Nevertheless, given the process as I described it above, your original post strongly suggests that those names could easily have been lost. The fact that Brianna was successful in acquiring one of the names you considered simply suggests that either her experience or mine is an anomaly - and I believe she just got lucky.

If you search in world, (which I did using your previous posts as my guide) you will find a mary Underby and a Gerry Underby. Mary Writer is a heritage name, so you had no chance a few weeks ago of ever getting that name. I did not find Mr Underby in world, so you might be able to get that today.

Science is based on the ability to replicate a problem and not just our personal experiences. I'd say my ability to find a Gerry Underby (which coincidently or not was born on 3/7/09) shows that your case was not just the anomoly, but more than likely an error on the users part.

It is not enough under the new system to find the server that contains your desired last name. One must also cycle through several times until the desired last name appears.

And if you are indecisive and change the first name and loose the last name, you must then use alternating first names to cycle through again until the name reappears. This process can take a dozen or so attempts on your part before you can select (or reselect) the desired last name.

That's not just based on a single experience. I've been able to replicate this on more than one occasion recently.

This has been my experience as well, but there are other options to get that name as well...

This was taken 10 minutes ago using the Zinnemann reg api. The names bounce around all the time between the different reg api's... NOW it's on a different one, but is still available.
I could have easily forced a registration of the name he wanted here (since it's not a used name according to the SL registration server).

This is exactly why SL name Watch is such an invaluable asset

I wasn't trying to make it easy for him!

He should have to sit there for 10 minutes cycling through the last names after flaming people over his own inexperience! ;)

I think you misunderstood. The Mary/Gerry/Mary Writer examples I mentioned in the other thread were hypothetical, which is to say they were invented solely as illustrations to the point I made: the question of whether or not they actually are available is irrelevant.

The Mr Underby example I quoted above is from my experience and I repeated yesterday's test again today. The name has not been taken and it is no longer available.

Considering the inexperience of a newbie registering for the first time, the interface should not behave this way, nor should it be necessary to go elsewhere to acquire a name. And the jpeg illustration the OP linked above may show the name 'Underby' but it does not show the first name, which of course should be 'Mr'.

The point you're missing is ONLY the official LL portal needs to have the first name in before you can click the button to see the list of the last names. These other ones you get all the last names in a dropdown reguardless of what's in any of the boxes.

Ok dood..
Step one, log out
Step two, clear browser cache
Step three, go to the SL join site
Step four, put in your desired name
Step five, keep refreshing the last names list by editing the first name each time you look in it... maybe try a different spelling of Mr once or twice.

If you do that just like I say.....
You'll see this....

Full size, so you can see the name is plainly still available on the LL reg portal.
There's no doubt whatsoever that it's the browser cache holding your selection.
You didn't clear the right thing before trying again.

Some people choose to remain newbies. For the others, there is enough information in this thread to easily get the name you want if it's available.

Basically, yes. All the non-official, foreign language and other special interest landing zones are run by groups independent of Linden Lab, and a lot of them have Orientation processes much better than the "official" one.

The one I think is absolutely by far the best, and the one I will recommend to anyone who had an incomplete or unhelpful experience in the official orientation, is the one by Virtual Ability.

slurl= http://slurl.com/secondlife/Virtual%20Ability/128/127/23

Careful though - I used the Emerald name-finder to create this alt and it registered me as an american without asking.

So I can't buy Linden's from the viewer because it only asks for an american address for the crdit card - and I can't find a way to change that.

I have to buy Linden's with my main and pass them over.

Feel free to google Gerrard Winstanley, by the way, I'm 400 yrs old ... and mostly RP in character.

Oh i go wandering - hippy hang-outs mostly - and the campfire on New Desperation Isle is always good for slipping a few apposite quotes into the conversation.

I've even got laid a couple of times - which considering I'm an grey-haired gentleman with a walking stick is not bad going.

Ah. For a moment there, I thought there was a seventeenth-century sim somewhere I'd missed. What's at New Desperation Isle?

Tsk! What would Quaker fellow-travellers say about THAT?

(Mind you, they did used to show up at church services naked sometimes, didn't they?)

No - I RP an accidental time-traveller. Although if you find an English Revolution sim, do let me know.

Some of the most amusing conversation and repartee I've found in SL - humans, furries, beasts and aliens mixing it up in local chat. A very tolerant and broad-minded place.

Actually the quakers pioneered religious sexual tolerance - http://www.religioustolerance.org/hom_quak.htm

And naturism too - http://blog.virtuemag.org/2006/10/14/christian-nudist-community-not-going-over-so-well/

Neither did Lindal; she deleted it.
