Katt gone? Forum update/mod questions

She communicated enough with me inworld to give me a headache. I cannot say how happy i am she is gone. All her constant warnings in IMs. I finally told her to stop IMing me and use my email. The last time we spoke i was supposed to be suspended. And ironically that ended up being her last night.

She even suspended me once and then when she told me why and I went to the thread and said "where am i advertising another grid?" she said "oops" and apologized...It is like she did not even read the thread at all, just reacted without reason.

I have to agree with you there. Her chasing us in world was out of line. Somewhere in the CP i clicked an option giving them permission to *email* me. Not IM me.

To future mods hoping to learn from this thread, please take note of this.

I said it more gently, but yes, this is how I feel - I don't miss her. I don't delight in anyone leaving but I don't think she added anything. And upon reading that she would IM people personally inworld... eesh. If you're going to do official communications about forum business, it should be done via email or the private message system here.

No one wants to log in to "Briana, you did this in the forums and this is your 2nd warning, your first warning is on file from 2005". Email me that tripe. Don't ruin my immersion by letting your fingers do the walking to IM me about how i broke your forum rule, leave me a PM, on the FORUM. It is not as if she is saying 'defend yourself', she is instead bitching, reprimanding, and sanctioning you and that type of B.S. can be kept to my email.

And bringing up a warning from 2005?? FFS!

Yes, she informed me that they keep files on everyone for their forum activity and it includes warnings given from long ago, which must mean from when Jeska first started.

El Oh Effing El! I love it. It's like getting called into the Principal's office in High School and being scolded for something you did in the 3rd grade. Now I know why they want to bring in the teens. It fits the management style.

I can't say I ever had so much as one word from her. Perhaps special attention was only for SPECIAL people who had something extra special to say on the Forums in the first place. *smiles so sweetly*

But there's a difference between moderation that is strict-yet-fair, and moderation that is capricious, inconsistent, supercilious, insulting, and frequently just plain wrong on the facts.

Most of those on the wrong side of moderation plead innocence.

I wasn't on the wrong side, and yet I tend to agree.

I wouldn't doubt it. That seems to be human nature, unfortunately.

But it doesn't follow that there's no difference between fair-yet-strict moderation and capricious-inconsistent-insulting moderation.

Both can be wrong on the facts. But a fundamental difference remains.

All moderation will insult someone. Nobody likes being chastised....well maybe in certain circumstances they do, but that's a different point!

Before Katt arrived plenty of people were crying out for better moderation, Katt provided that and yet, it upset people, they didn't like the style, they cried foul.

You can't have moderation without offending someone. The question is, whether no moderation is better than some moderation?

The forums need moderating, otherwise LL will apply the ultimate moderation and close them down, and none of use here would want that.

You've misunderstood my posts on this topic.

You seem to be assuming that I've said 'the forums don't need moderating' or 'everyone whose posts have been moderated has been falsely accused'.

I've neither said nor implied either of those things.

What I've said is that there's skillful, effective, and fair moderation----and then there's the opposite type of moderation.

I agree that no moderator will please everyone. Some of those accused of wrongdoing will actually be guilty of moderation-worthy actions, but will still be indignant at being accused. And this can take place whether the actual moderator actions were fair and consistent, OR...otherwise.

However, the fact that some forum-users DO commit moderation-worthy actions does NOT negate the reality that some moderation is more skillful, fair, and effective than other moderation.

I didn't see any of it - not in RA, anyway. There have been loads of threads here that should have been moderated while Katt was around, but none were that I can remember. This place was allbut unmoderated. Whether that was LL's intention or not, I've no idea, so it's not a criticism of Katt, but it is a criticism of whichever Linden decided to do it that way, which could have been Katt.

We maybe forget that forum moderation was not Katt's primary responsibility. She had some sort of role in most of the resident-facing communication, e.g. blog, videos, wikis, podcasts. The job description she filled was onerously broad.

It really should not surprise us that she left, regardless of the circumstances.

IIRC the last thing she said about forum moderation was that the plan was to outsource it to a third-party company. It will be interesting to see if that happens now, or if, in this cash-strapped economy, anyone at all at LL is assigned to see to the forums.

You have a short memory Phil. There were many of us clamoring for better moderation, including myself. I wanted RA to be strictly moderated so that it truly was about Resident Answers rather than some of the silly threads that go on. I wanted to ensure all were answered. I was not the only one.

Since then I've changed my mind. It seems to be running fine overall plus I finally have a grasp of how important LL thinks the forums are....not very. So, for now I say let the good times roll and have some fun plus get some questions answered along the way.
