Ok gang.....I'm gonna pose this to you guys because lets face it....this group is full of techno savy web users. Big article today on the hazards of Internet Explorer. I know there's been glitches in the past......but thus far I've never had a problem with explorer. I don't stay logged in to any web sites....always have to type my passwords. And....I use CCleaner on a pretty regular basis to eliminate cookies and other fodder collected. But.....what are your thoughts, opinions...experiences with other browsers? My fiance uses Mozilla on his laptop....and I don't really like it because it blocks a LOT of stuff....in fact I can't even reply to email in my hotmail account using Mozilla. But, that said, I've heard it's also much safer. I change my SL password every so often.....but given the amount of info on an SL account.....does anyone recommend a different browser for safety? The other reason I'm asking this now....is over the past couple days my brwoser has been freezing up.....locking up when I close it, so that I have to ctrl-alt-delete......this is new......I cleaned everything up and it seems to be ok now....but still.....it has me wondering if I should switch browsers. I'm on a Dell....WindowsXP..... no real problems with connectivity and speed and so on......but some solid wisdom here would be mucho appreciated.

Firefox allows you control, Chrome is *really* fast. Pep (IE has neither of those characteristics)

I'd say that locking up freezing behavior would cause me to go to the majorgeeks malware removal obstacle course, because whatever you're using seems to have left something behind. This will zap just about all the undesirables and there are instructions how to proceed should you need one of their experts to help with any stubborn ones hanging around: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407as to browser, I love firefox. It's very adjustable, so maybe you could set yours differently than your mate's

People still use IE? (O.o)
As long as I can remember, I've been using Nescape/Mozilla/Firefox and lately I've been pressuring myself to get used to Google Chrome. (^_^)
I always viewed IE as some sort of scheme by Microsoft to make the internet proprietary. So far, the ONLY reason I use it is to connect to the remote Email server my company has... Because, well... It has a lot or proprietary code that only woks in IE... My suspicions are correct. (T_T)

I still use IE6 and like it. I also use Firefox and like it as well. I have them configed differently for doing different things. No Flash on IE, for example. I never cared for Nutscrape, but it's more of a personal taste issue and I do leave it on the Solaris machines I use at work.
Believe it or not, Firefox has many more security flaws than IE, but since IE still has far and away the majority of the web browser market, that's what you want your malicious web tools to find and exploit unpatched problems.
Microsoft will have a patch for IE today through auto-update if it's not out already.

IE is the most used browser by a very long way. As such, it is the standard browser and is likely to remain so for some time yet - at least. The security safety in other browsers isn't because they are more secure, but because they are minority browsers that are not worth attacking when compared to IE.
The current IE security scare is very concerning though. Apparently, it starts by infecting websites and the website owners are blissfully ignorant of the infection. Visting an infected site can cause nasty stuff to be dowloaded and all that I can find from Microsoft so far is to set the Internet zone to high security and disable something else that I haven't managed to find.
I'm a die-hard IE user - not because it's better than the others but because it's by far the most used one, and it's real pain to make websites suit the various display characteristics of more than one browser - and even I'm concerned about the current attack.

On Firefox under tools then options you should be able to adjust your pop up window preferences among other preferences. It's pretty self explanatory as how to adjust to your preferences. I agree that is sounds like you have some kind of virus/malware/trojans that you need to clear up.

Personally, I use FireFox.
Although, I can't play Youtube videos on it because Vista is stupid.

I think it may now be IE7 specific but other IE versions were vulnerable until MS fixed them in an update. That's if my memory is correct. It's not just viruses than can be downloaded though. Anything can be downloaded via the exploit, including keyloggers. Apparently it started in China and was used to acquire games passwords, which are saleable, but it can be used for anything.

I do wonder each time I have to clean out a friend's computer of malware... if it's all secretly created by MS in order to gunk up people's machines and sell them a new one.

MS doesn't sell computers, what would be the point in that for them? I've used IE exclusively since I bought my first computer in 2000. I've never had any problems, I take the usual precautions and do the routine maintenance. I'm not a power user of any sort, I don't see any reason to switch.

Get a Mac for porn surfing.
Keep your browser & OS updated and avoid clicking on horrible links that ask you to do stupid things and whatever browser you use will be as safe as can be expected.
I use IE, Firefox and Safari, and they all do what they're supposed to (show me the internet) in a mostly trouble free manner.
Netscape has a 20% market share? Maybe it did in 1998. It's more like 0% now.

Thanks gang!!! I don't visit porn sites...so I guess that puts me in a slightly safer mode..... but I'm going to look into other browsers too. My fiance has issues with IE but he also tends to be overly dramatic and paranoid about things.

I know this is going off-topic, but.....
Somebody touched on something earlier that's a huge problem. Not only with Micro$oft, but also Apple, with their browser alternative, Opera, Netscape, Firefox, all browsers really.
Cross-browser compatibility.
There is a body already in place to determine standards. It's called the World Wide Web Consortium, or W3C for short. If everybody writing browser code would actually make them W3C compliant, and website creators would only use W3C compliant code, there'd be no reason to be forced to use IE for certain websites, or find websites that just plain won't work with a specific browser.
What's the point of defined standards if nobody cares?

I've always (always = years and years and years) used IE and have never caught any nastyware from it..
Virtually all of these exploits require you to either download infected software or visit a malicious site. If you don't do those things, you probably won't run into problems.

Not in his case necessarily, but in general.
