How about Simon Cowell... why does *anybody* care what that fellow thinks? wait... you mean someone does!? (except of course the people on stage in front of him. mickey mouse could be sitting in that chair and they would care... but only because they rely on it to move forward) _____________________

I manage to simultaneously win and lose by my own criteria all the time! When I joined SL in 2005 I really didn't have much of a clue. I knew nothing about the fact that you could create content, make money or do t3h s3xx0rz or whatever. All I had to go on was an advert I'd seen somewhere on the internet in 2004 that showed a guy playing a Flying-V (I happen to own & use one daily in RL) in front of a crowd and thinking at the time that it would be a novel way to reach an audience. Due to circumstances beyond my control I had to wait until 2005 before I could take the plunge.
With hindsight I realise that what I was really looking for at the time was a NinJam enabled link-up with other musicians across the internet to perform shows in SL. Which is what Virtual Live Band do and something I still haven't done to this day. Fail #1. Within a few days I realised that wasn't going to happen and just got into exploring the grid and generally mooching around. A few months while later an opportunity at community building pretty much fell into my lap and I got into it in a big way. I had the vision thing, etc.,etc., and knew where I wanted it to go. Win #1. Aforementioned success drew the attention of people who saw what I was doing as competition and a threat to their game/business plan. Said people set about to systematically undermine my efforts. They won, I lost. Fail #2. Mid-2006 and Slim Warrior pesters me into doing a show at her place in Menorca. I hadn't done much for several years so it provided me with the incentive to revisit alot of my earlier work and knock it into shape in order to perform it. Although the attendance was low (a consistent "feature" of all my shows in SL to this day... another definite 'Fail') it got me motivated to write, record, practise and perform more material. So much so that I have written and recorded 4 albums since then. I completed 2 albums last year and am on course to do the same this year. Mega Win #2. Laughably low turnout for my performances in SL. Definite Fail #3. I built up a small business selling treehouses and other prefabs which was moderately successful for a few years. So much so that not only was I able to tier up to half a sim and finance my poorly-attended performances but also to be able to cash out money that was sorely needed to pay for upkeep/repairs of my instruments and equipment, pay for new software (Cubase, Kontakt, etc.) and even a laptop which I used at Glastonbury festival to run the backing tracks for my performance there. Win #3. Another unexpected bonus of my experiences in SL was learning 3D construction. I had attempted to grapple with VRML as even back in 1995/1996 I could see that 3D web rather than flatweb was the real future way back then but just couldn't get the hang of it. One really satisfying benefit was the ability to build up stages and environment venues for my music performances.... indulging my Roger Dean-ish wannabe fantasies Win #4.Said business hit the skids in an epic way in mid 2008. My music shows had pretty much always run at a loss. By the end of 2009 along with the changes in tier and status of open space sims, and my collapse of earnings I was looking at the end of my pleasant tenancy of the half-sim that I rented. Fail #4. So, all in all, a collection of personal epic fails and wins. In the balance I'd have to say that I win in that I've beaten the massive creative block and depression I was going through at the time I joined SL. I've met alot of very creative and talented people and made some very good friends here. My creative output productivity rate has shot through the roof and I feel good to roll for years to come in spite of my lifetime epic fail of never making enough money from my endeavours so as to be able to crush the 'get-a-job-you-loser' croaking toads under my heel. _____________________

My goals here have changed .I have for over 18 months made tier +.I like to double it and have succeeded so far .This has up to recently been my win.Now ,for me, It's about getting my family to understand what I am doing and not shout at me with derision.
Now that would be a real win. _____________________

