Would it be nice if the IMAGE of an avatar stayed when offline?

Um, then you'd be laying in bed with a newb? Er...no.

Personally, I'd rather not have their avatar remain behind, unresponsive. It's frustrating enough when someone goes AFK and doesn't indicate it, or when they are deeply involved in IM's and don't realize you're standing in front of them, or when they have actually crashed several minutes ago, but still seem to be there on the screen.

Or, worse, it would encourage them to hop into your sexgen bed with you. Then not only is your bed being illicitly used when you aren't there, but so is your avatar.

The other potential issue would be really busy places. Sometimes people just log out wherever they are and set it to log into their home location every time. In a busy venue you could have hundreds of avatar images just standing around after their typists had logged off. And what of the person who logs off and leaves SL. How long are we going to have to deal with his ghost standing there?

I have a guy friend that would take a gal to bed and then just before falling asleep, tell her that his preference was to "wake with nobody else in his bed".

He always was a bit of a jerk.

I'd tell him that they have private rooms at the Hospital, and beat him unconscious.

I don't know - isn't this exactly what we need from a guy to make it more realistic -- sex and then immediately go to sleep and do not respond to the conversation?

Wow. There's a fine line between courage and stupidity. Saying something like that right before losing consciousness in a home that presumably had steak knives and blunt objects in it...that crosses the line.

What if your avatar turned into a permanent "avatar imposter", but higher resolution like my stunt double? The last thing your client would do when it logged out would be to bake the avatar texture into a set of sprites... that would also reduce the overhead of rendering disconnected avatars.

It's not going to happen, of course, but it *could* be made manageable.

I know I would likethe idea of waking up (logging on) and still seeing a SL partner beside me as they were when I went to bed and logged off.

As you say, a flat prim image would be something to use, but it's kinda like waking up in RL to a cardboard cutout of your partner.

And I guess a bit of a pain to get into place when you went to bed at night.

I appreciate the issues re shops full of offline avatars and of course that your be a BAD thing.

Perhaps a answer (though I appreciate technically not possible yet) would be if someone made a bed which grabbed an image of your avatar and displayed it when you went offline.

I know this is not possible in SL right now, but it could of course BE posible in computer terms.

If I was clever enough I guess trying to make a sculptie copy of yourself then wrapping an image of yourself onto the sculptie might be technially possible?

However, I saw a gadget the other day that copies the profile picture of the last person to TP in and displays it up on a big screen. A bit of careful adaption of this idea could get you what you have in mind, IWHT...

I'd probably wake up wearing a clown nose, a couple of codfish slippers, a moustache, and be shaved bald and painted Day-Glo yellow. And pregnant. I know you guys.

On my first day in SL I had a big dilemma. I asked someone if I should 'park my avatar' somewhere in particular before logging off, as I didn't have a home or anything yet.

They thought this very funny, of course.

Well, in MUDs and Mucks when you disconnect your character stays there, "asleep". Some people script their descriptions so when they're asleep it'll show them curled up, snoozing, or sprawled out drunk, depending on whether they want to be cute or funny.

In most places sleeping characters are regularly "swept home", and if they have no home that sweeps them to a virtual non-space where they can't be seen. You can also sweep characters manually... in some places anyone can "sweep" and in others only the owner of the place can.

Some characters have scripts that activate when they're swept and walk them out muttering about being "woken up", or fighting back against the broom.

It's not creepy at all.
