True .. but then if you are gambling all that monthly fee on something that, in the SL TOS doesn't actually exist, then why the hell would anyone gamble that much real £ in the first place?

My point is this, why do you play SL? .. for pleasure .. business .. both? SL is expensive in the first place if you start buying land .. and now for those in the EU it apparently just got more expensive. If you are playing SL for fun, and have high outgoings then I guess its time to call it a day .. if you play for business .. then you will have to adapt. Its a part of live ... the VAT man found us in SL .. adapt or leave its simple.

Yes as I said I completely disagree with the way LL have dealt with this VAT matter (guess what i own land too) but can't believe the complete outrage from some EU members. LL are incompetent at times very true .. but still they are trying to keep within the LAW ... you expect them to break the law, and then go bust when they get heaved into the courts ... where will our SL be then I wonder??

No one is expecting them to break the law!!! No is denying that taxes have to be paid if they are due.. though there is some confusion over this..

The problem is no one knew they were going to be stung right now.. where was the information? the details?

As already stated one poor person has just had delivery of an island, this was made a few days ago.. they have said if there was warning they would most likely not of brought the island..

We were not given the information to make informed choices for the last 30 days in our billing cycle when LL would of damn well knew this was coming...

Thats the problem. It smacks a little of a scam.. not the paying the taxes bit.. but with LL sitting on it then just chucking it out with no information.. knowing this will affect the WHOLE of Sl in respect to land e.t.c..

That reeks of very poor business standards and a very strange way to run a company that is multinational.

EDIT TO ADD:

In the UK I thought stupidly that the VAT was already included in the price,.. as in the UK if vat is not added to a price it HAS to say e.g.. £15.00 EXCL VAT
LL have never had that.. I had no reason to doubt that vat was NOT already being paid.

Oh I totally agree ... the way LL has handled this whole matter is beyond a joke! But there does seem to be a lot of contempt amongst members about paying the VAT at all.

The OP blamed England though, and with that I totally disagree.

Thread title should read Linden Labs VAT handling sucks ... not england sucks.

Re: your edit .. you are absolutly correct ... but this seems to be a switchover deal .. before the change LL were not liable to hand over VAT .. and now they are. It all boils down to LL NOT giving fair warning .. and to that they are guilty.

Hmmm... In what places have you been in Amsterdam? *laughs*

Mostly a beer is here around 1.50 to 2.50 Euro per glass ... but yes, there are more expensive places (*pokes Chas*).
What also makes a difference is if you talk about Dutch beer (Grolsch and alike). Imported beers can be a lot more expensive.

Morwen.

Cafe Schiller, De Jaren, Wildschut?
I need to know where you drink, if you can get a beer in Amsterdam for EUR 1.50. Jeez, that's pre-euro prices!
Although I have to admit, I do drink a lot of bottled Belgian beer when I'm in Amsterdam.
Amsterdam and Belgian beer is a great combination.

It's about 3 quid a pint in London. That's about EUR 4.50 a pint. This is still a lot less than, say, Amsterdam, where you pay about EUR 3 for a third of a litre (with about one-quarter of that pure froth).

I'm off to Munich next month and it'll be even more expensive there:))
I'm not sure we should judge a nations prices by those charged in their capitals. Everything costs more (often considerably more) in capital cities. Beer is £1.60 a pint at the nearby Students Union. £1.98 in my local pub. I'm living near Keele University (Staffordshire) at the moment.

Ah, but is it worth living in Keele to get a cheaper pint?
In Liverpool it's still possible to get a pint for £1, but I'd have to go there.

On the other hand, it seems highly likely that we've got away with not paying VAT for a while. If LL should have charged it and haven't, they will be liable, not us. So whilst more warning might have been nice, we have almost certainly benefitted financially from their delay in adding VAT.

And of course, once they knew SL was vatable they had to pay it straightaway (similarly to the gambling ban), you don't get out of obeying the law for a while just so you can warn your customers that you are going to have to obey the law. They could have swallowed the VAT themselves for a while, in fact it seems they probably have done, but there is no legal requirement for them to warn us that they are going to obey the law.

About the issue of displaying prices as "excluding VAT" I think that only applies if VAT is going to be added at the checkout. You don't see food prices given as "excluding VAT" because VAT is not payable on food in the UK. If I'd thought about it I would have assumed the SL prices included VAT, but to be honest it never occurred to me.

Well in LL VAT is added at the checkout. You look on the pricing pages and the monthly costs for membership and tier are quoted excl VAT with no mention of it going to be added once you buy the land. The land stores don't tell you if you buy at auction or an island that once you put in your bid there will be another 17.5% to pay on top.

UK law states that shown prices must include VAT or have it clearly marked it will be suject to it.

LOL! Keele village is teh cool place to live. Nice, picturesque and quiet, but lots of noise and partying just a ten minute walk away thanks to the Uni. I prefer it to central Manchester actually (where I lived until a few months ago).

So true. Hell I was paying £5 per bottle (275ml?) of piss wat... I mean Lager over 10 years ago in London Clubs ... yet the average pint was about a pound.

Hey, I grew up in Liverpool and I have my own nieces and nephews, plus about 200 cousins. I bet my nieces are scarier than yours. I know they frighten me.

Good point, I was only looking at "My account" which does say VAT will be added. If it's not on the general pricing pages, it should be.

The prices I mentioned where for all of The Netherlands, not only Amsterdam. Sorry about that.....

I am myself no beer drinker, but I have friends who do... In the big (touristic) places it will more expensive.
Last I was in Amsterdam (not that long ago) I had dinner with friends at "De Blauwe Brug" (I paid for them, so I have here the bill), we paid 2.10 Euro for a glass of beer.
For the real cheap prices you have to be in the small towns in the eastern and nothern part of The Netherlands.

A friend of mine is really into Belgian Beers. So when I go visit them I often buy some bottles as gift. Duval and "De Verboden Vrucht" are favorite :).

Yeah, well mine don't care if they leave marks, usually teeth marks.
But then they generally bypass the whole pain thing and simply kill you and eat you straight away, preferably raw.

Yes but the exchange rate isnt the issue. The issue is your purchasing power in GBP. The exchange rate sucks now, but that's simply because of the US's macroeconomy leading to a weak USD.
