Did anyone else have their Facebook account deleted. The reasoning was I misrepresented myself and I didn't use my real name. There were thousands of SL avies on there, Lindens included as well as groups. Is everyone gone now?

I thought (could be wrong) that you had to have your SL av name, as a 'SL Connection' to your real FB page/name. I"ve seen, on my rl FB page, the offer to add my 'SL Connection' to it, and that's the only way they'd allow the fake name. So if people are making FB pages without doing it that way, for their SL avs, maybe that's why they deleted?

This is both silly, and scary.

On the one hand, yes, FaceBook has this policy that you're supposed to only put real stuff about you on their site. They've deleted SL avatar accounts in the past, just as they did yours.

On the other hand, Linden Lab is pursuing a closer relationship with FaceBook (and with Twitter).

That's what is silly. The scary part comes when you think about one of the things LL has in the works for "better social networking tools": The option to use your real name in SL. This has two really frightening possibilities. What is now an option may become, at some point, a requirement. And even if it does not, we will see the same polarization betwen the community of people who want to use their RL identities, and who want to make everyone else do the same...and those of us who prefer to keep our SL and our RL separated. It will be even worse than the introduction of voice.

Treasure-
I didn't ever see that option. I keep my SL separate because I use that name for my art. It is my alter ego not a fake name. Do celebrities have to use their real names? It doesn't seem right that they pick and choose. Oh well.

Too true. And the fissure, when it develops, will be both along the same lines, and at the same time much deeper, than that which was created by the introduction of voice.

This is why I do not have a Facebook account for my avatar. Eventually it will get linked to my real account and will destroy what little fantasy I have here.

How does Facebook know whether your name is real or not? I can see in the case of obvious false fake names, but when you sign up, it asks for a first and last name. How can they tell you aren't using your RL name?

I have a FB account for my SL name, and it's still up there and there is nothing linking it to RL me.

I think if they see you logging in with two different accounts that don't have the same name, they may suspect that one isn't your real name.

do you have a RL FB page also? If so, probably they just haven't caught up to you yet.

Maybe. I don't have an account for RL me, so I guess that isn't a worry. But even so, if you don't connect the 2 in some way, how can they tell?

No, I don't. *shudders* Having an SL page has given me the benfit of trying it out and no way would I put any RL info up on that place.

Maybe using the computer's IP address? Except that would mean that you couldn't have two different people using the same computer for their different accounts . . .

I had a friend who used a picture of a cat on her FB profile page, and it was deleted. She was able to get it reinstated by proving that she was a real person (not a real cat), but I'm wondering if that is how they do it: on the basis of profile pics?

Well that's why then, cause there is only one 'you' logging in to your one account. I really think there's more going on there, than just IP addresses, but haven't put my finger on it yet, just what it is they're doing to determine that the name is not real, how they are hooking it up. Cause, IP's can change, and as Scylla said, if you are sharing a computer with a household member, can't prove it that way either, so there has to be something else they're doing........

So, they never heard of married couples who share a computer and both use Facebook?

Who knows?

A celebrity will usually have some legal paperwork to back up their "public name". Either they legally change their name to what they are known as in public, or they register a "Doing Business As" pseudonym with local tax authorities. For example, I have a DBA on file as "Ceera Murakami" and as "Fox and Ground Construction Company". Fox and Ground has a bank account (after showing my DBA paperwork to my bank and opening the business account) and I can cash checks made out to either name, and can sign legally-binding contracts as Ceera.

So if I really wanted to, I could create a Facebook account for Ceera, since I can demonstrate that the name is legally mine to use. But I think Facebook would probably still balk at the idea, if I posted a personal photo of my anthro fox avatar. *smirk*

Personally, I refuse to put my personal details out on Facebook or any other social networking site, and I refuse to link my SL accounts in any widely publicly accessible way to my real name information.

Facebook is seriously not a suitable partner for Linden Lab, they need to stop any silly links until Facebook allow SL avatar names that aren't linked to the RL facebook profile but as Facebook don't seem to give a flying fig about concepts like that I won't hold my breath waiting.

Wow. I don't have an RL FB account, just an SL one (like you). I've had it for a few months, I guess, and have exactly one (1) friend, also an SL friend (although it's her RL account she uses). I have never been contacted by anyone through FB . . .

So, what am I doing . . . right? :p

If someone could google your RL name and connect it to your SL profile, then some people might think twice about some of the groups they belong to. Personally, I'd prefer my co-workers or future clients didn't know I had some kinkier interests in my private life.

I am on FB, in real, for one reason only. Being the president of a deaf group (not SL related) that has a FB presence. Now, in order to have such a group on FB, you have to also get a personal page. That personal page they forced me to get, is locked down. I have no friends, no nothing on it, it exists only to allow me access to the group. When I get friend requests, pokes and such from family and other friends who have searched for me there, I email them and explained why I"ve declined their friend request. I don't know, I just have no interest.
