There's also the problem that in a lot of places you just don't have "public" property streets or something similar, but just parcels next to each other, so you HAVE to step on somebody's land if you don't want to keep flying or tp'ing around...

Exactly right.

And lest anybody come away from this discussion with the notion that restricted access lines represent some noble exercise of property rights: The property holder has every right to use them, and by doing so will antagonize all neighbors and advertise his antisocial tendencies to every passerby. It's an extraordinarily effective way to make oneself look both clueless (god forbid my pixels should intermingle with yours, when my cam can go anywhere) and suspect (must be something evil lurking behind that razorwire!)

I won't use banlines myself, they are an eyesore. People can walk across my land, hang out and enjoy the view if they want, I don't care. I like to fly and wander so I appreciate the freedom, but also respect people's property. I'd never enter someones home uninvited, even if a door was unlocked. But in the end I do believe in the property owner's right to do as they wish in regards to access.

Ain't no such thing as 'privacy' in the metaverse. Banlines and doors at best only offer the illusion of privacy.

Sometimes you have to stand on principle, and the right of the property owner to use these lines is a right worth defending. Neighbors can be added to the access list. And if a no trespassing sign would work it would be used. But since it would be ignored, it is not clueless or suspect to use banlines.

All things in the metaverse are an illusion, it is what we are paying for.

Basically, we pay for disk space on a server. In SL, that space is defined in square meters instead of megabytes. Land is a 3D website.

Fine, then it is disk space under the control of the person paying for it. If they choose not to allow access to it, they are exercising their right.

Ghehehe - your vigorous defense makes me wonder what you're up to, behind those ban lines.

There are plenty of Websites out there that restrict access to parts or all of them.

But it certainly *looks* clueless and suspect. Of course, as a property owner, I'd have the right to do it, but I have the right do do all manner of mindless things to annoy and inconvenience other residents. Standing on principle for the right to look silly is... silly.

Can we keep things on topic, this isn't the forum for discussing the politics and ethics of ban lines.

Nina don't let Chris bait you. Chris, quit baiting Nina.

It'd be nice if the ban lines would automatically turn off when nobody on the access list is even present.

I put up a huge concrete wall with barbed wire on the top and "ban lines suck" graffiti scrawled all over it, next to my neighbor's ban lines. I received an IM from him explaining that he can't take down his ban lines because he doesn't want newbs from the nearby info hub on his property. So, for the 23 hours per day he isn't present I have red lettering hovering over my property, and if I should make a navigation error while boating and hit his ban lines, which is inevitable with high lag, I am launched into the next sim, sans boat. The irony? The sucker loves boating, but denies me the use of my water craft.

And, in this sim with lots of newbies learning the ropes, flying is rewarded with invisible barriers and "stay the hell off my lawn" popups.
