From: Jannae Karas And the true problem is that SL is down, or when not down it is borked. Who cares what it looks like when it does not work worth a damn for anybody, regardless of what hardware you use.
This simple fact will be the thing that drives customers away, or keeps new ones from coming in.
I give you that - but that's to be expected with a big update like this. I just hope it gets fixed soon personally.

From: Jannae Karas They may very well be tech savvy, but not care enough about this buggy platform to waste their time trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Not everyone who might have some interest in SL is as fanatical (or addicted) as those of us who generally frequent these forums. Come on - you're being silly now. Second Life is a program you HAVE to put a lot of time into to get the hang of. Just changing a few sliders a bit more to the left doesn't take Einstein to figure out. I found it a lot harder to figure out how the inventory worked, with all the icons, the permissions, etc. simply because it IS more complex than just lowering the amount of particles or draw distance. If they don't want to invest time into changing the settings, they won't want to invest time in getting to know Second life anyway. Why do I feel that nearly all the complaints involve mountains vs mole hills?

From: Colette Meiji It might be hard to describe ..
Even before Windlight was ever heard of some people had complex sculpted looks which they obviously spent a lot of time and money on.
While many others don't.
For example I spent over 10,000 Lindens and dozens of hours putting Carli Together. Heck must have been 20 hours on my usual hairstyle alone.
People who don't concentrate as much on how lighting affects their appearance are often going to miss the differences.
Mainly for me, All the things I hated about the lighting in the old client got even more pronounced in Windlight.
Some examples -
too many face angle problems without light shining directly being a big one,
another is the shadow area between the breasts HA HA you look better in windlight and you don't even know it

How many restarts enmasse and by private appointment in the last few weeks. How many days with transaction failed warnings, don't rez warnings, ghost prims, selected sat upon on more than half the prims in a bleeping empty parcel, teleport not working, region down, search borked, freinds list not loading and on and on. The roll out of these new changes may have highlighted these endemic problems, but did not cause them (although they may have caused some new ones)

The roll out of these new changes may have highlighted these endemic problems, but did not cause them (although they may have caused some new ones) From what I hear, this was caused by gradual upgrades of the servers - LL didn't do it all at once or I can imagine that we'd have been without SL for nearly a week. "Rolling upgrades" are pretty much the best solution. And trust me, I'm in a far worse position than most of you. I just rented a large piece of land which is costing me many dollars each day, because I was starting a store yet I barely had the chance to design anything to sell. Yet look at me - I'm not furious. I'm a bit annoyed, but I'm wise enough to know all this comes with the territory so to speak. A lot of people here just need to learn relativate things and not go throwing toys out of their pram. It's a lot less stressful

The whole "we paid for it so it has to be perfect" just DOES NOT WORK when it comes to anything related to software or Internet. LL needs to improve SL, and that means unforeseen problems. Can't deal with that? I'm sorry but that's life. Sorry to be so tough but this is how it goes. When you joined Second Life, you agreed to these terms. That doesn't mean I don't hope things will be fixed soon, but moaning won't help. In fact, if we support the LL team, I'm sure they'll be a lot happier with the work they do compared to all the moaning they must hear and read which will hardly make them try their best if they only get ingratitude as a result anyway.

From: Icarus Lytton Well then it will be optimized more in the future. It means performance will improve, so what are you complaining about? The new viewer isn't even mandatory yet so by the time it will be, you'll probably have an optimized version.
Oh, and the 9800 series is badly outdated anyway - you're talking about a 4-5 year old card here. It doesn't even support pixel shading 2.0!
Just stick with the old viewer and wait for optimised code. But don't expect your ancient Geforce4 Ti4200 to run Windlight. A 6XXX card or higher will be needed at least. I'd say, get a 8600 or so, or an X1900XT. Pretty cheap and great performance. When are you writing this? The 1.19.0 and above were made mandatory like 2 days ago... The 9800 was only part of an example of superceding model numbers that had nothing at all to do with being up to SL minimum requirements. The issue is.. with 1.19.0 mandatory, and it's known that they don't yet support many older, but quite capable chips... some that ran SL fine 2 days ago have to suddenly choose between sputter/freeze/flicker/crash and not using SL at all. Telling these people to "stop moaning" is pretty darn lame.

