From: Annabelle Vandeverre Quick, duck and cover your heads! Here come some more on the auction page! Guess Jasoon better up his credit card limit, eh Raymond?
16 more sims on the auction block tonight so far, unless my Floridian counting skills fail me. I am now convinced that LL is trying very hard to crash the land market. Yeap this is 16 more that will close the next day of those initial 40! I think market will rest above 10/sqm. I don't think it will dip very low below that but you never know.

I think the 16 is just compensating for the fact we didn't get any added to the auctions on Thursday. As for where prices go, it depends if somebody buys a load of the 40 and sells at around cost, doesn't it?

We're already at 10/sqm tonight. I'm thinking more like 8 by tomorrow night when the auctions end. But what the hell do I know other than I'm glad I'm not holding.

With 4 hours to go before the first auction bell it seems alot like the "calm before the shit storm". There may be some bargains to be had tonight on the auction. It will be interesting indeed.

late nite ramblings on the notions of a land dump
03-18-2007 19:21
Opportunity knocks, somebody opens the door to take advantage of the situation, and if they are lucky they get out before the door slams shut on their head splattering their brains all over the wall. Situations came about which made the uninformed think that buying land at whacked out prices was a reasonable thing to do. They didnt know any better. And there were those who took advantage of those folks by selling land at those prices. But sooner or later six trailer trucks of servers shows up at LL from Hewlitt Packard or somewhere and suddenly land is no longer scarce. Theres so much availability that the auction hogs cant keep up or artificially maintain those bloated prices. I look forward to seeing land made available at reasonable prices so that the common man or woman can afford a place to call thier own. Nobody wants to blow a weeks real life rent on some artificial pixel turf. This is supposed to be fun.

Just be aware that the price drop, although inevitable, will be temporary. There are also truckloads of baby barons showing up weekly. So take advantage of cheap land while you can.

Cheap land.... right...
4 more sims on the block, Linden clearly can't sustain the flow of sims. Prices are creeping up to the 2k mark and above...

If you are going to complain about the price of land now, then I give up arguing.
You want it to be back at the prices they were when there were 3K concurrent users online. But there were 40K concurrent on today. Prices will never go back to where they were and where you wish they would return. Yes, the prices you see over the next few days are what I would call cheap.

No, Raymond, I was actually expecting the prices to shoot up above where the 4 most recent one closed, to maintain status quo. Maybe there won't be status quo!

Yeah the additional 16 sim dump tonight and the potential for more of them this week means there won't be enough bold barons to bid them all up. We will see prices drop to a base of L$8 a sqm. over the next few days. Maybe lower. Unless...Many of tonight's winners are names I've never seen at a land sale. Could it be these folks are buying sims for their personal use? If so, maybe the impact to overall prices will be less than it would be if all the sims were bought by brokers looking to flip quickly. Tonight's closing bids: http://secondlife.com/auctions/closed.phpCongrats on your win, Crystalle.

Dunno about your feeling but I think these sims were all pretty expensive. Especially compared to the volatility in the market right now. I guess the cheapest ones were about L$8.4/sqm. I noticed that very few established names bid on a sim, let alone won one. Certainly I wasn't interested at all in those prices. Although it's been like that consistently for a week or more now.
The second great land dump of '07 has started and lots of plots are piling up around L$9.2/sqm but I think as the day progresses people will continue to undercut each other as they have been all weekend.
Normally I would expect prices to drop as people desperately try to get rid of their sims or get cash to pay for them and then bounce up a day or two afterwards. But prices were gradually sliding downwards when LL were releasing 8 per day. If they continue releasing 16 per day I think we'll see a more rapid but controlled slide over the next week or so. But in this wacky market who knows what will happen!

I suspect some serious competition is going to hit the market real soon so linden is trying to lock their userbase into property, hmm if they dropped the tier prices it would be an option to get more prims for the average users.

IMHO, LL has shown no indication that they are worried about the competition. They will only raise tier prices, not drop them. I am locked into land, but if there was a better performing grid with better customer server elsewhere, I would sell in an instant.

I finally cashed out of my land holdings. I guess I am a baby baron now LOL. On the other hand, I will never pass up an opportunity to make money. If I can buy and resell at a profit, then I would be a fool not to take advantage of that. I am guessing 7.0 per sqm in a few days but back to 9 to 10 persqm in a week. Capitalism is a blast!!!!

From: Lincoln Lupino Capitalism is a blast!!!! Not for the 95% of the playerbase who are here to have fun, but suffer the effects of the greedy people who seem unable to grasp the concept that community and fun is more important than profit. I still wish Linden Lab would recognise it and stop promoting "make money in Second Life" because there is proof all around for anyone to see that it's damaging. Broccoli

Broccoli Do you think they are mutually exclusive? I hear what you are saying: I wish there were no 16m spam farmers or casinos. But it's like real life, love it or hate it. Maybe you should take your fun-loving friends to a private estate. The capitalism is still there, but it's less visible. And less laggy.

LOL....... I need to find some new Sexy photos.... You have to admit they are tasteful though....no nudity I actually enjoy making money...... if I didn't then I would get a gun and hang out in the combat sims. Selling land is just one way I do it. I build custom furniture and sell out of my shop. I also have a shop that sells cowboy hats I make. I also spend time hanging out at some of the clubs, riding the SLRR , placing sports bets and designing bizarre flying machines LOL. Why can't making money be part of the experience? I am thinking about building some malls to rent vendor space as well. Heck, if I could figure out how to script or make clothes, I would do that as well. Seriously if $20US for a piece of land is difficult for someone, then maybe they need to be focusing their resources on more important things than online games. I am not trying to be crass, I just think online gaming is a luxury. After spending a lot of money for a decent computer and graphics card, a broadband connection etc. you already have quite a bit invested in your hobby. It sure better be "extra money" rather than the baby's milk money. I was unemployed a few years ago and you bet I dropped all my online game subscriptions. What I love about SL is that it really is Libertarianism gone wild. Everytime I pop into a sim to check out a piece of land, I see something that is just plain cool but is totally whacky. I tp'ed in to look at this waterfront parcel the other day and was totally distracted by this Spanish Galleon somebody had built...... how cool is that???

My hopes are that most people in this game think the way you do. I am one of them and I believe we play a very important role in SL growth. Your example of price of equipment vs. cost to play SL is right on target.
