I don't use Windlight, so didn't think its bugs would affect me. However, a friend of mine today who does use it told me that it wasn't really appropriate to be walking round with my cock hanging out. I had to agree - except that I certainly wasn't doing that, and had it hidden. OK, I know when it's hidden you *can* still see the transparent outline highlighted in red by pressing CTRL-ALT-T, but to all intents and purposes it is invisible. But no - my friend sent me a screenshot, and there it was in all its glory, hanging out in a public area. It wasn't visible close up, but was if you looked from a distance. I asked on the support group for the supplier of my cock - xcite - and lots of users immediately responded saying they had the same problem with people using the latest version of Windlight. It apparently doesn't deal with transparencies very well. Makes a bit of a mockery of having PG areas, really!

/me is glad I have a crappy laptop and can't run Windlight!
There is just too much to look at already while exploring, without adding that into the mix!

not just genitals
01-27-2008 17:53
it actually shows many objects that should be invisible, including swords in hand, collars, walls, anything thing that can be hidden and revealed. its annoying to not be able to see someone correctly unless im fully zoomed on them

First Post here. Hi! *waves*
Believe you are referring to "GlowNads". And the creator you contacted would be considered a "Gland Baron". ^^;
I have also noticed this alpha problem. Seems hidden poseballs show from a distance, and hide up close.
/me thinks they are related.

This is actually an intentional decision by Linden Lab : From: Torley Linden [2007-12-13] [WINDLIGHT] Alpha textures becoming opaque at a distance Yes, it’s intentional that alpha (32-bit, see-through) textures become opaque (solid) at a distance — this was done as a speed booster, since layered alpha textures decrease performance. At the same time, I know how ugly it looks in some situations, and how it impairs other things — for example, if want to take a picture of an apartment building and the contents of its floors, but when I zoom out, the glass windows (alpha textures) go opaque, blocking my view. I wonder if it’d be a good idea to map this to Objects Mesh Detail… or provide an option in Debug Settings. Next steps: collate Issue Tracker stuff related to this like VWR-3101, forward to our Developers on Team WindLight for a better solution…
Which is the most asinine decision ever, in my opinion. Linden Lab seems to be so concerned lately over the image of Second Life being a place where RL businesses have to be worried about whether a "meeting" is going to be interrupted by flying penises, yet they intentionally made everyone's naughty bits visible. Go figure.

I believe this is the complementary issue to the "system skirts disappearing" issue, only this time it's fun for the ladies....

So does this mean Windlight users might be filing ARs on users of the standard viewer in PG sims who are unknowingly showing off their goods?

anyone have a JIRA issue we can comment on? I think that this is really counter to LL's apparrent intent to merge the Teen Grid into th main grid.

From: Winter Ventura anyone have a JIRA issue we can comment on? Take your pick, there are at least 20 Here's one that appears to consolidate them: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-4337

Hi Alisha, welcome to the forums!
Why on earth are people walking around with genitals attached when they know perfectly well that anyone with highlight transpart on can see all their business? That's just a little creepy.

I like to post a big Yay! for the new Windlight version---which finally works on my system--after weeks of being unable to log in with Windlight.
Looks great. Big improvement in Avatar face and body appearance.

Exactly! I would think that the easiest way to fix this problem would be to remove the item in question when you aren't using it. I mean, doesn't take that long to open a folder and attach it, does it? Just saying.

Go figure. This was discussed a bit in Torley's office hours this last Friday - the afternoon one, not the morning one that ended up about twist endings and such. The rationale was to cut lag by stopping render of alpha textures past a certain visual threshold. However, it is seemingly making things worse rather than better. Mari

I've been using the Windlight client almost exclusively for the last 4 months, and I've never noticed this effect. Any idea if tweaking the graphics preferences can make this effect better or worse?

Does the alpha layer contain any meta data on how much alpha there is? Surely they could make it so prims >50% transparent get rendered as invisible, and <50% transparent as opaque? That would seem to solve the problem.

Either this performance feature was introduced as a 'let's run with it, see how they respond, take the responses and try making the -real- implementation', or otherwise it smells of real desperation from the side of the renderer developers to gain performance...
If these kind of optimizations are the only way to improve performance on the current viewer, I'm afraid it's time to go back to the drawing boards, guys. Something is severely wrong at the design level. And any running through the code building in optimizations like these on a code level won't get you there. As this isn't a render issue....
GFX hardware has been highly optimized since 2001 (when the original viewer renderer concept was designed). They expect scenery info, preloaded textures, shaderdata etc. and lots of it. Stuff the current SL viewer simple can't provide... The 'streaming' concept of SL will eventually be second life greatest virtue and it's biggest downfall. I'm afraid it's time to go back to the design level and upgrade to 2008 specs. Built in bulk pre-loading of world data, and maybe let go of some of the 'real time' aspects of the world.

From: Nina Stepford i'll say it again: ll need to go hire on john carmack. hed sort this out right quick. It's not the renderer guys fault. They're basically asked: "Here's a running scene out of the window of a speeding car, please make a nice still-life from it. But it needs to be accurate and actual..." This needs to be fixed on a server/networking/caching level. As long as the client doesn't get complete scene info, SL will never be able to run completely smooth on current gfx cards. Even John Carmack can't build routines to optimize data that isn't there yet...
