Why?
It's summer time, kids are out of school .... or he's a newb and accidently muted you... or he's esl and had trouble understanding you or he was a griefer and just wanted to cause trouble. I once saw a guy in a freebie shop purposly going around pushing people, repeatedly bumping into them... I thought he was just a newb untill I saw his group title said "Hate Me!" .... some people just have strange ways of having fun. |

This may sound crazy, but I feel a bit sympathetic because when I first started, I had no idea there were places people didn't want you to go and stuff. I freely walked around in homes like I would a website ![]() Unless you ignorantly went on with your stroll after the owner told you to leave, perhaps even several times, I don't see the similarity to this incident. The guy was told to leave and he refused, so there's not really a "newbie did not know better" situation. And seriously, if he knew the sit on a prim to get in trick, he had at least some basic understanding. But I wondered about another aspect for quite some time now - how do those newbie visitors end up at private homes after all? Some are hardly able to use movement control, have no clue about chatting, but they manage to pull up the map, find a place which might not be even listed in search, but hidding high up in the sky, and TP over? Ehrrr? |

Oh walking around is so much fun....

If I had a dollar for every skybox/treehouse/fancy castle/fortress etc... I've explored in the last six weeks, I could take all of you to dinner. 99.9% of the time, the sky boxes (not sure if they were really sky boxes. Some of them were treehouses) were empty. They were lavish. I liked the ones with fountains and pools and lots of landscaping. I know now I'll never build anything like that due to prim limits and a basic stinginess.
Actually, finding/seeing a live person in a sky box would have been a real treat! Most of SL is empty. Ironically, I think bushwhacking is good for newbies. Coming into a world with no sense of geography feels weird. Walking and looking at the map and flying and looking at the map teaches you a lot. Seeing how people build teaches you more. Simply setting your parcel no-rez and no driving prevents vandalism. My land is in Gaeta (Hartley is the sim) and walkability is a major issue in that part of the mainland. And yes, thanks to the folks on this board for teaching me how to foul a security orb: Just sit on anything availble and let it make noise. The more noise it makes the longer I sit. I am a frustrated entomologist so the beehive wouldn't work. I adore bees. I have two hives on my parcel but they are friendly. My own parcel is open because it is vandalism proof and I believe in maintaining walkability in a region without roads. My house will also be open when I get it rezzed again. It's vandal proofed so why not let others see my handiwork from the inside? I have had two ugly encounters with property owners wanting "privacy." One owner read me the riot act when I flew into open country beyond her "Potemkin Village" on a private island. The other owner simply ejected me from afar. I never saw him. I returned to the other owner's property (I'm banned from the private island but had landmarked the area near where I was ejected) and sat on his parapet and photographed myself as a momento. I looked to see if there was a defacation animation because I would have liked a picture of me defiling his pretty castle in revenge. I did not find the animation so I just took a picture of myself trespassing. |

Thanks again for all the help on the security side...That has now been dealt with..My main concern is WHY did he want to get in, even though he knew I was there...Also WHY did he stay until the landlord ejected him from the skybox...This behaviour does not add up.. Nobody can truely KNOW why he wanted to get in except him. Perhaps he was just trying to annoy you. Maybe he didn't have a good command of the English language, who knows? No use dwelling on it though. You got the problem taken care of, case closed. -Blu- (You may be right...I may be crazy...) _____________________

I agree with others here. No one can really answer why except the person who did it. It sounds like he just wanted to annoy you.
I was in my home talking to my friend one time when a stranger opened the door and just walked in. I asked him to leave because this was a private house. He did not response so I told him that he would not do this in RL, just walk into other peoples homes and just sit down. He then said, "This is not RL." I replied "Yes, you are right, and I dont have the power to do this in RL." I then ejected him and banned him. Some people just do not respect others privancy. I leave my home open and you can visit and look all you want when I'm not there. But, I expect others to leave when I ask them when I am at my house. |

Exactly. I'll second and third that one. I haven't had an intruder (While we are there) yet, but if my wife or myself are there and are disrespected like that, they'll get the same treatment as if in RL. First kindly ask to leave and if refuses immediately faces a freezing, dressing up and tossed home, as well as a report. No further discussions or playing. Zerock |

I'm with Iyoba and Zerok. They can't even muss the sheets, so what's the harm?
I'd've invited the guy to sit and chat and given him a cup of tea. On the other hand, if he'd proved to be a boor (like the guy that shot me while I was having a conversation with him and his companion), there's always Freeze/Taunt/Eject/Ban. _____________________

