Winning Second Life ~ what's your criteria 4TW?

This is a bit out of left field, having to do with some conversations I've had with friends lately, that won't be named.

Yah yah there's that old "it's not a game" argument. Whatever. I don't care, hit "Post New Thread" and argue that one 'till blue in the face. But for those with juuuuuust enough hardcore gamer mentality within them to feel it...

...what's 'winning' for you, here?

Ironically this came up with regard to a discussion about failure, of all things.

All of us fail in one way or another due to personal flaws, happenstance, or just plain bad luck.

Critically acclaimed artists can feel like failures, even if loved by the Great Unwashed Masses. Other seemingly successful types simply don't find having done X or Y or Z all that rewarding, e.g.: "I really wanted to be a novelist, not the best dry cleaner on the East Side!"

But failure is common enough, and perhaps best viewed through the lens of its antithetical concept: victory.

* * * * *

Could it be finding the love of your life here and marrying them (I know of a few who have done that, even had a child since).

Could it be being the best _____er on the grid (e.g. dressmaker, event organiser, builder &c &c)

Could it be possession of all the grid squares on the map? (your move!)

Could it be something to do with fame? Or infamy?

Could it be an $L balance?

Could it be getting by *without* an $L balance?

Could it be a conquest of some sort? (PLEASE self~moderate a bit if it's this one)

Could it be being 'right' about something?

Could it be self discovery?

Could it be changing the grid forever in some way?

Could it be logging out forever, having learned something priceless about oneself or others?

Can it be achieved by negative actions; say, griefing?

Can it be won by defeating the final Boss of the highest level?

* * * * *

What I wanna know, is how you win the game.

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

Earning an income equivalent to a good fulltime RL job. I'm aiming for about $50000/year, but have a long way to go.

Chris: brilliantly clear. Good... luck? grin

Damien: As ah, personally unfortunate as step one sounds from Victoria City, I was sort of reaching for what you considered to be the 'ultimate win.' It sounds like your first goal is but a mere milestone on the way to greater things.

Ayesha, I have no doubt that you will achieve that, and a whole lot more. Good luck!

I just came here to have fun. And mostly I do. I also learned a few new things. So I guess it is already a win.

In order of importance:

1. To enjoy myself.
2. To meet new people.
3. To learn new things.
4. To make lots of nice animations.
5. To cover the cost of my Second Life from my in world business.

Anything more is a bonus. :)

To be suffcinetly entertained when I log on each time. That is all I am looking for. The self discovery one is probably applicable, although that was not an original intent.

Oh, and to own as many pairs of shoes as I possibly can.

For me, SL is a creative outlet and a means of entertainment. While it is not a "winning criteria" (I don't "play to win";), I would say that it's building trust, gaining respect, and earning friendships that matter to me in SL.

I come here as a part-time job....but the other night I got to hear the voice and have a real conversation with someone that I have absolutely adored for 2 and a half years. One simple real conversation, when you can finally hear an amazing laugh....instead of seeing LOL.

Absolute Win. Priceless. No amount of business success will ever replace that.

It wasn't even a "criteria"....just a surprise. Never know when you're going to have one of those moments that puts your "criteria" to shame.

I can't even beat Pony Linden. Phillip would totally kick my butt.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Oh such well rounded, emotionally mature people!

Sounds like you are all winners, and I mean that in a sort of unchallenging sense. It's almost not fair. These goals are attainable!

Who is intentionally playing SL on the 'difficult' setting? I hear it is under Preferences...

This might qualify... you've really set yourself up for a challenge, haven't you! Daring and difficult!

I don't see that. It must be under the FIC options.

I can't take all the credit for this... but... I suppose I could count eliminating hearing that annoying "Carbon Rod: ALL GO" (and variants) all over the grid, by supplanting X-Flight. Some people still use it, but you hardly ever hear it any more.

And that's a game everyone wins.

Just having a good time and learning to do things - like build and make textures.

It's been my aim to make enough L$ to cover my SL costs - that's not the case at the moment although it was for a while some time ago.

I'd consider it a modest victory if I could educate at least one new person that criteria took the plural form of a verb. :p

Pep ('Criterion' on the other hand, is singular. :D )

I actually *knew* that, and botched the thread title.

"are" -vs- "is" ~ I didn't expect too many people to have a singular goal. Though, you did!

Ding ding ding!

Congratulations Pep, you have Just Won Second Life!

*cheesy music plays, lights flash and Vanna White poses smilingly*

As such, I am off to see if I can modify the thread title.

(Edit: Edited! "are" inserted where "is" was... the regular "is", not the "is" as defined by the first edition District of Columbia Clintonian dictionary)

Hummm...

To be sufficently successful in my business endeavors in SL that I can always cover my in-world and Land expenses with what I earn in-world. By that measure, I have been "Winning" most of the 3+ years I have been in SL. But the recent down-turn in the economy is making it more and more likely that I'll "lose a round" here or there some time soon, and have to cover part of my land costs out of pocket.

To be successful enough in my roleplayed personal relationships in SL that everyone enjoys the roleplay interactions, those that want to stay together do so, those that wish to part do so amicably, and no one has their RL relationships harmed by what happens in-world. Winnng so far by that measure, with no losses in sight.

Long term Mega-win: To be successful enough to own one or more sims for my own use, paid for entirely by my business endeavors in SL. I'm nowhere close to that win yet. About a quarter of the way through the game, for that goal, and still seeking the path to the big treasure trove of commissions and product designs that will pay for it!

Next on the list is to find out why annna can change the thread title that appears on the index page but others can't seem to. ;)

Pep (Perhaps I should start a thread and then see if I can change it completely and really mess people up. )

When I first came inworld I was in a WA and someone asked that question. One of the old timers there replied with "whoever has the most happiness wins"

Shoes, friends, adventures or self sufficiency, I don't think it matters as long as it contributes to that goal and isn't at the expense of any one else.

So I'm voting for that.

That is an awesome answer! Mind if I borrow that one? I'll file off the serial number and everything.
