How to prove you are not a minor in SL?

Personally this guy doesn't talk like someone who has experienced SL firsthand.

That's never stopped a politician before, either. Reality has nothing to do with their dream worlds.. and their dream worlds are apparently a lot more perverted than Second Life.

And why don't politicians ask the correct questions concerning minors in adult environments? Where the hell are their parents?!

Oh Christ, things can't be that bad where I have to supply the condoms as well, are they?

You wouldn't think so. You gotta watch some men though. They are more worried about the destination then buying the gas on the way. :p

Indeed, just wait till Jack Thomson gets on board considering the violence and stuff that is available in second life sims

Right up till someone points out the age verification does not work a lot of times.
(Let's assume that LL really can pass the buck to the individual land owner)

As far as I know the burden isn't to have a perfect system, making a "reasonable effort" is enough.

"I don't want to use age verification because...." is fine and works for us residents, but as flawed as age verification is I'm having a very hard time thinking of any reason that would justify not using it that would convince an official entity.

From: http://www.massively.com/2008/05/06/kirk-says-children-at-risk-in-second-life/

"Kirk admitted that he knew of no cases in which children had been targeted by sexual predators in Second Life."

Says it all, really. The whole Massively piece is pretty good, IMO.

That makes the singling out of Second Life even more of a mystery. I didn't think it was mentioned because it was a well-known target. Given that, I assumed that there must have been some sort of incident which could be cited.

In fact, I'm surprised that there isn't at least one documented incident of a sexual predator using Second Life to hook up with a minor. I'd just think that the law of averages would produce at least one case.

That suggests to me that Second Life isn't the platform of choice for sexual predators, for reasons that don't necessarily have anything to do with age verification policies or laws.

There is something of a forced anonymity in Second Life. You can't use your real name for your avatar (without paying a thousand bucks). You can't be associated with your real image.

It's possible to stick your real picture and your real name in your profile, but it's not the default and almost no one does it.

I'm not very familiar with MySpace, but from what I've seen of it, people post their real names and pictures regularly.

I think a connection with a real name or real face is what helps predators and stalkers get excited about predating and stalking. That piece of real information is emotionally valuable to them.

That built-in, default anonymity might be Second Life's best discouragement against predators.

Generally, the law will only require you to take reasonable steps to protect your adult content from minors. It is not unreasonable to decide not to use a system that kills your business without any appreciable effect on preventing minors from accessing it.

The main reason, though, is that people like lawmakers want to focus on Second Life, the platform, rather than the residents who use the platform, is because (1) Linden Labs is one big, singular target as compared to thousands of small targets, and (2) Linden Labs is more likely to be able to pay something on a lawsuit judgment than those thousands of residents, most of whom probably have zero to negative net worth.

You mean, there are Rite Aid or CVS stores in Second Life? How did I miss those??? I have been looking all over for a store where I can purchase bandages for all the times I plummet to my death from the top story of a store, 3rd floor balconies, skyboxes, etc.
Yep. And you never know when you'll need to pick up a pair of pantyhose at 3AM.
Isn't that also where we need to go for our SLubbers or SLondoms or whatever we are calling them these days?
:p

Everyone is asked for a birth date to affirm their age when they register for SL.

Porn sites require you to click a 'Yes, I Am 18 or Older' box or button to access their content.

You can lie either way, so why is the porn site's method acceptable and SL's is not? Especially since the porn site is likely to be FAR more graphic...

Someone on SLU also pointed out that the Congressman referred to the SL *web site* as having the potential pornographic material, which just indicates further that he's never actually experienced the platform for himself.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I suppose it's because SL is interactive, whereas porn sites are just places for lil Johnny to go sit google-eyed. If lil Johnny was in SL (illegally of course) he might actually pretend to do all that stuff that he sees on the porn site.

Some sites have forums and chat rooms though.

(Actually, I'm removing my post, since speculation about whether an avatar name might be connected to a person with that real life name violates the Second Life TOS.)

*giggles* I have too much connection with reality to be a politician! I mean, I know that to not sound like a complete putz is to actually go INTO the game I'm talking about and explore it. And I know that many parents need the lessons on internet safety more than their kids do!
