The technical description of spam is UBE (Unsolicited Bulk Email)
This has been extended in most jurisdictions to Unsolicited Bulk Electronic Messaging.

Some jurisdictions have a concept of UCE (Unsolicited Commercial Email) - and Messaging.

An IM and/or notecard from one resident to a neighbour concerning a neighbourhood issue can in no way be interpreted as spam.

The people who are using banlines are doing "nothing wrong" only in that they are not contravening the TOS - unless they are ad-farmers.

They are doing wrong to their neighbours however. It is a cop-out to say that the issue has to be resolved by LL.
We all know that LL are pathetic at fixing all sorts of problems. Until LL do the decent thing, we have to live together with an awareness of the effect of out choices on others.

Until LL find and implement a solution that addresses privacy concerns (whether 'physical' or cam-based) , it remains that the setting of ban lines is a huge imposition on the spaces outside of the parcel.
Anyone who opts to impose that visual blight on the outside is behaving in an extremely selfish and inconsiderate manner.

Bullshit

I do so love a cogently-presented case. ;)

That's a whole other discussion though.

The fact is, if there is a functionality present in the game, then people are doing no wrong by using it. Someone who choses to prevent access to their land is perfectly right to do so.

It is upto LL to change how the lines are rendered. You can talk about what you think is right and wrong all you like, but complaining about how much you dislike people who choose banlines won't get them changed. Asking LL to change how they are rendered might (probably won't, but you've got more chance than if you pursue your current strategy of whining). What works is more important than what's right.

LOL, in my previous sim theres a mall owner who has banlines for everyone on all hs empty parcels around his mall he uses for prims, was like that for 2 years and refused to take them down. He can't seem to work out how traffic from the road has a problem getting to his mall.

OH!
Me bows down in your sacred presence. We are UNWORTHY to even contact you about anything!!
Jazus Lady - get a grip. Warbluster is not Gor.

Yanno, I'm really starting to be glad I distanced myself from Gor on SL. Initially it was due to meeting my partner (non-Gorean) and not having time to participate in both worlds. Then I was "spammed" (according to Conan's definition  ) by my former home with daily IM's guilt-tripping me for not being there all the time, when we tried to visit as much as we could.

As anyone knows who's followed the forums in the last year, when the Gor-bashing starts, I'm in there defending (the sane elements) of SL Gor. I still have several great friends I met on Gorean sims who I enjoy. But the kind of attitude in the referenced quote makes me see why many on SL disdain Gor.

What is is about Warbluster sim??
We had one card-carrying freakoid with an overblown delusion of her own importance in the past. She departed the scene following abysmal failure of her project - entirely due to her self-inflicted drama.
Now it seems there a new queen on the block.

Got me, Sling. Most of the sim is for sale and when I'm online there are at most 3 people on the sim at any one time. It's generally very quiet and peaceful. On the plus side there is a couple who are great people and have lived on the sim since when you were there. Before the new rules re: for sale signs, they put a fence with an alpha texture around their land so it still looked nice but kept them from having to view spinning signs. Now they are removing the sides of the fence where the view is decent again. So, there *are* some nice peeps around ;)

It is possible that you misunderstood my "Warbluster is not Gor".
What I meant that it can be proper RP to behave in Gor as your Warbluster neighbour has posted above.
Outside of RP in Gor, even in OOC in Gor, her attitude is ridiculous.

I actually RP sometimes in Gor -- as a panther.
In my experience, anyone saying something like "You are quite presumptive and immature to think you had a right to even contact me about anything," in OOC would be laughed at best and banned at worst.

Panthers kick ass!!!

None of this thread was about Gor. This thread was about two people who own a tiny plot on a sim that Czari owns land on as well and red ban lines that the Lindens have programmed Second Life to display when you restrict land access on the land you own. That is all this was about. This was also about Czari using a public forum to make her point with high drama, rather than keep it private. That was her choice, she evidently needed emotional support for her position. Something I don't need. I don't give a rats behind what anyone's opinion is about my restricting land access on land I paid for. If you ain't paying my tier then your opinion is mute. I am not breaking terms of service I am not doing anything wrong. Czari wants to get on a soap box, she can do it as is quite evident by her bringing a private issue to this forum.

So enjoy your little debate. No ones opinion regarding how I handle my land makes any difference to me. Our plot isn't commercial, its a tiny landing point and home spot. Czari prefers to land up in the sky so she isn't likely to be running into me nor I into her. So please feel free to continue wasting your time debating a mute subject.

