I wonder if you could just get a free computer from someplace. Businesses and individuals probably get rid of thousands of computers every time they upgrade.

A few years ago, a woman did a similar thing on the internet - pleaded a sob story that got round everywhere and people sent her money. It got into the news and it worked. Then loads of people tried doing the same thing, just for the money. This sounds very much like the same thing, although the aims are much lower. Even the title sounds familiar - "Help <name>". If my memory is correct, I think the original was "Help Amy", but that memory is unreliable.

Another one that worked for the original, but not much for the copycats was the "buy my pixels" one. The guy said he needed the money to get through univerity. The word spread and and he got it - a million dollars at $1 per pixel. There were loads of copycats that barely sold any pixels.

I'm trying to figure that out. I think I'm a *little* well-known and I've never heard of her...and if photographers are any good, I usually hear about them.

ETA: Oh crap, just looked at her website. I know someone who knows her. *sigh*

What I find amazing about him is that he actually said in an interview that "people won't be able to copy this, because their sites won't be first, won't get the 'new idea' attention I got, and won't have so much marketing value".

And then a year or so later.. he, himself, tried to run another pixel sales homepage. :? Whoops!

(And as far as I'm aware he didn't actually use the money to go to University either.)

From his blog on the site, he did start university, but I heard that he dropped out. If I'm not mistaken, he took a job offer - maybe a sensible thing for him to have done.

Yes, although it seems to have gone down now. The idea was that pixels were double the price (ie, US$2 each) - but that when all the pixels were sold, the "second" US$1m would be given as a prize in a draw, with each pixel bought being one ticket.

It doesn't sound to have the same novelty appeal as the original, and not the newsworthyness, which is what caused the success of the first one. It's also what caused the success of the original "Help <name>" one.

I have a serious question....what kind of person has so LITTLE self-respect that they would post in a forum of STRANGERS and ask for money????? Reminds me of my ex, sitting home and collecting alimony while "I" am out EARNING it! I'm all for helping each other, but for God's sake, where's the responsibility of "self" in all this??????? After seeing the mom of those octuplets on Dateline last night, however, I am convinced that many out there are simply content to hold out their sweaty little hands, palms up, with high expectations and indignation at any questions.

Well, some of it certainly is! She's "living" on student loans (which she says she'll pay back when she graduates and *cough* gets a job) and food stamps. She also receives disability for her 3 year old autistic son and two of her other children, one of whom is ADHD and the other who is ADHD and borderline autistic. I sat there the entire time just wanting to slap her.