A quick thanks for telling my how he got in..But I cannot understand why he wanted to get in and stay there, with me in the skybox...Also why he waited until the Landlord appeared and ejected him...Would anybody have any ideas on this point... Because there are jerks in the world. When I first came to SL, my alt owned a lovely home in a community type sim (on the ground). Doors locked, blinds drawn. (This was before I knew walls/blinds have no real meaning in SL security.) This was a large house and I was upstairs late at night RL time trying on new clothes. I also had the lights low in my RL home so everything was semi-dark and quiet. Until...I saw on my Mysti someone within range. I know it sounds silly but due to the lateness of the night plus my RL low lighting, I actually "felt" like someone was breaking into my home. I quickly threw on some clothes and went downstairs to see this chick just wandering around my house. I politely asked why she was inside my home uninvited. No answer as she continued looking around. I asked a second time, a bit more annoyed, if she would please tell me what her purpose what in being there? Again no answer. This continued until she finally left. I talked to my landlord the next day who clued me in on the sit trick or the "create a box-sit on it-move through walls." He installed updated security devices by the door which ejected/banned unwanted intruders. Which is now one of the reasons I live in the sky with a security orb. In the last year I've seen less than a handful of people show up within our range then watched them fall off the radar screen. One particularly interesting guy kept futility banging into our walls while I counted down to security ejecto time. |

Maybe what is now your tastefully furnished home was once a place a newbie might want to tp to, and he is just as confused as you are. Not sure what would explain invading a hidden high-in-the-sky skybox, though, aside from pathological nosiness. Or perhaps someone with a penchant for practical jokes spreading an LM around to your place named something like, "For a good time, TP to Lillith Hapmouche?" |

Some people are social types and love to have neighbors over for a chat. In RL which carries over to SL, my home is my haven of peace and privacy and open only to those we invite over on occasion. this is why i rent in land that lets you buy the parcel and have full admin controls over the parcel, they are expensive, but i'd rather that then renting pre-built homes

Randy, we are not mind readers. I agree his behavior is curious. But much of someone else's rationale is just that, their rationale. Perhaps he saw something in your skybox that sparked an interest. Some people are just jerks and that is that. Get the security orb that was suggested. I have the same kind and it rocks. If you spent most of your time trying to figure what someone reasoning for doing something that you can comprehend, you will never get anything done in sl nor enjoy it. _____________________

Yesterday, I saw someone in my store on the map. I was going there anyway, so TP'd in. The minute I came into view and without any hesitation, she rezzed a cube, and promptly sat down on it - a well known trick to hamper griefers.

One possible explanation: Some of the packages in the freebie stores contain old landmarks. Some of them may be very old landmarks. Maybe what is now your tastefully furnished home was once a place a newbie might want to tp to, and he is just as confused as you are. OK, that's a point for mainland, I suppose. But still leaves room for doubt if you live on a newly created residential estate. Anyway, I set my parcel to disallow landmarks and just hand a copy to close friends, so I'm rather annoyed than confused if anybody suddenly lands on my beach. Now I started stalking intruders... most recently, some bloke appeared outside (in the flower pots), got run over by my pitbull. I set my cam on him to watch and sent a kind "What the *very hot place etc* do you want?". As expected, he did not respond, but walked up to the front door and entered. Got run over by my cats in the living room area. Another kind remark from me to get going. Cat no. 2 ran him over again. I did him a favour and froze him for a couple of minutes When I let him go again, he was probably believing in dungeons and dragons and walked out. I kept my cam on him and raised draw distance to max. He flew over to the empty neighbour plot and I sent him a "Well, there's nothing" in IM. He walked on and ended up in my friend's home on another plot, where he sat down on her balcony. And I said "Get off my friend's furniture" ... well, he didn't listen to me when he was in my home, but at this point, he TPed away. Never to be seen again. Yet. ![]() Now that was the fun part of intruder stories. But we had another incident, when a guy used every home on the sim for his sexual encounters. Once my roommate happened to catch him live and in colour - engaging in kiddie porn with an obviously underaged looking avatar. Reported and the guy got banned in the end. I had the chance to talk to the female part of the invaders and what I could gather from her explanation, he had claimed that he home was his own. *lurks at the portrait online indicators opposite the door* ... well, whatever. Aside from the very illegal stuff he was doing, I found it plain rude tell such lies. "For a good time, TP to Lillith Hapmouche?" Do we know? ;P Anyway, if you end up in my home and don't meet me there, at least answer to my IM asking you whether you had a good time. ![]() |