Winning
08-01-2009 07:37
I came to play SL with a Big Brother Fan Club of around 40 others..all of us were assorted ages and mainly all women. After one of our club members told us all about getting free cars, planes and a SL Big Brother contest here... we all poured in, either one by one or in groups. The migration started in December of 06 and there could have been a Sitcom built around us...we were such gaming newbs! The first of our settlers found us a nice modern building.. called the "Lofts" that we all moved into ...without knowing how to even put on a pair of shoes with a base yet! We had weekly showings of the previous season's Big Brother shows and we met tons of new people ...some are still wonderful friends to this day.
Most of us bypassed going through help Island..as soon as our Avie's were created we were TP'd directly to the Lofts. We must have raised the economy of SL by a good 25% that year...first discovering every hair place in SL, then moving on to clothes and shoes...and finally decorating our lofts! Our landlord at the time alternated between celebrating having all his apts rented (he even had to build a new building) and tearing out his prim hair...having to come to our rescue at all hours of the day and night! Our adventures that first year would take a book to fill...but needless to say...most of us got totally hooked on SL and are still here. The same person that brought us in SL somehow found out about Relay for Life in Second life....rallied the troops and I found myself as a Captain of a RFL Team. Still total newbs..we learned everything the hard way...how to upload a texture for a poster, how to find carnival rides for events and figure out how they worked so avie's did not go sideways or upside down...how to organize a garage sale. I had lost my mother to cancer not long before and my best friend in RL found out she had breast cancer. I was still hurting from my mother’s death, very angry that I had lost her and was scared to death for my friend. I will never forget sitting next to the road in front of our team campsite and cheering on the Survivors and Caregivers that first year...and then the Luminaria Ceremony where every one of us had family or friend’s names and tributes called out whom had died or was suffering from cancer. As a group...at times we laughed till we dropped, we cried buckets, we shared our memories ...and I was finally able to let go of my hurt and anger. I learned to savor all the special memories of my mother that come at random times and to be there for my friend... in ways I never thought I'd have the courage to. I sat with her when they shaved her head..she was so brave and I held on to my tears for her sake...then went home and cried buckets afterward. She has been clean of cancer for two years now although I lost another good friend in that time...the mother of 2 small children ![]() Most of the group is now scattered all over SL...many are still friends and many are not. Three in our group are still my very best friends in SL and RL. Many have taken on different roles in RFL, belong to different teams and some just go to the assorted events to lend their support. Some have Sl married or partnered...some have found other passions, many have business's of their own...and some still just love to shop ![]() But during the Big Brother season...you will find groups of us huddled together all over SL during an Endurance Competition...watching and chatting in the Big Brother Group most of us still belong to today.... while the SL world revolves around us. We certainly have won many battles as a group and individually and we have lost many also. But no matter what..through all the ups and downs, the lost friends and the new ones...I definitely feel like a winner ![]() _____________________

I posted it because I thought it was amusing. I'll remove it if it's offensive to anyone. Probably, because the forums are supposed to be SFW, even the url link should have had some warning, but FWIW, I don't think it's a big deal, personally--especially now that we've all been scarred for life. ![]() |

Even in a metaphorical sense, I don't see any winning. I'm in SL to enjoy myself. I don't create anything, and I have no interest in land. If I am having a good time and not doing so at the expense of others, then that is enough for me.
Unless I am in a honeybee gunfight with Charlemagne Allen. Then I win when she crumples like a paper cup and begs for mercy. /evil laugh |

I think the img-tagged picture in the quoted post is offensive to pretty much everyone--but it was url-tagged in your post, so you can't really fix it anyway. Probably, because the forums are supposed to be SFW, even the url link should have had some warning, but FWIW, I don't think it's a big deal, personally--especially now that we've all been scarred for life. ![]() I thought he was adorable. ![]() A heads-up: I spend quite a bit of time in SL myself, so if anything, it's self-deprecating humor. Silly post, not anything else. |

I Don't get why Ephraim changed it to img tags when the Original picture poster had it behind broken URL tags. For convenient linking. Apologies, folks. I thought I was perpetrating a joke. I didn't think anyone would seriously take me at my word or actually find the image offensive. I thought it was a riot, it's so off-the-wall and ridiculous. Anyway, I've edited the img tags back to boring ole urls. |

Thank you for sharing your story, and that of your friends. It is stories like these that make a win for me. I have a smile on my face as I leave the computer, and a warmed heart; what else can be better.
