From: spinster Voom Yeah I just had a wander round. It's basically four huge housing schemes on a square continent. It starts out nice enough at the infohub - there's some quite good sculpty candles and bottles and things you can grab. You can catch fairies to win wings (they wouldn't rez for me, but the fairy jar was fun), and I bumped into Mari, which was nice. There's lots of purple crystals that sort of remind me of something ... but anyway, quite picturesque in a hobbity way. I like the fantasy buildings, but they are way too densely packed. Then there's the Endless Desolate Wasteland of Triangular Houses and the Endless Desolate Wasteland of Square Houses. These areas feel like suburban business parks or perhaps Butlins. They'd feel a bit more residential with a scattering of dogsh*t, a few cars on bricks and the odd broken fridge. The Japanese housing is prettier, but again, too densely packed and too sprawling. I hope LL are going to set home automatically for these newbies and provide prominent information about the ways to find "home". There's been a couple of "I can't find the land I bought" threads on here. I can foresee a flurry of "how do I find my Linden Home?" posts on the flogs. Linden Homes ... this is housing, not homes. I wish they'd reread their Jane Jacobs. As for the covenant ... no skyboxes and no sandboxing? So basically, "here's your home, now sit neatly and enjoy it" Possible new growth areas ... - low prim furniture built to match the themes - skybox rentals by the hour (can you do this on Mature these days?) I took a few pics and will try to upload this evening. Curious about the no skybox part.....I wasn't sure what to make of the way it was worded, does it mean 'no skyboxes' or 'no skyboxes outside of prim limits/landlines and no megaprims?'

I understood it as ... - no skyboxes - no megaprims - no temp rezzers I could be wrong ...

From: LittleMe Jewell Actually you are getting a house pluse 117 prims for L$3800 per year, or L$73 per week. On which you can pretty much do nothing, given how things are worded. With rentals, you have a bit more leniency, or at least I assume so. There is a reason I say this is aimed more at new premium accounts, rather than existing ones and that's.. most of us know better. As was pointed out, it's more like military housing or maybe a really, really strict homeowners association. Sure, you might get your choice of 4 types of housing in each "theme," but you can't do anything to the house. No real yard for "planting" things. Furniture, sure, but it better be in theme or nosy nut next door might report you. No TV's in the Elderglen area! Next question is, can you change things like the media? If so.. LL is opening themselves up to all kinds of hell, because Barbie Elf might wanna rock out on her plot, which is totally out of theme. Also, got to thinking about it.. you have less privacy there than you do on the mainland. At least on the mainland you can at least throw up a megaprim screen if something/one annoys you.

Where does it say no Skyboxes? I see: From: someone * Land cannot contain sky boxes, temp-rezzers, or individual prims beyond the allocated size of the Second Life Viewer build tools - 10x10x10m (no megaprims).
To me that says no megas? Or is it "no sky boxes, no temp-rezzers AND no megas?"

From: cinda Hoodoo Last i looked it was $9.95 a mo heh, $10 bucks, minus the 1200 L you get in stippend, still comes to about $5 a month.. Which is what I said. And if you do it annually, it's $1.00 a month. From: someone which is still higher than 40 cents a week. What's 40c a week? $1.00 a month is $0.25 a week.

From: Milla Janick As long as they're paying for a premium membership, what reason is there to kick them out or impose some time limit on occupancy? I agree (even though it would be in my own self-interest for a time limit on owning a Nascera parcel to be imposed, since I build houses.) If the goal of all this is ultimately a higher retention rate for those who try SL---not to mention a higher rate of Premium memberships---then there's no good reason to add stress to what the newbies are experiencing by telling them 'you've got 30 days (or 60 or whatever) to find a new place and move on'. The emphasis should be on education. Newbies won't know that terraforming, having a skybox, having a customized house, etc, are even possible, unless they have a reliable source of information about what's possible in SL. Assuming they DO have good information, then many of them will become motivated to move on. In re the likelihood of the new sims locking down, due to the 40-avatar-per-sim limit conflicting with the '54-avatar-homes-per-sim' thing: LL says newbies can choose the house style they want, but they haven't said the person could choose the location. Perhaps someone at LL has thought of assigning newbies to sims by time zone in which they live---so that at most times, only a quarter of the residents would be likely to be inworld. (Of course that would be likely to put Japanese speakers next to German speakers and so on, but maybe LL would like the Its A Small World After All aspect of that possibility.)

From: Raudf Fox There is a reason I say this is aimed more at new premium accounts, rather than existing ones and that's.. most of us know better. Absolutely. The only real incentives any of us would have to take a house there would be a) curiosity about how the experiment will work out, and/or b) an orientation toward enjoying helping newbies, and/or c) an intention to try to sell things to the newbies, in spite of the 'no commerce' Covenant. "a" and "b" are pretty harmless and in fact LL may be counting on "b" to save on labor costs---sort of an unofficial Mentor program. "c" will require LL labor to police. You have to wonder how many resources LL is willing to devote to such policing.

From: someone I know I could look this up, but since you're chatting, what's the criteria besides being premium? Cannot own land already? Have to be a certain number of days/months/weeks young/old? From: LittleMe Jewell You simply have to be premium and have 512 of tier available.
...and never have posted a critical remark about LL.

From: Raudf Fox I dunno, Faithless. Given that this is for new premium accounts, I don't see how this could honestly hurt your business too much. I honestly don't think that this will encourage a whole lot of the basic accounts to suddenly want to become premium accounts.
Not for new premiums, I was invited by LL to choose one today and I am here 3 years...and own a few regions.

Haven't read the whole thread but...
Has anyone else noticed the tatami flooring in the Japanese-styled houses has the mats meeting in cross shapes, which is considered unlucky for a home?

That's interesting (and potentially could send Asian customers away, which is surely not what LL intended!) I noticed they were fuzzy-rez textures, but I wasn't aware of the cultural significance.

At one time, I had 4 premium accounts. I was thinking it could be sort of cool to have all four pick the same quad-plex in that boxey suburb joint - then I could party with myself in the central courtyard.
/me anxiously watches email for an invite ........

The more I think back, this is actually a really good deal for a first time home - other than the fact that it will give the tenant an unrealistic view of what you can do with a 512. Anyway, my first rental was an apartment, definitely smaller than 512m of space, no yard and only the smallest of decks, and most definitely no where near 100 prims - can't remember what I paid though. My second place was a full 512 plot, but the house was supplied so I could not change anything about it and the house did count toward my prim limits -- and I had to pay for it, unlike these.

A lot depends on whether or not LL breaks down and does some actual marketing.
Only some percentage of those who are giving SL a try now are the type to be interested enough in owning one of these to go Premium. Careful marketing could up that percentage.
(others might be more intrigued by the fact that [according to Jack's blog entry today] all 64 sims were populated with houses and trees in 13 minutes....!!!!)

One potential problem I see for the new home owner here is if they lose their LM or don’t know how to set their home location or create LMs then they are going to get lost the first time they wander away from their house. My god they all look the same and are stacked one right next to the other. “get out of my house” … “no you get out of my house” … “wait now who’s this coming in the door?” … “why are you two in my house?”
