I received this message today from one of the groups I'm in. Said group is having a party to synch with the following....

From: someone
Mark Kingdon, CEO of Linden Labs, who will be introducing their new Enterprise platform, code-named Nebraska.
Future of the Enterprise: Special Event Live from San Francisco
Metanomics is proudly hosting a mixed-reality event during the Enterprise 2.0 conference in San Francisco on November 4, 2009. The event will take place from 11am PST to 12pm PST.

Has anyone heard of this new platform that even has a "code name?" Is this a new viewer? I'm confuzled but it looks all official.

It is called Nebraska, and is in essence a walled in corporate park. The coprps can have their meetings and such in a secure, in SL terms anyway, environment. You can have an avatar with your RL name there for business use.

I hear you can add text to a prim there, I wonder if us commoners will see that.

There's a bit about it on Virtual World News. It seems there are going to be two behind-the-firewall products - Second Life Enterprise and Second Life Marketplace. Prices look to be beyond the scope of private ordinary residents. Interesting, though.

It will probably be something we end up getting from the Emerald viewer before we get it from LL..

I have a really hard time with "Nebraska" and "new Enterprise" anything being used together.

Has anyone at LL actually been to Nebraska?

It seems cheap really considering the alternative of paying tier on 8 regions:

8 regions = 8 x $1,000 = $8,000
1st year tier = 8 x $295/month x 11 = $25,960
2nd year and on = 8 x $295/month x 12 = $28,320

Cost after 2 years: $62,280

And "SL Enterprise" comes with a whole bag of extra perks and bells and whistles.

(Although I imagine that LL would likely add a recurring maintenance fee for support and updates even though it isn't mentioned)

A little correction: the "purchase" of a full prim region is "only" $1,000, not $1,250.

But when you buy regions on the main grid, you're also paying for LLs network and back-end servers and colo fees and all that stuff..

Yes, maybe it just seems like a bigger number than it really is but I think they have, right out of the gate, priced themselves well outside most companies comfort zone. I would have thought that a smaller product, something in the US$15k range, would get them a lot more interest.

I guess I was thinking about this stuff not as "zomg! all of SL inside the firewall!!" but more of a product aimed towards competing with opensim. They are clearly not trying to compete with opensim with a price *starting at* $50k.

Well, LL is as much interested in little companies as it is interested in little users: close to not at all. Their targets are the big players - I guess because they think of themselfs as big player, too. Us little guys are good for creating nice numbers on the spreadsheets they show to the big players when they try to sell them SL as the place to go.

I always have a little grin when I read "mixed-reality event", picturing an event at which more than two realities exist.

Deck Out your Workspace with Content

What about content, you ask? Great question. There are three ways to create or bring new content into the SL Enterprise environment. First, the solution has the same rich LSL building tools as Second Life so creating new content within the solution is easy. Second, if you own the intellectual property rights in content you created in Second Life, then you can transfer that content into the SL Enterprise environment. Now, you’ll need to affirm your IP ownership prior to moving any content—you must identify the Second Life names of your employees who created content for you, and if you wish to transfer any content created by a Resident who is not your employee, you must provide Linden Lab with a signed written permission from that Resident content creator.
I was wondering how they were going to handle this. This means this product is not part of the Second Life Service under the ToS.

Edit: On the comparison page they list "Customizable Avatars" as something available in SLE but not SL. What does this mean?

Well, for one thing, you can use your real name for an SLE Avatar. No silly requirement to pick from a list of pre-made surnames.

Yes, but they list that as a separate bullet point, so that's not it.

They're not very clear on how far permission is going to have to extend though.

Ie: an office chair
* textures were created by a different resident
* animations were created by another resident
* sculptmaps were created by yet another resident

Most of the IP that matters belongs to residents other than the creator of the chair who merely has a specific and limited usage license to the basic building blocks those three created.

If LL is exporting content based solely on the yes/no by the creator of the chair then I would think that what gets imported is infringing in this case (unless all three other creators explicitly permitted export).

...AND making sure all prims have the same creator. Doesn't a basic item that's modifyable take on the creator name of the person that created the root prim?

It sounds like the creator will have to asset positively that they own the rights. If they're fibbing to LL about that it's on them.

Well I wouldn't describe it as cheap, they don't host if for you for a start. They're vague about the support details, they're vague about the server specs. 55K for a beta product doesn't scream value at me.