In that case, I understand the frustrations more, but you'll just have to grin and bare it for a little while. But like people said before, if more people had actively helped the Windlight team, I'm sure the older chip sets would have been better supported too.

Depending on whether you use Windlight or not, the mole hills may look like mountains.

From: Icarus Lytton I can't count the amount of times I have to help someone out with something that can easily do themselves if they would even read the manual or just read what's on the screen. One colleague came running to me a few weeks ago saying Photoshop wouldn't start and it gave an error. I went to the computer, and just read the error and it said that a plugin would not load and said to click okay to continue. She had clicked cancel o_O. I asked her, why didn't you click okay like it told you to? And she was like "well I didn't read it, it looked too technical". *bangs head on desk* Heh, my mom would say, "I'm done with the email now, what do I do?" and I'd tell her to log out, and she'd be like, "How?" and I would have to tell her it is the link that says "LOG OUT" and it's still at the top of the screen where it has always been... but I guess she just needed some time to familiarize herself with things, it *is* a bit scary when everything is new, and there's so much information to take in, which can be overwhelming. I am different, I google for information and try to figure things out myself -- which is how I discovered how to turn off the typing animation, and how to set my graphics preferences to reduce lag -- but there are all kinds of people in this world, I guess. Different people learn differently too.

Different people learn differently too. Yeah they do - I just wish people wouldn't panic and at least *try* before asking for help. I turned down a help desk job because I had a friend who got depressed after only a month. At the end, he felt that half the world was filled with borderline retards and if you listened to his stories, you were very much inclined to agree lol. But people really aren't too stupid to figure things out - it's just a mix of being overwhelmed and being too lazy. After a week in SL, people thought I had been there for many months and even accused me of being an alt for an older character. And why? because I wanted to learn, and didn't expect everything to come to me instead of the other way round. It's an attitude problem - just like i'm much more laid back with problems. Stressing out over insignificant things like these is not worth it. And people who do have a lot to lose over SL will have the resources and knowledge to get over the hurdles anyway.

I give up, you are way too reasonable and good natured to be for real. Had hoped to check up on my tenants to see if they are ok. Some have rent due (or overdue) but I can't fault them as I am unsure that they have been able to be in world at a time when transactions were working (or able to be in world at all). Still, it's a gorgeous day here a little north of LL's HQ. My women's soccer team takes the pitch for a match against a very strong opponent in a little over two hours, and I am starting as goal keeper. Going to enjoy (hopefully) a little RL for the time being.

Wind light looks great for water and sky and makes SL quicker and faster for rendering items at a distance by doing some kind of partial rendering process. This is all great and wonderful as a Client in SL and I do love the views.
However....... It total sucks for me as a builder and clothing maker. Textures are off and it's hard to get a good overall view of large buildings. Everything is over bright which forces me to turn my computer setting not to reflect how colors are in the real world based on software for calibrating colors but to try and make SL easier to look at when building and making clothes.
Also.....
Windlight might look cool now but your eyes and brain might get tired of the over bright effect. It doesn't feel right and it will end up the way of most "cool" effects like Laser Light shows and and IMAX theaters. Cool to look at once in a while but you won't want to see it all day long but for those of us who make a living in SL.... too bad.

I can see it now- this weekend we will be bombarded with skin makers claiming their skins look gorgeous in Windlight. I bet with the down time today, they are all making them as we speak lolol Well here is my 2 cents for whats its worth. I spent $4000 recently on a skin that looks like crap in windlight and im not spedning another dime on a new skin. Im gonna do an exepriemnt and see if guys really look at ya boobs and butt before your face hahahahahaha so take that!!!!!!!!! lmfao sorry i had to say it

From: Chip Midnight Unfortunately it conflicts with much of the artistry of skin making as we've come to know it, and no matter how much nicer the WindLight shading is, it doesn't compare to the look that could be achieved with a skillfully made skin. Good shading could make the avatar look like it had much more detailed anatomy than it actually has. Windlight shades very nicely, but it makes the avatar mesh look like the avatar mesh, revealing it in all its anatomically lacking glory. Well maybe thats why then. Sounds reasonable. Still that means we really need a better mesh.

