Ever since I downloaded Windlight, I was hoping the Avatar shading was going to be better, but Linden Lab still uses the shadows that are on the terrain for face shadows, instead of creating better looking soft shadows for the face. The worst part - Facelights no longer work on Windlight either, and the client is extremely unstable as well. It can't even remember the size and location of the mini-map during each login. Well, /rantoff EDIT: Jira Issue Created: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-6425

"Windlight made my Avatar Ugly."
Do you consider it an improvement?
Oh, you're unhappy with it. Ok, I see now.

Ummm, facelights DO work under windlight. People with stability problems should consider upgrading to the new 'dazzle' client from the test software webpage. It has a number of improvements in stability and performance. Also consider checking very carefully your graphics settings (use the recommended hardware settings button) This should also help.

From: Soap Clawtooth Ummm, facelights DO work under windlight. You know, they don't with any consistancy. Some places mine work, other places it's bupkus. It's becoming a bit of an obsession, checking my face light to see if it came off in a TP, or is just AWOL for no reason. And without one, I look like the walking dead. Does any one have any suggestion for Graphics Setting to get out of this conundrum? I tweak and tweak, but it's all a muddle, and nothing seems to work all the time. I love the water in Windlight, and tend to stand looking at it all the time. But my face? Ugh.

I am endlessly irked by light and shadows in any viewer, too. Midday makes me look like Ruth, Sunrise turns me bright orange, Sunset is just dreary and Midnight is utter darkness.
But, in the end, it hardly matters how pretty your avatar looks in YOUR viewer. Unless you're an absolutely narcissist, you'd probably want other people to think it's nice, too. While your video card has a great deal to do with how your image is presented to others, THEIR settings affect your overall look, as well. Certainly, I'd imagine a lot of folks have local lights turned off to save resources and all the facelights in the world aren't going to help you then.

The problem with that is that the face will look fine to the person, but will still look bad to everyone else (who hasn't made the same changes).

Brendan, I had the same problem when I first updated. Face light does work but you are going to have to work with the custom sliders. Please see this thread for further info on how to do that--- /327/f4/251062/1.html

And here we are again, discussing the shifting shape of reality....
FWIW, changing my settings a la Soigné article did help a lot, and Aebleskiver looks much better. How this translates to the rest of the world, I dunno, but at least now I don't have to be reminded of her recent death every time I look at her, and that's worth a lot. I can forget about it, and get back to (Second) Life.
Thanks! Now, does anyone know of a RL Forum like this, where I can get all my RL problems fixed?

I do keep local lights turned off, to many people abuse them, and I think theres a limit on the sources in the newer clients as well.

From: Aebleskiver Thibedeau Does any one have any suggestion for Graphics Setting to get out of this conundrum? Learn to live without one, you might have little choice soon. From: someone BigPapi Linden shouts: Also, let me quickly address face and body lights. BigPapi Linden shouts: They do not work for everybody right now, and they often break content for builders (there are only 6 dynamic lights to go around in the scene) BigPapi Linden shouts: You should NOT be using face or body lights period and they may get prioritized AFTER scene lights in the future. If they change it, scene lights will take priority over face/body lights in which case if there are 6 scene lights nearby you, your facelight simply won't light at all (it's pretty much the other way around now).

They sure do. Perhaps too well. I can always tell the people who use em, cuz they look sooo washed out. Like one of the old Nagel paintings.
[QUOTE[It can't even remember the size and location of the mini-map during each login. I've never seen that. Is it a Dazzle client bug? From: Wingnut Pratt I do keep local lights turned off, to many people abuse them, and I think theres a limit on the sources in the newer clients as well. Six local sources. Same as the lighting system has been since introduction in 1.10. Mari

From: Lindal Kidd /me shouts, "And revise the avatar mesh to look better!!" I personally like this idea.... but I'm gonna direct every content creator who has to re-do every product they make -- because a new avvie mesh breaks it -- to your doorstep. 'cuz if you thought complaints about WL lighting could get harsh well, you ain't heard nuttin yet. Mari

From: Colette Meiji what response did you get to that? About what you'd expect...Lindens sticking their fingers in their ears and going, "Lalala, I can't hear you!"

Its not the pictures you can take with windlight that are the issue. Its how you look when you aren't setting up a picture. It was entirely possible for the old lighting to make you look bad, but you could still correct it for photos. Thats why a lot of people got facelights in the old viewer they were tired of having to change it to sunrise/sunset and stand with their face facing the sun. Windlight just exaggerates this contrast.
