Massive Mainland land dump: 200+ unauctioned sims

Yep. Prices are already low, and LL just put up 20 more for auction... but that's not the end of it. There's a massive 100 sim region not on the map yet on the Eastern part of the new continent, and a bunch more unactioned sims to the north and south. If they dump land in chunkcs (which seems reasonable, because it is enough land to last 25 days at 8 sims per day) expect a huge crash.

Map of all the new sims:
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/2857/newsims2gz9.jpg

Also, it looks like the new continent is sorta the shape of North America so far :) Complete with a little Florida.

Make that 40 sims for auction at once. Last time this happened, prices dropped to almost 6 a meter. But I doubt the brokers will panic like that again. However, it should be an interesting weekend. I feel sorry for the "winners" of tonight's auctions. Especially the winners of the ones that went for well over 3k.

That's an interesting comment. Care to put it in historical perspective, longer than 3 months?

In the fall of 2006 whole sims would sometimes barely get a bid and were going for as low as L$4.2 m2 and usually around L$5 m2. I saw a waterfront sim go for $1800 US and thought the buyer was insane. Back in those days of yore, you could double your money, and fairly quickly.

Dates and the average rate at which I sold land on that day. Of course a lot of this is related to how I decided to price things on that day and that changed over time as I refined my technique.

Elanthius, Rocky -- thank you for the responses.

I think we have established that the original poster's claim of current land "Prices are already low" is not accurate, from a historical perspective.

It will be interesting to see how LL releases new mainland sims in the next week or so -- whether a return to 8 sims per day (as for the past week or so), less, or more.

I wonder whether, like their tight control of maintaining stable L$ exchange rates over recent months, they will also start trying to adjust mainland sim release rates to try to maintain a target L$ / m^2 average land cost, and if so, what cost they would like to maintain.

Of course, land economy can not hope to be as "efficient" as a L$ exchange economy, so there will likely continue to be significant fluctuations.

I think everybody knows it's not going to be 40 sims every day, unlike last time when we had no idea what LL was planning.

I suggested something similar after the LL blog post about prices being too high. They can slow the output of land if prices drop too far (for some definition of too far), however there is an upper bound to how quickly they can release land. Obviously, as land needs servers to run on, they're constrained principally by their supply of hardware, and then by the size of their hosting locations.

Anyone else kicking themselves for not selling when prices were higher? *just shakes her head at herself*

I remember selling off my first parcels of land at a price that is so laughably cheap compared to land prices now that I cringe. I should have learned then...ya sell high, buy low, just like any other market. Good thing I love the land I have or I would really be kicking myself. I cant wait to see what the new prices do and how much money the land barons could possibly be losing from the last months worth of sims purchased

They sell L$ now as the currency strengthens, but will they buy L$ back when the currency weakens? What do you guys think?

Supply Linden has a US$0 buy limit, which means officially at least they can't buy Lindens, only sell them.

Aww, how cute! I'd like to see some regions named after Florida counties.

As far as land prices being low, and putting things into historical perspective - those of you who go on and on about the good ol' days do realize that the majority of people on the grid haven't been around that long, don't you? To some of us, these are low prices.

I didn't have to walk three miles barefoot in the snow to get to a one-room schoolhouse, either. ;)

Still, there are a LOT of unauctioned sims on the map. We're headed south (to Tiny Florida), just not at the speed we got there last time.

A massive mainland dump is good. How the populace handles it is another matter. If the barons, baby barons and wannabe barons keep bidding them all up well over 10L/m2, we have status quo.

Actually, last time they dumped 40 in one go, about 80 had appeared a day or two before.

And yes, I believe this will bring prices down - possibly even down to levels near last time - but it's nowhere near the crash that happened in a space of 5 hours last time.

Of course, if the auctions go for low enough, we might see people or groups buying sims for their own personal use instead of buying an island. Heck, I might even do that. Beats being surrounded by sex shops and/or rotating ads.

That was also something discussed last time. As it turned out though, the lower prices just introduced a new bunch of baby barons who could afford a sim to sell for the first time while the more established operators still had plenty of pre-crash land on their books.

Well, bids are already up over $2,000 on some of them, so someone out there must still have faith.

A week ago, all 8 stayed at US$1001 well into the second day of the auction. It's not rare to see all of the bidding in the last few hours, and even in the last seconds of the auction.

I have a feeling Jasoon Xi is going to pick up all 40 sims at 3k a piece. Maybe prices will actually go UP. ;)

Quick, duck and cover your heads! Here come some more on the auction page! Guess Jasoon better up his credit card limit, eh Raymond?

16 more sims on the auction block tonight so far, unless my Floridian counting skills fail me. I am now convinced that LL is trying very hard to crash the land market.