From: Icarus Lytton God no - for me facelights are a lot harder to do than just changing settings. Getting the right strength of the lights, the right angle, setting them up so you look good in every environment ... it's a lot of tweaking to get it right. You can buy preset facelights of course, but depending on your shape and stuff, you still need to tweak them.
(mini rant coming)
And the reality is that a lot of people are just lazy. I'm tired of seeing the excuse "they're not tech savvy". The truth is that you don't have to be tech savvy. You just need to have some common sense and not be lazy.
Do you think "tech savvy" people are clairvoyant? They don't know most things any more than you do, but they make the effort to try and search it instead of going "oh dear, it looks complicated, let's ask someone else".
I mean, look at the settings - what's so hard about them to understand? Amount of particles = amount of particles shown. Now that requires an IQ of 200 *sarcasm*!
Let's be honest here, people don't like to fiddle because they are too lazy to find out what everything means. Despite there being a nice wiki which neatly explains it all, despite there being countless tutorials. But oh no, it's too much work. If something doesn't work right away, off they go to the forum to complain.
No, if people would invest as much time into helping themselves as they did in complaining, there wouldn't be anywhere near as many problems. People need to start depending on themselves more and not automatically assume something is too hard for them to do. Most things are designed so that even a zombie could use it - you just need to practice, fiddle with things, and you'll be fine.
*rant over* Those people you are complaining about are LL's customers. However Lazy they are, is how Lazy they are. Its likely a higher percentage of true gamers interested in Second Life have already tried it ... While the larger untapped market is the non-gamers ... Who more likely than not are even lazier. The "default setting of the regular client" should always work decently on the big selling low-end computers right out of the box. It should be like a TV plug it in hook the cable up and go. LL should go down to Best Buy and Circuit city and buy the cheap PCs and see how well things work when they figure stuff out. And they should keep them around for a couple years, because thats what their customers are going to do. If anyone should have to come up with their own custom viewer its the high performance set .. since they actually have the knowhow to do it. Although it would be better if LL included a high performance viewer. -------- Now if LL were claiming to be a niche virtual world game .... then thats different. At that point, heck require higher end-stuff. But thats not their goal. People should be thinking more browser and less high tech 3D-shooter. Since what LL wants to be is a universally used product.

From: Colette Meiji Those people you are complaining about are LL's customers. However Lazy they are, is how Lazy they are. Except they're not. From: Colette Meiji Its likely a higher percentage of true gamers interested in Second Life have already tried it ... While the larger untapped market is the non-gamers ... Who more likely than not are even lazier. Let's be realistic here. People who are really lazy won't even bother with SL. SL takes several days to really get the hang of on a superficial level. I tried to get several friends on SL and quite a few just didn't have the will to scratch below the surface. Those that did, though, loved SL. Besides, I don't believe at all about the "true gamers interested" part because it's exactly the gamers that seem the most turned off by Second Life's old fashioned graphics. SL can't compete anywhere CLOSE to modern games. It's exactly because of that, that LL HAS to invest into graphical upgrades. Intel are utter dickheads and have been pushing low end systems with inbuilt graphic chips that would struggle just running Vista! And these cheap PCs you name are exactly that. If LL did what you said, SL would look horrible to the extreme and I'm sorry but I'd leave immediately if they catered for the bottom-end users of the market. Not a SINGLE low end system has a decent graphics card. Why? Because it's the graphics card that costs the most. The average user doesn't NEED a good card, but SL users DO. I come to Second Life because I want to feel the mood of places. I want to really feel like I'm there. The new update really helps this. Make SL look like it can run on a 386 with 2Mb memory (okay I exagerate but you get the idea), and you'll scare WAY more people away than you'd gain. People BUY ITEMS because they look good. If they look crap, who would find the price tag worth it? I was already finding the old viewer to be outdated. The shadow and lighting system was really horrible despite what some people here claim. Now what we need next is new 3D models and then we're set for another few years.

You are completely missing the forest for the trees. They are all absolutely LL's customers. Who the hell pays all these land barons? LOL the biggest activities in Second Life are shopping, socializing and playing house. None of which cater to "hardcore gamers" ahead of the average computer user. This is just silly. LL wants to be the 3D "web of the future". If they want that they need to work on the typical computer systems that are out there. Again they chose *not* to go the "Niche Virtual World" route.
