Hope you all don't mind this question but something very odd happened to me at the weekend, see if anyone has had the same experience and how did they deal with it..here is what happened..

I have been talking and hanging out with a male friend, he says he is male and his AV was male, for a few weeks..Then on Saturday he quite suddenly tp'ed in to where we usually meet and his AV had changed to a very pretty female, when I spoke to him in local chat and also IM he totally ignored me...I respect that people have the option to change the gender of their AV as to suit whatever roleplay they want, but this guy had never expressed any such thought..It was quite a shock to see this female AV with the same profile name as my male drinking buddy...It was a very strange feeling, guess I now understand what RL people feel like when their good male drinking buddy, suddenly turns up in a revealing dress and stockings...

You’ve been in SL for almost a year and this shocks you?
Odd that they ignored you though. Are you sure…really really sure it was the same account name? If it was the same person and they are ignoring you then that’s sad.
As far as the gender bender thing ….. pffft

The gender thing doesn't bother me (not that any of it is my business of course) if the person is fulfilling what their dream is- whether because of orientation or just for the hell of it- as I sd, not my business. What does bother the crap out of me is when it is done to scam someone- to play a joke on them.

I knew a guy who did it and seduced a girl who thought he was a she- really pissed me off cause he was a straight man and he took advantage of that girl. Knew a guy that did it just as a joke to me- he didn't mean any harm by it but still pissed me off. Had a girl try to pick me up once- when I told friends about it they all thought she was a he based on some of the interactions- aggravating.

I just take avatars at face value but what does sometimes spook me a bit is when they morph from one thing to another right in fromt of me while I'm chatting

Sometimes I make my avatar into a very feminine woman in a fancy ballgown - with a big prim beard. I like the juxtaposition.

Heh... You'd love me then... I folder a lot of my looks and go from 4'tall to 6'tall in a split second. I even toggle in and out of tiny avatars on the fly. (^_^)y

I have two avatars of opposite genders (and a couple of non-humans, so they're not important here) under the same account. I don't see why people gets so bothered with transgendering (http://metaverse.acidzen.org/2007/is-playing-opposite-sex-really-a-sin). That's a possibility in this world just as flying is. There are so many reasons why one could want to try a different shape, many of them are actually not related to sex.

What is really ugly in RandyChris' story is being ignored because buddy changed shape for a night. I mean, whatever one do is fine, but it's not a reason to become impolite.

And, I agree with Conifer, changing shape (this is not just transgender thing) can be an ugly thing to see. Warn people around before you do that or retreat to secluded place.

I'm a bloke in RL and Metal is a bloke but sometimes I change into a woman when I'm building. I seem to get less grief for some reason when I'm a woman. Maybe its just me.

The only time I morph is for fun. I am and always have lived as a human female, and I never change my body. I do however change hair - color and style, and eyes, and of course skin, but always the same color tone. :-P I do like the idea of changing into something when I'm building. I ususally just dance. :-D

Yes absolutely sure it was the same account name, mainly because he is on my friends list and we were hanging out at the place we first met, also at that time his name was the only male av on my friends list that was online...I was chatting to him in the week and he was a normal male...Like I said, I have no problem with the gender swap thing, but it was quite surprising when he totally ignored me even though he/she was stood right next to me, and I commented on how good his new look was...
Still no great loss, I am sure they found other chat more stimulating...

I suppose there is no possibility that either his account could have been hacked and someone is messing around with his avatar, or - as Alicia suggested - one of his family members is playing a little joke on him? The LM for your regular meeting place would likely be in his LM list, possibly at the top, and if anyone but your friend was 'driving' the av, they might have ignored you because if they replied you might have suspected something was up?

Try sending him an offline IM asking if he has a female incarnation on that account, and if he was ignoring you deliberately when you saw him (as her) the other day. An offline IM would go to his email address; he might not even realise if someone's been messing with his account until he logs and finds out he's suddenly had a sex change :D

No. You like the feeling of the beard tickling your boobs.

the gender thing doesn't bother me, RL or SL

I know some avatars in SL that are the opposite gender in RL, and I know some that cross dress

meh they are people, what do I care what they want to wear in SL or RL

I thought I remembered you. This problem seems to trouble you a lot.

NNNNNNNNNNNNNOoooooooooooooooo no problem... I just could not understand why I was ignored, thats all...So I was told, he is a male account and a male AV... I got drinking with him as a male Av.. then all of a sudden he tp's in as a very pretty female...As I explained earlier, I can understand and respect that people may want to gender change at some point in their SL life...But if you do gender change, why should you ignore the friends you made before you changed gender...

Changing sex ??

If I put on a male shirt, necktie & trousers I am fashionable , but still look like a girl (I hope). What would happen if I clicked the 'male' button in 'Appearance' ? would I suddenly grow a beard ? (smiles) , or something worse ??

You'd change shape to the male equivalent of the slider settings you have. You might gain a bit of stubble, too. Male avs have a ken-doll bulge but nothing more defined than that, unless you add a primnis.

Avatar Name

Check closely the name/profile

you can have the same name registered just
by capitalizing one or all the letters

eg. john Smith, John Smith Or JOHN Smith

Can be 3 different avatars acording to the SL sign up page.

when I created my alt, the name was taken, even when I
couldn't find it in search.
Capitalized it ...no problem.

But surely the name would have to be exact, as to show up on my friends list...This guy showed online and rezzed in as a very pretty girl... and stood next to me for about 5 minutes... His name above the AV was EXACTLY the same spelling as the profile name on my friends list..I spoke in room and also IM, using the options above the AV's head and also from my friends list...The IM box showed that I had already spoken...
I know about getting spelling of profile names right, because when I had the rat-trap put into the skybox, I had to correct the spelling of my SL fiancee...
