But from a CORPORATE perspective, you don't go after the lowest. You go for those with money to burn.
Not to give too much credit to stereotypes, but I don't think the "bigger is better so I must spend all my money to get the best puter so I can boast about my fps" (male) geeks are SL's (be it the economy or direct LL tier) biggest spenders :).

I like that idea. Something that lets a user choose how they want it to run before logging in.

I have this weird feeling. From a corporate outlook (a.k.a. Money),
WHO would you prefer to use your product?

A) People who can afford top-of-the-line or at least shell out $$$ for a new system every so often, who most likely would spend $$ on SL for anything, including land.

B) People who can't keep up, let alone come up with the $$ for an island.

Just making myself wonder. ;)

I'd want as many people as possible, with as broad a range of equipment as possible. Anybody with a computer and a connection can use the internet, what they use it for and to what degree is determined by their equipment. If SL is to become the "Next Internet/Metaverse" (tm), then this should apply as well. If not then all it really is is a nice little game, where Geeks can come and play "Mine is bigger than yours"

What is the reasoning behind "your video card is not supported" then? Seems to me that SL has been reduced to an expensive chat room lately anyway, you certainly don't need a high end graphics card for that.

You are right about that.

It would be interesting to see a statistic on Sims bought by in-world money and those bought from RL money.

BIG flaw in this argument.

Those people with "money to burn" (people who buy islands) use that money to sublet those islands to people who don't have "money to burn"

If you remove the sublessors from the system, the people with "money to burn" don't need to burn as much. They will just buy however much land they need for their own use and stop.

Be interesting to hear if LL have any 'secret deals' with video card manufacturers...

I refuse to believe that message. I got it on my laptop and another computer that run just fine. I think things would be much better if that message was just removed because it's more dodge from tech support calls than anything actually meaningful. (>_<;)

Also, I found that running dual-client was a torture fest in the old viewer. I thought things would get worse with Windlight. I had to go dual on Sunday when they blocked profile viewing form 1 to 4 so I could share items with my alt and I've never seen things more stable. It was amazing for me to watch both clients run Ultra and not lag. Epic fun FTW! \(^_^)/

--------------------------

I like SL because it's crowded with chatty people. I like it better when I can share my time with those people in a beautiful environment. Take a look at the Snapzilla pages of mine, Marianne's, and a whole load of other people. There is so much beauty to be seen in many people's builds, the environments available, and now even just an empty beach. During the down time, I checked out Open Life Grid... No people... No environment... No thanks... (>_<;)

With Windlight, sunsets are so much more than just an orange gradient. The lighting and shadows do feel more believable. I argue that the people that think the shadows are too intense have been looking at too many magazine photos that are flooded with reflectors and mega-flashbulbs. Really, yes, proper lighting is needed for staging an appearance. That's true for RL too. I'm a hobbyist photographer and understand that very well. I know the feeling of waiting for 3 hours until the sun is 'just right'. So when I see the posts that say "this or that time of day makes things ugly" I just think... no kidding! There are some of us that don't want to look like we're staged for the impulse-buy rack at the market. (^_^)

When it comes to technology and stuff like that. Why do people go 'Amish' in their own little island of time? Really... I mean, is it so wrong to advance? People seem to love to find a technological point in time and say "this is gospel, everything after this is useless fluff". Even I'm resisting the move to Vista. But I'm resisting it because everything I'm using now totally satisfies me in XP. But, come the day I find something that NEEDS Vista. I will get the hardware that supports it and make the move. (>_>;)

I follow the industry, the industry doesn't follow me. (^_^)

Just tried it, I love the way it looks, especially the way the sun reflects in objects.

I run it custom on a half way between high and ultra settings and its frame rate is reasonably comfortable on Gforce 7600GS with 512mb ram, though not as fast as I'd like, but its soo damn pretty I dont want to turn anything down detail wise just yet...

The thing thats always bugged me though (and I think what bugs a lot of users) is that with the very same hardware I can run far FAR better graphics at much higher frame rates on other computer games.

Yes I accept that streaming a realtime word environment has an impact, but still, once objects are loaded from the surrounding area, there isn't much excuse to justify how much slow the rendering of the 3d environment is, when other companys that develope cutting edge computer games can squeeze far more frames per second with their engines.

So I'm hoping as second life gets further developed, that code will get tweaked so things will run a lot faster on present hardware.
