I've updated my "Sansara & Heterocera Atoll" map. I think this will be the last major update for a while, unless I get some some really interesting new suggestions. Though, I'm sure I will think of something else once I post these Fixes Corrected "Sansara SLRR" to "GSLR". Minor positioning corrections. Added ASL (Academy of Second Learning) as a New Player Help Area. Route and stations for the SLRR on Heterocer Atoll. Imperial Forest as a Point of Interest. I've also made a minor update to my older "Linden Lab Mainland Continents" map, so it's typeface matches the "Sansara & Heterocera Atoll" map. Finally--I think I have inword distribution working. I've put these maps on a Kiosk.net system. If you click on any of the maps posted at NCI Kuula, NCI South, NCI Beach, or NCI Caledon, you will get an object which is a kiosk identical to the one you clicked. That way, your map will update automatically when future changes are made. Again--I think I've got this working If I don't, I'll tell everyone and you can all delete your maps and start over. If you have to have a static copy, please don't use the ones here. The ImageShack optimization process makes the JPEGs look really bad on the "Sansara & Heterocera Atoll". I''m still happy to hand out 1024x1024 TGAs in world (or by email jch@carlhenderson.net ), but I'd rather people use the self-updating prim maps. Anything else here need mapping?

Ditto, thank you! These are great! They bring up memories of the old Mainland for me too.

Carl, these are great. You are just the coolest as far as I'm concerned. I am definitely going to pick up the kiosk versions for my place.

I'm going to summon every last shred of my arrogance, presumptuousness and sheer nerve, and propose a 'name' for the so-called un-named continent, thus: Laurentia Why? Because it was considered a sort of 'North America' continent in the past, due to its shape - see the forum thread " Massive Mainland land dump: 200+ unauctioned sims" as a reference. Now modern North America it is certainly not, but if 'North America' might be the vulgate name, Laurentia might be construed to be the 'proper name' for something roughly equivalent - as per this reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurentia My 'reasoning' isn't powerful or tightly linked to strong usage, but from researching historic texts on the issue, it's all I've got. Does anyone have any better research into the matter, or perhaps more a better approach? I'm not married to the name choice or championing it (or any name at all) for a distant continent myself, as I'm from Caledon and we have our proper place names - my needs are met. Submitted to the citizens of the grid, for purpose of debate and discussion. Edited to add: leave it to a Neovictorian to dare name a continent... historic Caledon cartographer Dyne Talamasca already did it when Jeogeot was named! grin

The one thing I love about these maps is that it finally cleared up my confusion when people referred to "the mainland". I kept looking at the map and trying to figure out which was the mainland. Only when these forums popped up was I able to figure out they all are.

Looks fantastic, Carl! One comment.... The "Lost Lakes" Region, (I thought) was the area where the Shelter in Isabel is, with the large lake immediately to the East referred to as Lost Lake, proper. (Based upon information in the SL History Wiki.) As a result, we named the 'Shelter Lost Lake Balloon Tour' after what we thought was Lost Lake. Its probably me that's wrong - it wouldn't be the first time. Can we confirm the actual location of the Lost Lakes Region, and (if there is one) Lost Lake? Again - great work!

Fantastic work, Carl! One comment, however.... If I'm not mistaken, the "Lost Lakes" region, is the area where the Shelter is in Isabel/Wingo (and the surrounding regions). This is at least, according to the SL History Wiki: http://www.slhistory.org/index.php/Lost_LakesWe named the 'Shelter Lost Lake Balloon Tour' off what we thought was Lost Lake (The big lake in the middle, with the Teen Grid Transfer Station in the middle). I could be completely mistaken, of course - wouldn't be the first time Again though - great work on the map!

From: Desmond Shang leave it to a Neovictorian to dare name a continent... historic Caledon cartographer Dyne Talamasca already did it when Jeogeot was named! grin Where ya been, Des? A few of us have been pushing our favorite names everytime one of the "continents" threads rears up, the most recent being: /327/38/211379/1.html(starting somewhere on page 2) Currently on the table (that I remember): - Cristalle: Black Thursday - Dnali: Satori - Bodhi: Boomerangia - and now Desmond: Laurentia Side note: I think Perre's private island sim is also named Laurentia... great mapping minds think alike! Another side note: Do you think maybe we should start a thread solely for naming the nameless continent? (Personally I was hoping LL would tell us their name for it, which a Linden actually said they'd do in a blog post comment back when they announced Corsica. <sigh> Promises, promises... )

We kinda need to collectively give it one, or dig up some more history. I think this may require a 'Torley' moment... anyone want to send up the Torley equivalent of the batsignal? Watermelony shaped of course...

Thanks for the suggestions and compliments.
Travis is correct, it seems. I do have the Lost Lakes region misplaced. I got the positioning information from an earlier map, repeating the error. I'll fix that tonight and put it in the server.
Desmond's suggested name of "Laurentia" is good as are "Satori" and "Boomerangia". However, I think I will leave that continent unamed until LL speaks or some sort of consensus starts to emerge.

Nice maps! Too bad that enormous ocean isn't usable, I'd love to fly or spend a few straight days sailing around all that.

Hrm. I wonder if any of the indigenous people care to speak up? *Someone* here has to primarily live on that... unnamed mass. History, culture, notable events that have happened there... landmarks... anyone? Perhaps it's time we sent a naval science vessel from Caledon... ...light crew, scientist or two, a blogger, a small batallion and some trinkets for the locals we meet... it's been a while since our last forays.

Had I the skill, I would put together a nice promotional machinima for the Boomerangia Tourism and Pie Board.
"Boomerangia Keeps You Coming Back"
Bodhi--From the prettiest sim in the most croissant-shaped continent in SL.
EDIT: Perhaps I'll start focusing my SLUniverse images on the wonders of Boomerangia. Perhaps I can start a movement that influences the Lindens-That-Be to name it thus.

Thank you for the kiosks too! I have them in my little ocean-side bar reduced to 1.1mx1.1m size and framed on the wall. Anyone can touch them and get their own kiosk as well! Beautiful work!

Beautiful work! It's not my work! I can barely script "Hello World!". I'm using the Kiosk.net system by Sasun Steinbeck. It's well worth the 2500L$ price tag! The maps, I can take credit for

Okay--I've updated the "Sansara & Heterocera Atoll" map to fix the incorrect position of the Lost Lakes Region. I've also added a missing SLRR station (Zale) and numbered and given a list of the SLRR stations. As always, you can get them at any NCI location. Or IM me in world for a Kiosk, or (if you have to have one) a non-updating TGA.
