Hi there, Having been on SL for some time, and having read all the comments that "most female AV's on SL are male."
I have this thought in my head...
If a male person in RL makes a female AV in SL, does this mean that the male person in RL is a closet gay or a crossdresser???

I have only once worn my fiancee's panties, and she lost her anal virginity by daring me to do it...

Would be interested on your thoughts...

Thanks for sharing, but that was waaaaaay the hell TMI.

While I do know a few guys that play female avatars, the majority of the women I know in SL are women in RL, including my wife.

I doubt that "most" female avatars are operated by males, since there \is a large proportion of actual female Residents, whatever their avatar may be. I'd bet, though, that "most" of the very promiscuous ones are operated by males, particularly the "escorts."

Not at all. One thing is not related to the other. I've met many straight married cross-dressers who have never been interested in another male. IMO, male cross-dressing is akin to women who would never wear a skirt or dress, just a preference and/or fetish. Regarding SL, I treat it the way it is, a fantasy world where anyone can be anything.

I see absolutely no reason why a straight male can't be perfectly comfortable using a female av. I use one myself quite often. It isn't meant to represent some repressed aspect of my personality or sexuality. I simply find it nicer to look at. It seems pretty myopic to think that a male can't play a female character without being some kind of closet homosexual or crossdresser, and makes no more sense than saying that a male novelist couldn't write a first person female character without being gay. I'd hazard a guess that a guy who couldn't use a female av at all for fear of what others might think is more likely to be insecure about their sexuality than a guy who can use one without any such concerns.

Now...I know that some people might see this as a troll effort, which it may be.. but I don't care. I feel like answering it seriously. So I shall :D

I don't think that sexuality in any way normally ties directly to av gender. Sometimes, sure, a male may play a female because they 'like to feel sexy' as a girl, or want to be able to hit on guys without being thought of as gay, but normally it's for some other reason, or maybe just because they feel like it at the time.

Along with this, most of the female avs I know are either female in RL or M2F transgendered, which in my mind associates them as female in RL as well. Those few 'imposters' are straight men, who just felt like playing a girl, just like how it happens in many games where the option is there.

I also think you'll agree that female av's have more going for them. A wider variety of good shapes, skins, clothes, hair, etc. I see way too many men with long straight hair (I hate that honestly) and have to think to myself 'Is that all that was available?' In a society where looking good seems to be a plus, I can see the temptation to be female, where looking good is easier. (My opinion. I see faaar more good looking females than males in SL)

So...there's my two cents.

I don't know. I based my prediction of its eventual demise on its beginning.

This one was so bad, it's possible that the thread might implode, creating a black hole so powerful it consumes the entire western united states.

Hi there, Having been on SL for some time, and having read all the comments that "most female AV's on SL are male."
I have this thought in my head...
If a male person in RL makes a female AV in SL, does this mean that the male person in RL is a closet gay or a crossdresser???

First, you might be surprised at how many SL female avatars are actually played by RL women. I have no doubt that RL men play as many as half or more of the female avatars. (Someone should do a survey.) But don't just assume that Second Life is a men's club.

Second, people's sexual identities are complex things. Television, movies, comedians, and politicians like us to think you can easily lump perfectly into categories. The fact of the matter is, it doesn't work like that.

Third, I don't think sexual expression is necessarily the most salient thing to every SL resident.

I have no doubt that there are RL men and women with thoughts of crossdressing who may play out such fantasies in SL life. Some crossdressers are gay; some crossdressers have homosexual thoughts; some are quite heterosexual.

I would be surprised that a lot of gay men are playing female avatars for the purpose of virtual sex with male avatars. Most gay men really aren't turned on by watching heterosexual sex. That's why they are gay men. (Same would be true for gay women; I doubt many gay women would be playing men so they can watch virtual heterosexual sex.)

There are enough gay men (male avatars who profess to be gay) in Second Life that a gay man can easily play a gay male avatar and find other gay male avatars for their sexual fantasies.

Real life, heterosexual, male-dressing men I have known have given me a couple of reasons why they have liked to play female characters in MMORPGs. One, since they are creating a character, rather than a representation of their real selves, they follow their creative instincts. Second, they'll be staring at their own character all the time on-screen, so why not make that character attractive. (My favorite explanation; that sounds honest.)

Of course, the MMORPG players I've known in real life don't use the MMORPGs for virtual sex (at least not that they have ever admitted to me).

I've had virtual friends on MUSHes who have played female characters, told me they were real life men, and explain to me that they just wanted to see what it's like to be a woman.

Then finally, I would take a guess that many of the real life men who play female avatars in Second Life are also playing SL lesbians. So, if they have virtual sex, they are watching the same woman-on-woman action that heterosexual men routinely enjoy in pornograpy.

By the way, here are two of the non-roleplaying reasons that real life women sometimes portray virtual men. First, it cuts down on a lot of unwanted attention and harassment. Second, sadly, many women find they are taken more seriously intellectually if they appear to be a man rather than a woman.

If you are a real life man who enjoys playing a virtual woman, I don't think it's necessarily time to start doubting your entire real life sexual identity. It doesn't mean you are a closet homosexual in real life, if you have never had sexual feelings for a man in real life. Even if you do have occasional homosexual thoughts in real life, that doesn't even mean that you are gay. What determines your real life sexual identity is how you behave, and how happy you are with your behavior.

No. It means they're a male person in RL who made a female AV in SL. That is all.

They may well be homosexual or transgendered (or heterosexual, or asexual!) in RL, but you're not gonna deduce that simply through choice of avatar.

Wow, no one has ever thought to ask this question before!

I would like to extend this question to cover any males who play Tomb Raider or who enjoyed the film 'Elektra' as well.

Have not really thought about it and do not really care. I have had a few guys tell me that they use a female avi in different online worlds for a variety of reasons. I go on the assumption that what they tell me is true.

I just don't think we do ourselves or anyone any good by trying to play those kind of guessing games.

My fiancé, the mighty Raynor, RL male, has a female alt who's, erm, a power-hungry pseudo ancient Egyptian queen....is that, like, dangerous? :D
