I think this stands a good chance - especially as LL suggests in the announcement that SLE is a response to demand. One thing that will be vital with these standalone mini-grids is that they are reliable.

But for me, I'll just stick with making attempts to get an OpenSim region up and running every now and then!!!

Yeah, well, they also said zindra was in response to demand..

It looks like cool stuff but US$55K is a bit too steep. They're talking about something that can put support up to 800 people at once in there at the starting point - this is definitely targeted at large enterprises.

I hope they come out with something that's geared more towards small/medium businesses, too. More of a starter setup that allows, say, a max of 150-200 or so..

Not sure why you say it'll be more stable. Except for the network, it sounds like the same product, complete with the same problems.

Business-Friendly Mainland

One other important thing to note: The Enterprise Team is not just working on SL Enterprise and the SL Work Marketplace. We’re also hard at work making improvements to the main Second Life environment—to make it easier to use and useful for organizations using Second Life today and for those that will be joining in the future. We’ll have more to share on some of those improvements in the coming months.

This is why they took away all former freedom from Mature mainland.

And no, they wanted not to create a PG area/continent for the army of suits/organisations which they're now hallucinating at horizon.

They wanted to *ruin* the freedom aspects of Mature mainland and to *move* the adult biz to Zindra at the same time, to make the scenery "clean" and to establish a deep cut and disconnection between both zones.

I would not expect that the new grey target group which is invited *to join* in the future and to flood the former mainland and mature mainland will buy anything on Zindra, or throwing big parties, or using thrilling items and developements on the old mainland.

They also wouldn't buy land on Zindra. They will ignore it totaly.

From my view this is the next killing step for both zones (Mature and Adult)

Or would anyone expect that the new "organisations" want to meet the creative lifestyles which remained so far on Mature land or the thrilling lifestyles on Zindra?

As soon the mainland is flooded with suits and "organisations", the fun is definitely over, even behind walls or in sky boxes.

I think, the mainland will become a big classroom and advertising zone.

They are starting a new project phase for the mainland...*this* sounds *so* like March 09 where all the mess started.

It will be fun for them, since they learned very well along the phase 1 how easy it is to break any sort of protest into pieces. And they learned that they need only one single employee to do this easy and without sweat.

So, this seems to be the mysterious phase 2 or 3, they mentioned along some of the brownbags while the "Ursula/Zindra"-project was "discussed".

LOL. I would not wonder if they establish a dress code for the mainland and making wearing suits an obligation.

$55,000.00 could very well be a "retail price" that gets negotiated down in individual circumstances. I am sure that Linden Lab, at least for now, is probably willing to slash prices just to build up a portfolio of company names to be satisfied customers. Linden Lab doesn't have too many high-profile satisfied customers right now, does it?

It sounds like a mini main grid but... I'm having some conceptual issues here.

1) C/M/T permissions... would they be turned on? And even if they are... do they really matter insofar as a third party is operating its own grid?

2) Money. Maybe a classroom or corporation won't need money. Will $L and LindeX service be tied in, or not? I'm guessing not. And if so... well... no way to buy items from content creators. Unless you buy them on this grid and have some sort of export permissiony thingie. But once on another grid... see 1)

3) Eventually, once you make something Here, and then another thing Over There, there's gonna be money in Going from There to Here. I wonder how that will sort out?

I have a really hard time with "Nebraska" and "new Enterprise" anything being used together.

Has anyone at LL actually been to Nebraska?

Maybe that's why it's a code name...no one would even think of Nebraska. :D

More like with a 55K pricetag the place will look a lot like Nebraska...flat, dull, full of tumbleweeds.

What's the difference between Iowa and Nebraska anyway? I don't even understand why they bothered carving out dinky little parcels of land and calling them separate states. By the time they were moving west that fast they might as well have left it all Louisiana and California.

They are also providing a new Marketplace for these SLE2 customers, with ready-made regions for conferences, exhibitions, training, marketing etc, plus a whole host of business and work-related avatars.

The 8 regions can support 800 avatars, and it is not just standalone software you get for the US$55K, you get two enterprise edition servers too. There are also US$14K of annual license fees to pay. More info here:

What's an "enterprise edition server"? Does this mean you get the hardware along with the software?

You also mention in your blog that "...as it does not have to stream all the content that LL normally streams for Second Life, it is blazingly fast." Eh? What's the new stuff not streaming? Like, how is this, bandwidth-wise, different than having a mini-continent of 8 regions?

edit: and 8 regions in SL can, in theory, support 800 people too. Ever been on a region that's got 100 people on it before? I have. Unless this new stuff is 10x as fast as an SL sim, minimum, this 800 number sounds like pure marketing.

That's why that whole section of the country is called "flyover states." ;)

There will be a new marketplace, apparently you can import a sim and take the content, this will be real money deals.

Instead of Linden dollars they're talking about awarding employees points for good work.

 Ahem. Evidently you know nothing of college football.

The "Nebraska" codename is an obvious euphemism for "Cornhusker"--which follows naturally from The Corn Field, but is a little too evocative of Adult Content for public use.

Same servers as we have now - 4 sims per server but only your own enterprise sims on them. And probably up to date hardware, so faster.

Rock? Where did you find the info on that US$14K annual license fee? I can't seem to fond that anywhere in the official press releases or Blogs or FAQs.

That is roughly half what the tier would be on eight class 5 sims on the main grid. But since initial setup is more, it will take several years to break even.

But I thought SLE had 8 regions online at once and one of the two boxen was just for voice.

Then I don't know. It just seemed logical from reading here that 8 sims and 2 servers is what happens now with 4 sims per server.

It's typical LL then. Stuff as much as you can into one box, and hope it doesn't get overused.
