I was blown away a few months ago when I first saw the Emily video, but this new avatar engine from Mova http://www.mova.com/ is just staggering. Look for the Geni4 links. Can we have this in SL, pretty please?

I'm impressed by the technology, but I wouldn't like. I'm real uncomfortable not having our avs have a cartoony look. Anything else and I get kinda creeped out.

Motion capture is always going to look better than synthetic motion generation. I don't expect we'll see this kind of thing in VR until we're all wrapped up in skin-tight mocap suits.

You are way out of date. Neither Emily nor Jennifer (Geni4) use MOCAP. The latest technology films real people in HD video, then sends that video to be processed directly by the software. The results are far superior to MOCAP. Rock _____________________

Sure they do. That *is* MOCAP. No it isn't. MOCAP is a marker-based system. Geni4 uses a markerless surface capture system, an entirely different process, rending over 100,000 polygons per scene. Mova offer a MOCAP system as well as their new Surface Capture technology. Rock _____________________

Steve Perlman, interesting.
Isn't this technology more aimed at film animation than real-time gaming? The process still has a manual component, and is obviously a voracious CPU hog. Plus, that's where Perlman's spent his time in recent years. . |

It's still motion capture, even if they call it "surface capture" instead of "motion capture" for marketing reasons. No it isn't. Motion Capture (MOCAP) ONLY captures the movements of the actor, not his/her visual appearance. Surface Capture DOES capture visual appearance as well as motion. MOCAP requires special hardware and markers, Surface Capture does not. Respectfully suggest you read the MOCAP wiki page. Rock _____________________

Plus, that's where Perlman's spent his time in recent years. . No, the whole point now of these technologies, plus OnLive (another of Perlman's inventions), is that you can have high-end games on low-end PCs, using the latest techniques in compression and streaming. Even MS are now forecasting the end of their own Windows system, and are moving to the centralised server concept, plus streaming. See this story of their Midori development http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7540282.stm Rock _____________________

Looks amazing!
When I think of the amount of time myself and my friends spend trying to look as good as we can, given what is available in SL, any improvements are welcome as far as I am concerned. I take it that if the avatar can look as good as this, there will be a corresponding improvement in the definition of clothes, shoes, hair, etc, in fact, everything? Drool ![]() |

How we going to turn into other species if we use this surface capture? Also I have a bit more surface area in RL than my avatar does. How am I going to look trim if my jowls are quivering? For that matter how are we going to eat pizza?
It would be the end of SL! _____________________
