Not a very heavily important thread but ... how tall are you? I am 5 feet 4 inches and being dwarfed by a huge influx of giants. I met someone (quite dishy actually) who was - he claimed - 9 feet 4 inches. Is that possible? Why do people choose to be taller here? I am happy with my height, as a woman. Is the population of sl growing taller as we improve our nutritional input of cybervitamins? Is there a height limit? My figure is mine in real so never tried to stretch. So - heights please! Oh, and where do I get a yardstick?

My SL Height slider is set at 70. I don't know what that translates into.

5'2" here and proud. Especially since in RL, I'm only 5'. In SL, I've allowed myself to be taller, woohoo! I'm totally dwarfed by everyone. I dance with partners, and my feet are high in the air, swinging around at their knees. I'm a complete pixie in comparison and even adopted that persona for the longest time (still enjoy it occassionally). I created a different version of myself at one point, somewhat taller but I don't like her at all. Recently, I had a discussion with my BF about going a bit taller and him going a bit shorter but in the end, we both agreed to stay the same (he's not one of those 9 footers anyway). Plus, I discovered that stillettos and a long gown can really help me a bit for that dancing issue anyway. I'm not really sure why people create themselves as giants. Perhaps they have no sense of scale? It's the only thing I can come up with. Or they have inferiority complexes in RL and this is their way of compensating

There have been numerous reasons cited over the years for why people are taller and bigger in SL. It was even mentioned that for female avatars, going taller enabled more proportionate features at joints and possibly breasts.. It was a long time ago and I don't remember, but all those conversations are to be found in RA somewhere.. some set of observations were made at the outset of content creation in Second Life, and people quickly began to be.. and build.. larger than life. I know this is a complete non-answer, and I'm sorry.
ETA: If Chosen Few still lurks around here.. I recall she had plenty of interesting observations about this..

I reckon it's because the default av is kinda largish, and when people first join and then set their appearance, they only concern themselves with height/length sliders insofar as proportion-vs-other-body-parts goes, without paying much attention to the feet'inches" count of their av.

I've always considered my av kinda short-ish for a male. Usually, when standing around chatting with other avs (both male and female), I've generally found myself either the shortest of the group, or nearly so (edited to add: except when hanging around Mari and her friends LOL). This thread got me to wondering, because I can't remember I ever checked my height. Just rezzed a prim and found that I'm 2.1 m tall (6' 11" . Popping over to another location and touching one of the height detectors (not the forum cartel), it says I'm 6' 4" tall with my shoes on. I'm currently wearing hiking boots with an approximate 2" lift, so that puts me, more or less, at about 6' 9" real height, 6' 2" by detector height. Thinking back, now, I believe I did set my height to approximate my RL height (6' 2" using a height detector, so I guess that's how I settled on my current size.

It just occurred to me that perhaps it's because many people dont actually MAKE their own shapes but prefer to buy a ready-made. Making a personalized shape is very important, I think. My hips are my hips and my breasts are my breasts. My face is as close as I can get. Bought bodies can be highly stylized.

Just checked, out of curiousity. With all sliders affecting height maxed out, I was 8' 6" tall by the prim method. Didn't go check via height detector, but I'm sure it would have been around 8' even.
Forgot that you can adjust the "shoes" for additional perceived height. Doing that, I was nearly 9' tall via prim method.

For some reason I always land at the cartel naked - to ... errrr ... measure myself - so I go at odd times of the day. I am not really a cartelly type of person but I love the measuring stick.

From: Ty Gabe ... This thread got me to wondering, because I can't remember I ever checked my height. Just rezzed a prim and found that I'm 2.1 m tall (6' 11" . Popping over to another location and touching one of the height detectors (not the forum cartel), it says I'm 6' 4" tall with my shoes on. .... The height gadgets found around SL only measure to roughly eye-level as I believe they use a script function to get the value and that is how the function works. So for true height, you need to rez a prim and use that. I tried a lot of the freebie shapes until I found one that seemed mostly right and then modified that to be more to my liking. I think I was more concerned with overall body shape/proportion and face shape than with height. I then tweaked my height more by seeing how I compared to others I was around. The bad thing about being too short in SL is sitting on furniture -- it is pretty much all sized for giants. I have not checked one of those height prims in a while, but I *think* I am roughly 6'2" in SL -- only 5' 7" in RL.

From: Toy LaFollette Im shrinking, started SL at 3'10" Im now 3'9" hehe Me too. In fact, when i first first started, I was 6' something, til I found my first height thing and readjusted to a 5' 7" figure who seemed much smaller than those about. From there, though, it was down to less than 4' level. Good to see ya at camp, Toy! Mari

From: Toy LaFollette Ive always checked mine at NCI since I dont know if the forum hangout is a place for child avs hehe Toy - we keep the Hangout pretty tame during the day and early evening hours - sort of an unwritten rule is to stay PG until at least 6 pm, but many nights it is PG pretty much all night. Dakota and Mari have both been there and can tell you. Feel free to stop by.

I am 6'4 now(taller with the boots heh). I use to be 5'9 and felt the whole SLworld was towering over me. I am 5'7 in RL.

The forum measurer puts me at 1.626102 metres or 5 feet 4 inches Thanks Cerise for the yardstick - a yardstick! I kinda meant a machine that actually I can put in my home to measure myself. Lol. When I just visited the Cartel place I put on a pair of jeans. But no one was there anyway.

The height of avatars has a lot to do with the way the camera works.
Because of the behaviour when inside, bouncing off walls etc, the builds needed to be 'roomy' enough to avoid that happening, so.... it stands to reason we make our avatars to fit our surroundings.

I am one of the RL==SL height set, and went with 5'6" by the NCI height thingee when I started out. But I don't remember you being THAT tall! Of course, we're usually on horseback when we run into each other.

I think my prim height bar is still rezzed out on the porch too. Since scripts really only give eye level for camera scripting reasons, they're not the best reference when building to scale. (^_^)
Heh... Toy... Trust me... The hangout is super tame and more kid friendly than anyone says it is. If you'd seen my history of Friday night NCI beach party outfits, you'd have second guesses about that place too. (^_^)y

I was the smallest possible but over time I have grown taller because there somethings that just don't work well when your avatar is small or extremely small. I am now in medium range little taller maybe 5'8

I'm 5ft 7 sl & 5ft 6.5 rl, I made it as close as I could get, which makes me a midget here & averege rl. I kinda like being the odd one out & not being like the rest, to me I look normal but I admit I was suprised when I saw someone else my size how small they seemed. Still, mostly people accept me as I am there are a few tossers but I like being short =)

There is no real point in making our avatars RL-sized. In RL, over 6' begins to get freakish. In SL, under 6' is the same sort of territory, unless you're a kid or non-human.
If must be my RL height then - can't fly, TP, Rezz, IM without a cell phone, etc.
