My real life "Lady" friend (she attended the wedding of Freddie Windsor and Sophie Winkleman the other weekend) claims that getting tables at supposedly full restaurants (particularly in America :p ) is just about the last perk of nobility left. I don't complain when we jump the queue. ;)

Ah, yes, but that is in America, where they are still (perversely) awed by such things.

Pep (Oh, and there is a world of difference between "class" and "style"; and if you don't know the difference you have neither. )

Yes, and while I hold the former valueless, I prize the latter. That isn't to say that I don't value some of the things associated with the notion of "class" (in this context); merely that I reject the term itself because of the associated meanings bundled in with it.

Love,
Treasure (who is ok having less class and style than your 'Lady' friend. Is 'Lady friend' what one calls ones' wife on that side of the pond? :p

No, this is a friend who is less than a hundredth in line to the English throne.

I still prefer the tern "Lord High Protector" when applied to myself. As for Scylla and Jig, I wouldn't call them wenches or whores, so I will stick with lady or maybe girls.

You wouldn't? But...but...Jig is half of Lindal and Jig's Camp Followers!

I gotta talk to our PR firm. The word's not getting out.

Along the line somewhere the OP admitted that they weren't actually looking for a partner.

Pep (Don't worry, their previous thread was a trainwreck as well.)

Why change the habit of a lifetime, Eli?

"Facetious" came to English from the Middle French word "facetieux," which traces to the Latin word "facetia," meaning "jest." "Facetia" seems to have made only one other lasting contribution to the English language: "facetiae," meaning "witty or humorous writings or sayings." "Facetiae," which comes from the plural of "facetia" and is pronounced fuh-SEE-shee-ee or fuh-SEE-shee-eye, is a far less common word than "facetious," but it does show up occasionally. For example, in a letter to the editor published in the Seattle Times, August 26, 1995, a reader used the following words to describe a column written by the humorist Dave Barry: "Hey, it's a HUMOR column, based entirely upon facetiae."

My real life "Lady" friend that I pretend to know (she attended the wedding of some guy nobody cares about and some unknown woman the other weekend) claims that blah blah blah blah who cares who cares.

I made pipe art this week. First I had to rez the first pipe from my inventory...then I had to rez the pipe connector. It didn't come out at the right angle so I had to turn it 90 degrees first, then 180 degrees, no 90 degrees, then 270 degrees, no back to 180 degrees, then I had to move it right 1 meter, no 5 meters..., I had to turn it 90 degrees again, then 180 degrees, no 90 degrees, then 270 degrees, no back to 180 degrees, then I had to move it right 1 meter again, no 5 meters..., I had to turn it 90 degrees again, then 180 degrees, no 90 degrees, then 270 degrees, no back to 180 degrees, then I had to move it right 1 meter again, no 5 meters..., had to enlarge it, then reduce the size again, I had to turn it 90 degrees again, then 180 degrees, no 90 degrees, then 270 degrees, no back to 180 degrees, then I had to move it right 1 meter again, no 5 meters..., had to enlarge it, then reduce the size again, I had to turn it 90 degrees again, then 180 degrees, no 90 degrees, then 270 degrees, no back to 180 degrees, then I had to move it right 1 meter again, no 5 meters..., to enlarge it, then reduce the size again, I had to turn it 90 degrees again, then 180 degrees, no 90 degrees, then 270 degrees, no back to 180 degrees, then I had to move it right 1 meter again, no 5 meters..., had to enlarge it, then reduce the size again, I had to turn it 90 degrees again, then 180 degrees, no 90 degrees, then 270 degrees, no back to 180 degrees, then I had to move it right 1 meter again, no 5 meters..., still not right.

The English language is constantly picking up neologisms. Recently, for example, computer technology has added a number of new terms to the language. "Webinar," "malware," "netroots," and "blogosphere" are just a few examples of modern-day neologisms that have been integrated into American English. The word "neologism" was itself a brand-new coinage at the beginning of the 19th century, when English speakers first borrowed it from the French "néologisme." Its roots, however, are quite old. Ultimately, "neologism" comes from Greek "neos" (meaning "new";) and "logos" (meaning "word";).

The meaning of disingenuous has been shifting about lately, as if people were unsure of its proper meaning. Generally, it means "insincere" and often seems to be a synonym of cynical or calculating. Not surprisingly, the word is used often in political contexts, as in It is both insensitive and disingenuous for the White House to describe its aid package and the proposal to eliminate the federal payment as "tough love." This use of the word is accepted by 94 percent of the Usage Panel. Most Panelists also accept the extended meaning relating to less reproachable behavior. Fully 88 percent accept disingenuous with the meaning "playfully insincere, faux-naïf," as in the example "I don't have a clue about late Beethoven!" he said. The remark seemed disingenuous, coming from one of the world's foremost concert pianists. Sometimes disingenuous is used as a synonym for naive, as if the dis- prefix functioned as an intensive (as it does in certain words like disannul) rather than as a negative element. This usage does not find much admiration among Panelists, however. Seventy-five percent do not accept it in the phrase a disingenuous tourist who falls prey to stereotypical con artists.
