From: Tiana Whitfield There is a RL out there? *looks around wildly* Ok so now I am scared, you are not the first I have heard mention this "RL" thing... I was watching an episode of 'The Office" and this episode involved SL. I started to miss the game and decided to get back in to it. This RL thing huh, I hear it's boring and you cannot even fly *gasps* thats just madness. Driving to get places? What were these people in RL thinking!

From: Vaughn Hotshot I didn't leave a partner, just a girlfriend. I'm sure she was happy to know her feelings didn't matter, cuz she was 'just a girlfriend' Ladies, we have a real winner here

I was just trying to clarify that this person was my girlfriend not my partner (there is a difference in the two) and NOT that she was unimportant, she was my best friend. I'm getting the impression you just posted in this thread to cause drama, judgment, not really contribute to the conversation.

You started the post and for some reason cared about what others would think, yet couldn't even tell your friends you were leaving. For all they knew, you died in a tragic accident. People just need to think more about how they effect others in SL. There are real people with real feelings. I'd be pretty pissed off to find out a close friend/boyfriend/etc had just up and left SL with no respect or regard for letting me know. Would it have killed you to leave your friends a note? RL should always come first but It's not cool to leave people wondering and worrying...

Not an attempt to derail here - but tangentially relevant to the OP's question. I recently found that it was handy to have an email address available (gmail account set up in avi's name) to contact a close friend who I was concerned about (said friend lives in LA metro area and since I hadn't heard from her in world was concerned because of the fires). In any event, having an email address for close friends would allow an explanation if circumstances dictated an extended absence from SL. My .02 - YMMV.

if you have old acquaintances you want to reconnect with, approach them with honesty. old account cancelled, this is the new you. let the chips fall where they may. i wouldn't spend any energy avoiding anyone, and i wouldn't try to fix broken relationships. no matter wut, i would be polite and friendly, and take hints if they reject you. plenty of other fish in the sea.....

" and make a note that other users might experience this change differently. Heck, you need to go into your account to enable pictures, sigs, etc., so some don't see the pictures anyway

You should contact her and all your old friends, but set VERY low expectations for how they react. say.... 1/10 of them will be interested in restarting the friendship, and even then, it will never be what it once was. and.. apologize. also would be a nice gesture to offer your IM or email outside contact info for those you want to try to rebuild a trusting relationship with.

Oh, I really should have thought of this experience: Very recently someone I really liked suddenly started appearing again in SL. Disappeared suddenly months ago, and just now started again in SL (or seemed to be "just now" . I was very very happy to see them again. This "main"/"alt" think is confusing. It was a friend of the critter I was prior to being Lexxi. I never actually left this critter, but I only use her for one thing, or I should say, for one person. So, which is the main, which is the alt? I don't use this other critter except for one, as mentioned, and I have other alts. Both prior critter and Lexxi are premium. I guess I am an alt. What an odd thing to run through my tiny pixel brain. Oh, and there is that - I actually started excitedly welcoming them back to SL in IM. . and they were confused. "um . . thanks" . . I had spotted them as Lexxi, fixed up the mistake and let them know who I had previously been

From: Vaughn Hotshot Yes my AVI is new, but I am not a newbie to SL...but have questions anyhow. No I am not begging for lindens, but haha I won't stop you from sending me some to get started. Anyhow...Been away for a while, decided to get back in to second life. I had some ties with a few people, including 2 people that I was partnered with and a girlfriend I left abruptly. I just basically poofed and that was it.
Should I try to get in touch with some of the people I use to know, or should I just start all over again. Mind you some people know one another and of course news travels fast in SL. Starting from scratch seems frustrating, but in the same sense refreshing. Anyhow had a similar experience? If you have real feelings for your old friends, have the hard conversation with them and keep the friendships growing. If not, spare everyone the drama and create new friendships and maybe consider that for every hello there is a goodbye of some sorts and what kind you are willing to have with your new friends. Welcome back. Interesting to know how things are different for you this time around.
