooms' in the past (not recent past), but just as friends and nothing more. Some are still friends, good ones in fact. And this is years later. But it was a rarity. That they lived nearly on my block was too much coincidence to pass up. I find a friend vibe just gets different behavior/expectations. I'd never meet anyone for whom or from whom there was a flirt vibe. No special reason, it just isn't me. Since RL people do not understand what SL is I expect the reverse is true in its own way. Not that they expect me to rez things or fly IRL but still. In some ways I think people do and would. Also I think my life's just different than it was when I was open to meeting people from the internets. More of an open feel to it (then). To everything there is a season & all that.
