I ran into an interesting issue that I was hoping the forums might help me solve. Is it possible to hide your online status completely? I know you can uncheck the "online status" on your friends list but you still show up as "Online" in groups. How do you block that from showing up as well?

In other words, no.

You can stop groups from showing up in your profile. So people won't know what group to join to find if you are online.
There are still ways to check though. I think if someone IMs you and if they don't see a 'person is offline' message they will know you are in-world. |

Also if they know your uuid they can check your online status with a script, getting someones uuid is not all that hard too, there are plenty of scanners that can find someones uuid just by being within 96 meter of them. |

Also if they know your uuid they can check your online status with a script, getting someones uuid is not all that hard too, there are plenty of scanners that can find someones uuid just by being within 96 meter of them. And quite a few online databases that you can search, to get someone's UUID.. now including the SL search! As mentioned previously, the old "Alt-F4" solution works best, if you're really paranoid about people knowing you're online. Failing that (I know, it's a drastic option)... you could just mute the person, ban them from your lands, and possibly go so far as to abuse-report them for harrassment/cyber-stalking. Making another SL account is also a solution, but one not to be undertaken lightly, since you won't be able to transfer all of your "stuff" to the new account. There's also a trick you can do with your Busy-message... basically you make it look the same as the "user is offline" message... and people will assume that SL is just broken as ususal. Of course, if they send you inventory, then the jig is up. _____________________

There are only two full proof ways - use an alt or do not sign in. _____________________

If you want to prevent interruptions while you're building, you could always get OpenSim and build on your local machine instead.
Of course, you'd then require Second Inventory to transfer your stuff across to the main grid, and that costs money (although it's well worth it). _____________________

okay, why would one decide not to be on their puter alone and decide to log on a MMO and not let anyone know? if its really that much of a concern disconnect your modem, get an alt or just go outside and play hide n seek

okay, why would one decide not to be on their puter alone and decide to log on a MMO and not let anyone know? I understand why content creators would want to do it...all those interruptions must be a pain. Plus, what if the OP actually wanted to be alone with just a certain person or persons and hide from everyone else, rather than alone ALONE? Ok dead horse... beaten.. etc.. We can stop on this now. Thanks. lol, statements like that are the best way to keep threads alive on this forum. _____________________

It is pretty sad you can easily hide from everyone on say .. Yahoo Messenger
Or even ICQ back in 1999 .. But in SL, the chat program of the future(tm) .. you cant. |

Really just create an alt. Make it obvious and don’t accept or keep friends.
I mean look at me. No friends. Over a year now and still the same f**king noob clothes and hair. But hey Mr. “I don’t want to be bothered so I’ll log in as wALT” is happy and that makes me happy. :vomit: |

Yes, yes these are all great workarounds but all have issues also. Beta grid just isn't SL, paying thousands of L$ for a program just to transfer stuff from there to the main grid is major overkill for the want of a true privacy control. Also same with an alt, there are ownership issues of stuff you build, some inventory cannot be shared. Some private moments are not about building at all and so you might want to be dress decently and/or as your main any way.
The point being these overkill solutions would not be needed if LL would just put a true privacy button in place. It is entirely possible to do but they do not do it. Probably for the same reason they *have* to call the Friends List just that instead of Contacts like an email or IM program would. Imagine the reduced dramas that would result if people were on a Contact list instead of on a FL. If you don't think so then ask yourself why a lot of people think you are only their friend if they are on your FL and can see exactly when you are around all the time and cry blue murder if you dare remove them. When I wake on a morning I don't immediately ring up all my friends to tell them I woke up and then do likewise to tell them I am about to go to sleep so why should I announce it every time I log in or out in SL?. It is silliness, not even my closest friends need to know that I am online every single time I log in or out. |

Creating an alt to build would soon produce the same disturbance problems as building on your main. When products began to appear in your shop with your alt as the creator your friends would soon figure out that was your alt and contact you again, or feel hurt you hadn't informed them of you had an alt. Likewise you cannot create an alt to spend quiet time alone with your partner/special person etc , that has to be your main.

Main:
Ive created an alt just to partner with. Even got the same last names. Very cute. But true it’s the mains that have all the inventory and all the prestige and all the cool stuff that mains gather over the years. What would be nice is if we could select everyone on our Friends list at once and not be limited to just 20 at a time. With close to 300 ppl on my FL I just stopped turning off the eye and let the IMs fly. wALT: Are you done? Main: Yes. |