Its a waste of time. You know what they say about opinions....they are like...oh well never mind. :p

No Entry Lines are Ugly
11-15-2008 16:49
I'm a new landowner in SL, and recently purchased land on one of the Nautilus sims. The other day, I placed a tree on my lot, but, because the tree is sort of flexi, the SL wind blew the top of the tree into my neighbor's land boundary. He, not so politely, demanded that I remove the tree. I didn't know whether the tree was technically in or out of bounds, but, to be neighborly, I removed it as soon as I received his message. Several hours later, the neighbor added me to the Banned List on his land's Access panel, but kept access to the general public open. I thought it was kind of weird. Now, because our lots are adjacent to each other, and only 1024 sqm, it's rather close quarters. Since he added me, all I have on one side of my property is the sight of the ugly, flashing "No Entry" lines. I've asked him to remove me from the list, but he has chosen to ignore my requests. So, I guess that's how it is in SL. Oh well.....

You sooooo remind me of your predecessor Witch of Warbluster!!

In the end her own drama caught up with her.

I think that some of those who put up ban lines are only doing it because they can. It gives them a sense of importance and control that they don't have in RL.

*If* someone genuinely needs to keep others out because of a pattern of abuse, then they have a number of option.
Nobody is forced to use ban lines. People choose to use them.
Choosing to put up ban lines in the knowledge of the visual effects outside is the action of a sociopathic mindset.

Nooooooo, Sling...I wasn't referring to you. :) I appreciated your post/s and understood what you meant by "Warbluster is not Gor" as a comment to Avalon based on her "You don't have the right to talk to me" comment. I'm sorry you thought I meant I was addressing that to you. That comment *would* be proper from a FW addressing a slave in a rp situation (which of course is one reason Norman writes about slaves fearing FW), but I agree - telling me as another inhabitant of a non-rp sim I didn't have the "right to talk to her was totally ludicrous...lol.

My comment about starting to be glad I'm out of Gor and understanding why people who have never rp'd Gor have a bad taste for it was also based on that comment.

Oh cool! I didn't know that :) Of the friends I mentioned that I still enjoy from Gor - two are Panthers! One has been trying to get me to join her tribe forever, but I'm a city girl *grins*

That gave me a good chuckle, foehn! This plot is also a 512 and all I see on it is bare ground with some kind of rectangular structure I'm assuming is a "house" that is textured in grass. Would be kind of cute in a fantasy sim or if hobbits were living there but doesn't seem quite the Gorean style. Granted they may have something higher in the sky, but then why need banlines. With these two I think it's more like they might want to be doing "private" things...errr...if someone "really" cares that much about peeping, guess they haven't heard about camming. *shakes head*

hehehe Hey Czari, the 512ers finally learned their freeb house has privacy windows!
I never see them, wrg time zone, but it's still funny to see their little "Fort Knox" w/ the radioactive blast protected windows.

Avalon, you're the one picking a fight here. So what if Czari hates banlines as a matter of principle? You and she resolved your individual issue. Why do you have to make it a bigger situation? What difference does it make *why* she hates it?

The recommendation for anyone to put up banlines in response to a person who puts theirs up is because those who don't listen, feel. Typically it is a newbie and when they discover that they don't like having the ugly things right back at them, it invites a meeting of the minds. But as Czari explained, she couldn't find the owner to talk to them, so up they went.

Anyway, for those of us that actually use the ground and try to make it nice, no object entry, no push, no script, and no build is usually sufficient to stop 99% of griefing.

Except, you don't have your facts straight. Czari's ban lines went up the same day she had heard from me. She just didn't like my opinion or response. That's her perogative. She can put the ban lines back up, they don't bother me a bit.

...and then we came to a resolution when you first posted on this thread. You added me to your access list and i took you off my ban list. All was well, until my response to another poster. I admit my reply post to him was snippy, but the post hit me wrong. Perhaps I misinterpreted it but based on that post to someone else you started the whole issue up again and began name-calling.

My response to that ended with:

From: Czari Zenovka
At any rate, I know that I tried to do the right thing. You believe I didn't. I'm not going to continue this matter any further. I did really appreciate your former post and adding me to your access list. If you choose to reverse that, it is your prerogative. I will not put you on my ban list and you are most welcome on my property.

Last time I went in world I was back off your access list but you are no longer on my ban list and won't be and the above quote I made stands.

Just wanted to include a few facts that were left out.

I think she just wants to be left alone.
Ban lines do very little to keep you "left alone". They attract attention to your parcel, and provide no protection against people camming in and watching what you're doing. Out of the half dozen parcels in Noonkkot with ban lines still up, only two have any occupied construction at ground level... the rest have wide open skyboxes... apparently under the misapprehension that access controls protect them.

http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-2390

This would (a) draw property-owner's attention to the fact that ban lines do not normally protect skyboxes, and (b) provide the option of putting the access controls around the objects they want to control access to while leaving the ground level open.

That's a whole other discussion though.

The fact is, if there is a functionality present in the game, then people are doing no wrong by using it.
That's a silly argument. There's all kinds of functionality present in the game that people are "doing wrong" by using.Particle bombs, noise bombs, spam boxes, pyramid schemes, all of them are using "functionality present in the game". You can get suspended and even banned for using them.
