From: Void Singer it'd actually be nice if something like this were used to at least make more realistic facial expressions, even with the reduction in resolution needed for SL... *nods* New facial expressions would be nice. The defaults are so creepy and horrific looking that I prefer to avoid products that even use them. Nothing like hopping on a sex bed and looking like the Joker on crack as your mouth hangs open in a cheesy grin. It would be nice if creators that make use of facial expressions gave an optional command to disable them for those of us they give nightmares to.

Have a look at the sculpty talk-jaws on Uchi Desmoulin's most recent avatars and weep.

Even with near-cartoon avatars and strange walk animations, SL can be unhealthily immersive for some people.
Adding that level of 'reality' would be to place the image above all. I'd see that as the bottom end of the pure consumer market, with no taxing of the viewers' imaginations.
I think that having that level of 'reality' in an immersive online world where everyone is gorgeous and well off would make a lot of people desperately unhappy in RL.

From: ogilvy Abbot Howdy, Where can I do this??? How do I do this, desperately looking to get some real life looking action thanks a bunch You won't like the results, that's what we've been saying. It looks totally creepy. If you don't mind spending some serious money, the folks at Second Skin Labs do a much better job...but even though they are (IMO) the best for an avatar that "looks like you", it still won't look REALLY like you. The avatar mesh is just too coarse.

From: Rock Ryder I was blown away a few months ago when I first saw the Emily video, but this new avatar engine from Mova http://www.mova.com/ is just staggering. Look for the Geni4 links. Can we have this in SL, pretty please? Rock I like it.

That's one hell of a mesh. Like Chosen said, my computer would retch up all its wires if it tried to render that. Speaking of avatar mesh... I've posted this in another thread but just in case: Improve the avatar mesh http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3432

From: Keira Wells Now I'm rather curious what would happen if the user left the computer for a bit.... would their face melt off? XD Now *that* would be cool.

The Geni4 video clips are offensively stupid. I'd be happy to wait until another company created the tech so that this one didn't derive any benefit from thinking so little of its potential market.

With a mesh like that, landbots could look exactly like they do in RL. ... instead of looking like this. OK. Fess up! .. the land baron who runs this little cutie. hmmmm, maybe this is the kind of thing that is scaring the crap out of newbies when the bots get diverted to Welcome Centres on login.

From: ogilvy Abbot Howdy, Where can I do this??? How do I do this, desperately looking to get some real life looking action thanks a bunch Avatar island has the face recognition thing, they also recently released a new tool, you can find more info at their website http://www.cyberextruder.com (edited to add, I have been having issues with the web today, for me the page is currently not loading, if it is giving you errors too, try again later) No harm in getting more info I downloaded the software and have been having a hoot just trying different pics to see what they would look like it basically lets you preview it on your computer in the privacy of your home, if you like it, you pay for a license which lets you do up to 10 individual skins from the software (using up to 10 different pics if you want) (of course the textures are yours and you can do to them what you want, including fine tuning and adding tattoos) The main pic on their website, has 2 guys and a girl showing their SL matches, I fine tuned the guy with the beard and the girl and it was a very easy process. (the better the picture you use, the better your results and the less fine tuning you may have to do)

I tend to agree that that level of "reality" wouldn't be right for SL. I also think that even if that WAS workable on todays hardware in SL, it's just too realistic and would suffer badly from the "freaky" factor. An upgrade to something in between what we have now and the quality of that model in the video would be a different story... that would be sweet. Not taxing the viewer's imaginations as far as the visuals go I think would be a good thing, not a bad thing. It seems to me you'd spend less time trying to overlook some of the ugly things we do now, and actually spend those thought cycles on whatever it is that one does in SL. As an immersionist in SL, there's a lot of things about our current AV that require extra "suspension of disbelief", so some hopped up AV visuals would actually make SL more enjoyable.

It's evolution. They were having this same conversation 10 year ago, about SL standard of graphics. I remember playing Goldeneye on the N64 and thinking how fantastically realistic the graphics were: http://nintendoforever.free.fr/N64/Goldeneye/Tests_Goldeneye/goldeneye05.jpg
